abstract = "The algal mats and bioherms on the NE Brazilian Continental Shelf
have been considered as exploitable deposits by local scientists
and industries since 1980, and demand for quantification of the
economic potential of these resources has been increasing. The
same algal mats also support a rich lobster fishery, which is the
most important export item in northern NE Brazil. The same area is
on top of oil-producing sedimentary basins exploited by Petrobras.
It will be suggested that TM-Landsat imagery of the seafloor,
capable of mapping features to the depth of 40 min NE-Brazilian
shelf, can be used to support studies in lobster ecosystem
dynamics. The potential detection of variability of biomass per
unit area of the algal fields is being pursued by the development
of a hidrospheric correction algorithm for the Landsat images. The
experimental use of TM images as a tool for policy development and
enforcement in an extensive oceanic area featuring competition of
conflicting economic interest will be briefly described.",
