		<abstract>The increasing anthropogenic pressure on coastal wetlands results in impacts that affect mangrove forest and their biodiversity. The Cananéia-Iguape Coastal System is considered the most conserved coastal zone in São Paulo state. Despite this, an artificial channel carries about 60 % of freshwater from the Ribeira River to the coastal system resulting in a direct influence on the flora composition and sediment dynamics in the Iguape region. This paper aims to develop mangrove forests multi-temporal analysis, using 1997 and 2010 images, in Iguape region, South coast of São Paulo state, to assist the local coastal management. Digital processing techniques, including segmentation by region growing, and Battacharya supervised classification were applied to TM/Landsat5, using SPRING GIS, version 5.1.6. The map, from 1997, indicated the total mangrove area with 827 ha and aquatic macrophytes with 226 ha. Macrophytes were absent into the coastal system, in 1997. The results from 2010 showed an increase of 125ha of mangrove areas and the occurrence of macrophytes into the coastal system, totalizing respectively 952 ha and 329 ha. Between 1997 and 2010, variations in the coastal system salinity caused changes in the areas suitable for mangrove forests habitat. However, the increase in mangrove area can mask the degradation of the site. This process is named cryptic ecological degradation. These changes must be carefully monitored to ensure biological and socioeconomic sustainability. This study can be used as a base for monitoring and management mangroves areas in the Cananéia-Iguape Coastal System.</abstract>
