abstract = "The phytoplankton is the basis of the marine food chain and
contains the pigment chlorophyll which is used for photosynthesis.
During this process, the sunlight is used as an energy source to
fuse water molecules and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates. The
pigment chlorophyll absorbs the blue and green wavelengths of
sunlight, whereas water scatters them. A simple satellite
measurement of the blue-green light ratio leaving the ocean is a
way to quantify the chlorophyll concentration, and the
phytoplankton abundance in the study area. Ocean color remote
sensing is a powerful method to complement in situ studies. This
scientific work analyses the phytoplankton biomass variability
based on environmental variables in Ubatuba, a coastal zone of the
state of Sao Paulo and compare it with MODIS/AQUA satellite
estimates. The in situ time-series is a Brazilian contribution of
the Oceanographic Institute of the University of Sao Paulo and the
National Institute of Space Research to the Antares net of
observations. This work consider the samples collected from
December 2004 to January 2006. The in situ chlorophyll and sea
surface temperature data were compared to the satellite estimates,
showing a significant statistical correlation. Meteorological and
climate variables were also analyzed during the same period. A
multiple regression analysis showed linear relation between the
water column integrated chlorophyll and the euphotic depth, sea
surface temperature and sea surface chlorophyll concentration.",
