             abstract = "The first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode of the 200 hPa 
                         relative vorticity shows a wave like pattern extending 
                         northeastward from the southern South America towards equatorial 
                         South Atlantic. This mode represents the midlatitude trough, the 
                         amplified ridge and the upper level cyclonic vortices (VCANs) 
                         suggesting northward propagation of momentum and energy. For a 
                         small area within the study domain, the first mode represents the 
                         VCAN over the ocean and the second mode, the VCANs over Northeast. 
                         Correlation maps between the amplitudes of these modes and the 
                         filtered time series of the 200 hPa relative vorticity for the 
                         whole study area indicate a relationship between the South Pacific 
                         trough (120oW - 140oW) and the wave like pattern over South 
                         America. Thus, the presence of this trough might have some 
                         contribution to the VCANs formation.",
