abstract = "The satellite estimates of rainfall in regions with low density of
observations has been widely used in many studies to validate
numerical models, thus, it is very important to know the
performance of these products derived from satellites. In this
study, was evaluated the performance of two TRMM products (3B42V6
and 3B42RT) over South America using several sources of observed
data. The study period was seven years (December 2002 December
2009). The results showed that both versions of TRMM indicate
trends to overestimate the values of precipitation in most
regions, except on the northeast of Brazil. In this region, the
tendency to underestimate the values of precipitation is due to a
deficiency the satellite sensors in detect warm clouds that occur
in the northeastern region of Brazil. The performance of the
3B42V6 version was slightly higher than the 3B42RT version,
especially on Brazil during the spring months. The results show
that both versions indicate a great potential for use in
evaluation of numerical models as well as input data for
hydrological models and soil moisture models.",
