regi{\~a}o Sul do Brasil.
m, chegando eventualmente a 7 m.
Wind field (10-m winds) for the period February 1997 to January
2004 obtained from the atmospheric global model AVN/NCEP and the
waves generated by the wave model NWW3, performed the data set
used in this study. An analyses were conducted focusing the
discussion on the wave regime affecting the littoral of South
Brazilian Region. The percentile 90% of the winds incident
offshore this area presented a great variability, increasing
during the winter. Noteworthy exception could be detected in 1997
and 2003, year of strong and weak El Niņo, respectively. Maximum
wind values take place during May, except in 1998 and 2002. There
is great direction variability in the superior decile, but for
winds larger than 16 m/s, the wind direction are better defined
blowing from SSW to SSE. The superior decile significant wave
height in July were nearly the double of January. In July all the
points offshore the focused region showed values above 4 m,
eventually achieving 7 m. However, values above 4 m occurred any
time of the year in places very near to the coast. The predominant
wave direction for waves higher than 4 m is between SSE and SSW.
In January, significant wave height above 4 m and peak period
above 16 s were detected in points distant from the coast,
propagating from NW and N.",
