%X This work based on supervised classification techniques using Landsat TM data generated a land use map (forest, pasture, urban, and reforestation) for the municipality of Santo Antônio do Pinhal. Based on state of the art Geographic Information System (GIS) functions recently developed for the software package SPRING, a map of "Permanent Preservation Areas" (APPs) around springs, along rivers, inclination higher than 45 degrees, altitude above 1800m, and top of hills was generated based on the drainage network and contour lines from the 1:50,000 scale topographic maps following the 1965 Federal Forest Law and subsequent Decrees. Based on the maps of APPs and land use, it was investigated the adequacy of the land use for the entire municipality area. A total of 6,129 ha (45% of the municipality) in APPs were found. From those only 3,101 ha or 51% are occupied by forest. However, 61% of top of hills are covered by forest. Only 27 ha is APP of >45 degrees of inclination and most of it is covered by forest. Results will contribute to the planning of tourism exploration of this municipality.
