abstract = "The objective of the present work was to analyze the morphology
and intensity of the winter heat islands in the urban area of
Piracicaba, SP. Winter and autumn infrared thermal data images
obtained from satellite Landsat 7 were used. The thermal images
were subsequently transformed into apparent temperature of
surface. The heat islands from each quarters were then located and
analyzed. It was verified that, in the winter, different quarters
had thermal amplitude of 8.6°C. The profile of the winter heat
islands of Piracicaba, SP is different from the observed in great
urban centers. The difference between the rural and urban
temperatures was 9.2°C. The winter heat islands are, on average,
3.3ºC more intense than the autumn heat islands. This is mainly
due to the sugar cane culture seasonality. We conclude that heat
islands are intimately related to the amount of urban and rural
                         green areas.",
