abstract = "This study evaluates the performace of a new data assimilation
system using the 4D-Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter
(4D-LETKF) with the Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM)
of the Center for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC).
This new data assimilation system has been assessed using data
from the Balance Regional Atmospheric Carbon in the Amazon/Large
Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (BARCA/LBA)
field experiment (June 2008). Only conventional surface and upper
air data have been assimilated by 4D-LETKF. The results were
compared with the operational data assimilation system, Global
Physical-space Statistical Analysis System (GPSAS). Observational
data collected during the BARCA/LBA field experiment over the
Amazon region were used to verify the analysis and forecasts
generated by the two assimilation systems. The analysis and
forecasts 4D-LETKF/AGCM-CPTEC shows better results than GPSAS for
some variables. The larger impacts were in the lower levels mainly
in the zonal and meridional wind field. In the high and medium
levels the analysis and forecasts 4D-LETKF/AGCM-CPTEC shows
results similar to GPSAS. However, for the period studied, the
temperature field was best represented by GPSAS. In general,
results 4D-LETKF/AGCM-CPTEC verified from observational data of
the the BARCA/LBA field experiments proved very satisfactory. The
next stage of this work is the direct assimilation of radiances by
4D-LETKF, which should help reduce the error analysis and
reproduce results closer to observations.",
