%X This work presents the characterization of coffee land in São Sebastião do Paraíso, an important coffee producing region of the south of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. The project, funded by CBP&D/Café is being carried out by the Geoprocessing Laboratory of EPAMIG/CTSM. The study area was selected after a sound field work, based on parameters of the crop and surrounding environment. The geographic information system SPRING and TM/Landsat 7 images were used to build up a digital database for the area. GIS and remote sensing techniques were used to produce thematic maps, including land use, slopes classes and soils. Based on the thematic maps produced and on parameters of the crop colllected in the field, it was possible to assess the relationships between environment and coffee production in the selected area. The methodology used in the work proved to be efficient in the characterization of agricultural ecosystems.
