abstract = "In natural lakes inflows are usually restricted to overland flow
and small streams. Their impact is usually confined to the
littoral zone and surface waters. In contrast, in reservoirs, the
largest inflow is usually at the reservoir entrance in the
transition zone of the dammed river, and it can have a far larger
impact in the reservoir hydrodynamics. The river dynamic within
the reservoir was studied by integrating remote sensing data
collected concurrently to field campaigns and laboratory
experiments. The results from these different kinds of data and
laboratory experiment corroborated the hypothesis that depending
upon the density difference between the inflow and reservoir, the
river can enter the epilimnion, metalimnion, or hypolimnion. Also,
it was possible to set seasonal variation in the position of the
plunge point. The determination of the plunge point is important
because particle-laden underflows can influence bottom morphology
by depositing, eroding, and dispersing large quantities of
sediment particles.",
