abstract = "The central Amazon floodplain is composed of an extensive mosaic
of wetlands including lakes and seasonally flooded grasslands and
forests. These habitats are highly productive, contain a diverse
biota and sustain a thriving regional fishery. The effective
management of natural resources and accurate estimation of trace
gas emissions in these regions have been limited by the lack of
accurate wetland distribution maps. The extensive areas involved,
the remote nature of the region and the seasonal variability of
many wetland habitats have thwarted the use of traditional mapping
procedures. We tested this approach in a training area within the
central floodplain near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. We used a
combination of images JERS-1 L-Band SAR, Landsat-5 and digital
video images to classify and map these habitats six distinct
classes of land cover were identified: terra firme, open white
water, open black water, flooded high forest, flooded low forest,
herbaceous macrophyte beds and deforested areas.",
