In this work, the frequencies of dry and rainy events, in the period between 1925 and 2007, are analyzed in the scales of 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) in different Amazon locations that have distinct climatic characteristics: Manaus, Belém and Iauaretê. The long term trends for the SPI16 are also presented, once they are adequate for analyzing the variability between the dry and rainy seasons. A higher frequency of extreme and very extreme rainy events was observed when compared to the dry events, in all three locations and all time scales. This characteristic was enhanced for Iauaretê, place that had the largest annual total. Significant long term trends were not found for the SPI16 and only Iauaretê shows long sequences of SPI16 varying above and below the normal.
