amplamente distribu{\'{\i}}do na bacia Amaz{\^o}nica.

como na Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustent{\'a}vel Mamirau{\'a}
(RDSM).
No entanto, a natureza
din{\^a}mica e complexa do ecossistema aqu{\'a}tico
amaz{\^o}nico torna dif{\'{\i}}cil e adverso o seu estudo e,
an{\'a}lise espa{\c{c}}o-temporal desse ecossistema complexo e
fragmentado. Neste contexto, o objetivo desse trabalho foi
analisar a rela{\c{c}}{\~a}o entre caracter{\'{\i}}sticas
literatura pertinente. Os resultados mostraram que os lagos da
Reserva Mamirau{\'a} s{\~a}o bastante heterog{\^e}neos com
rela{\c{c}}{\~a}o a um grande n{\'u}mero de par{\^a}metros
abi{\'o}ticos avaliados (tanto morfol{\'o}gicos, quanto
sensoriamento remoto, e tamb{\'e}m heterog{\^e}neos quanto
tamb{\'e}m caracterizadas pelas suas caracter{\'{\i}}sticas
ambientais.
lago, dist{\^a}ncia deste at{\'e} o rio ou at{\'e} outro corpo
pirarucu, entretanto, ainda n{\~a}o est{\~a}o claras devido a
\textquotedblleft{young-of-the-year}\textquotedblright)
contagem anual do estoque, incrementando a densidade daqueles
lagos.
Mudan{\c{c}}as clim{\'a}ticas e
pirarucu.
sustent{\'a}vel do pirarucu. ABSTRACT: The pirarucu
(\textit{Arapaima gigas}, Schinz 1822) is the biggest scaled
freshwater fish in the world, reaching more than 3 m in length and
200 kg in weigh. It is widely distributed in the Amazon basinand
has been exploited since pre-colonial times. It has became more
scarce since the 70īs, and it is now considered commercially
extinct in some parts of the Amazon. Nowadays it is listed as
\textquotedblleft{data deficient}\textquotedblright by IUCN, but
there are several signs of fish stocks exhaustion in the Brazilian
Amazon over the past 30 years. For this reason, pirarucu fishery
is officially banned during the time of
\textquotedblleft{defeso}\textquotedblright in the northern
Brazilian states, and in the state of Amazonas it is prohibited
throughout the year, with the exception of areas of cultivation or
management, as the Mamirau{\'a} Sustainable Development Reserve.
Pirarucu fishery is a key element of ribeirinho (rural inhabitants
of Amazonian rivers margins) culture and economics, representing
up to 40\% of the total catch in Mamirau{\'a} Sustainable
Development Reserve, the main economic activity in the region. For
this reason this species has been the target of conservation
actions, and the subject of managed fishery in the study area.
Identifying the factors that affect the pirarucu density is
essential for species conservation and for sustainable fishery
management. However, the dynamic and complex nature of the Amazon
aquatic ecosystem makes it difficult to study and, consequently,
to understand the processes and interrelationships of the
structures and functions that governs it. Thus, remote sensing, by
allowing the synoptic view of large areas at various scales of
analysis and standardized records in several time scales,
integrated with other sources in geographic information systems
provides a space-time analysis of this complex and fragmented
ecosystem. In this context, the objective of this study was to
analyze the relationship between the environmental characteristics
of the floodplain lakes and pirarucu density found in theses lakes
at Mamirau{\'a} Sustainable Development Reserve between 1999 and
2009. Is was possible through the analysis and integration of data
derived from remote sensing images (optical and synthetic aperture
radar), direct sensors, field samples and information from the
literature. The results showed that Mamirau{\'a} lakes are quite
heterogeneous in respect to a large number of abiotic parameters
(morphological, limnological and vegetation types) that could be
detected by remote sensing, as well as the pirarucu density, which
is not evenly distributed in space. The studied lakes were grouped
into classes of density, which were also characterized by their
environmental characteristics. The data showed that pirarucu
density for each lake class is influenced differently by
environmental variables in each year (such as lake area, distance
to the river or to another water body, the proportion of
\textquotedblleft{restingas}\textquotedblright and
\textquotedblleft{chavascal}\textquotedblright in its banks, and
especially to the macrophyte coverage). However, the nature of
this relationship is still unclear due to the large variance of
the system over the years. Nevertheless, it was suggested that
macrophyte coverage during the flood period will influence the
number of pirarucu in the following year, mainly on juvenile
pirarucu. Increased macrophyte cover might increases the
probability of survival of the young-of- the-year, providing
protection and an excellent food source during their first months
of life. Thus, 1.5 years after these events, the juvenile
pirarucus (or bodecos), who benefited from those environments,
will be included in the annual stock estimative, thus increasing
the lake density. Macrophytes represent key-environments for the
protection and conservation, not only for pirarucus, but for most
fish species of the Amazon floodplain, increasing their biological
recruitment. Climate change and disorders related to large-scale
fishery that may affect the extent of macrophyte cover in the
Amazon floodplain lakes may pose an immediate threat to the
conservation and fishery of pirarucus. However, macrophyte mapping
through remote sensing data can be an essential tool in
establishing management plans for sustainable pirarucu fishery.",
