             abstract = "Abstract. The performance of two different versions of CPTECs 
                         vegetation Fire Risk (FR) product for the Island of Cuba in the 
                         Caribean was analyzed, comparing interpolated precipitation values 
                         from the SYNOP network with TRMM/NASA satellite radar estimates. 
                         The FR is calculated mainly from the precipitation history over 
                         the previous 120 days regarding the date of interest; relative 
                         humidity and air temperature, and fires detected, are also used in 
                         the empirical FR equations. The limited density of surface weather 
                         stations in Cuba and its neighborhood, as well as the lack of 
                         regular SYNOP data, fostered the alternative use of TRMM. The 
                         performance of the two FR methods was obtained from the occurrence 
                         of vegetation fires in FR intensity classes; the vegetation fires 
                         used were those detected in GOES-12, Terra and Acqua satellite 
                         images, analyzed in grid cells of 5km x 5km. The inclusion of TRMM 
                         estimates provided better results than in the former FR version, 
                         with a skill of 95% or better, against 85% or lower for 
                         interpolated weather station data. Following the improved results, 
                         the new TRMM method for the Cuba fire risk products was 
                         operationally adopted at CPTEC. Other analyses applying T213-GCM 
                         numeric forecasts for future Fire Risk will also be implemented.",
