abstract = "Interannual variability of total and zonally asymmetric
atmospheric fields is studied using Empirical Orthogonal Function
(EOF) analyses for some variables during December-February (DJF)
and June-August (JJA) periods of the years from 1979 to 1995. The
domain of the study covers all longitudes between 60oS and 60oN.
The first mode of the sea level pressure (SLP) shows a wavenumber
one pattern in the tropical and extratropical regions, which
describes features consistent with the extremes in the Southern
Oscillation (SO). The most important feature is a wave train
pattern noted for the total and asymmetric 200 hPa zonal wind and
500 hPa geopotential height. The asymmetric part of these
variables shows a wave train pattern in Atlantic/Africa region
during DJF. A wave pattern for asymmetric 200 hPa zonal wind is
observed in the South Pacific. Our results suggest that the
asymmetric part of these variables might play an important role in
the interactions of extratropical and tropical circulations.",
