abstract = "The Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis
(LSA-SAF) is currently deriving, on an operational basis, maps of
land-surface emissivity (LSE) based on information provided by the
Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on-board
METEOSAT-8. Delivered information includes a quality control (QC)
label based on validation results. Validation activities should
preferably be performed by comparing satellite-derived data with
ground reference measurements e.g. obtained during field
campaigns. However, validation of the LSA-SAF LSE product by means
of comparisons between data retrieved from satellite and from
in-situ point measurements has proven to be especially
challenging. The major problem relates with the scale mismatch
between ground point measurements (3 to 50 cm) and the SEVIRI
resolution (about 5 km). We present a different validation scheme
that relies on the 5-km MODIS LST/LSE product to assess the
overall consistency of the LSE maps from the LSA-SAF.",
