abstract = "A knowledge based vision system, under development, to help
structural geologists in the extraction of lineations and
lineaments from remote sensing images is described. The proposed
approach departs from traditional image processing techniques in
the sense that it takes into account the integration of many
factors (e.g., sensor type, position of the observer, shadowing,
knowledge about dominant structures)that may have influence over
the inference of relief convexity, the detection of linear
features and the type of feature. This integration is accomplished
by means of declarative and procedural knowledge which allow: the
reinforcement of image processing algorithm parameters, the choice
of the region to be focused on an image, and both the generation
and confirmation of hypotheses about the geologic significance of
an extracted linear element. The system is not intended to fully
automating the extraction task; interpretive and extraction data
should be entered by an user at any point during the analysis
process.",
