abstract = "The National Organization System of Environmental Data for the
Energy Sector (SONDA) is a project coordinated by the Brazilian
Center of Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC/INPE - MCT).
This project was created aiming to improve the environmental
database, required for the assessment of renewable resources and
for the exploration of solar and aeolic energy resources in the
Brazilian territory. The SONDA project is composed by a network of
stations equipped with sensors for measurement of solar radiation,
wind and meteorological data. A SONDA station installed at
S{\~a}o Martinho da Serra - RS (south Brazil) has its equipments
installed with the ultraviolet radiation and ozone meters of the
Atmospheric Ozone Monitoring Program (PMOA - UFSM/INPE), on a
platform located in the Southern Space Observatory (OES/CRSPE/INPE
- MCT; Lat.: 29,44šS, Lon.: 53,82šO). This study comprises the
fitting of simple linear models to be used for the solar UV-B
radiation estimation, based on data of global solar radiation,
photosynthetically activate radiation (PAR) and measurements of
total atmospheric ozone column accomplished by the TOMS satellite
(Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer). Ultraviolet radiation causes
several biological damages, including skin cancer and ocular
problems. The models were fitthed by the multiple linear
regression method.",
