abstract = "Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) emerging from Earth is an useful
tool for convection monitoring throughout the tropical region. OLR
fields commonly used are those of NCEP, based on HIRS-TOVS or
HIRS-ATOVS thermal infrared data from NOAA satellites and assessed
as a mean over 2.5 °-size cells. A simple expression based on
channel 4 only is applied, similarly to early methods based on
AVHRR-NOAA channel 4 data. A preliminary analysis for South
American area suggests an overall mean deviation of 10 W.m -2 and
standard deviation of 15 W.m -2 between GOES-based and NCEP OLR
estimates. Further analysis is needed, including a careful fit of
time coincidence between GOES and NOAA-16 passes over the
continent.",
