convec{\c{c}}{\~a}o sobre o Vale do Para{\'{\i}}ba do Sul. A
atividade convectiva da regi{\~a}o, n{\~a}o associada a sistemas
sin{\'o}ticos, apresenta-se somente durante o hor{\'a}rio de
17:00Z a 24:00Z nos meses de ver{\~a}o. A convec{\c{c}}{\~a}o
A {\'a}rea
de maior ocorr{\^e}ncia da convec{\c{c}}{\~a}o localiza-se
entre as cidades de Pindamonhangaba (PND) e Guaratinguet{\'a}
20:00Z a 22:59Z. As maiores ocorr{\^e}ncias nesta {\'a}rea
GUA. ABSTRACT: The installation of an S-band meteorological radar
in S{\~a}o Jos{\'e} dos Campos made it possible to observe the
characteristics of convective activity in the Para{\'{\i}}ba
Valley region. The convective activity not associated with the
synoptic scale systems in this region during the summer months is
observed mostly in the afternoon hours from 17:00Z to 24:00Z. The
convective cell arrangement in the region shows an
along-the-valley pattern, thereby indicating that the regional
topography plays an important role. An area of maximum occurrence
of convection is situated between Pindamonhangaba (PND) and
Guaratinguet{\'a} (GUA) cities preferentially during the period
from 20:00Z to 22:59Z. The maximum occurrence observed in this
area reaches 26% of the days. The radar echo maxima occur in the
range of 14,6 to 19,5 dBz, corresponding to ~2 mm/h and in the
range of 24,6 to 29,5 dBz corresponding to ~10 mm/h rainfall. A
second area of maximum convective occurrence is situated near the
Cruzeiro´s city (CRZ). The activities in these two areas are
negatively correlated (-0,71) in terms of their maximum echo
intensity. Weakening of convective activity in the CRZ region in
the period from 20:00Z to 22:00Z is quite possibly due to the
subsidence caused by strong convection in the area between PND and
