abstract = "RESUMO: O objetivo principal desse estudo {\'e} investigar o
(CFSR), desenvolvido pelo National Centers for Environmental
850 hPa e 700 hPa. O c{\'a}lculo da frequ{\^e}ncia anual das
frentes frias revelou algumas caracter{\'{\i}}sticas marcantes
Centro-Sul do Brasil.
interior do continente).
ABSTRACT: The main
objective of this study is to investigate the effect of orography
on the frequency and displacement of frontal systems across South
America. For this, were used the data of the Climate Forecast
System Reanalysis (CFSR), developed by the National Centers for
Environmental Prediction (NCEP) with a horizontal resolution of
0.5º, available every 6 hours in the period 1979-2010. Knowing
that after the passage of a cold front in a particular locality
there is an increase in surface pressure, a drop in temperature
and turning the wind, which becomes southerly direction, was
formulated a criterion for calculating the frequency of frontal
systems at each grid point at the levels 925 hPa, 850 hPa e 700
hPa. The calculation of the annual frequency of cold fronts
revealed some important features of the movement of these systems:
a) a maximum frequency frontal in higher latitudes in all seasons
of the year; b) a maximum frequency frontal secondary near the
Andes and in the region coastline of Brazil, especially in the
months of winter and spring; c) a minimum frequency of fronts in
regions with higher terrain on sector South-Central Brazil. This
minimum frequency of cold fronts indicates that the terrain can be
one factor important for the change in the pattern and
displacement of the front in the subtropical latitudes of South
America. In order to investigate the events of cold fronts that
moved through these regions of Sierra, were realized average
compositions of atmospheric fields from two distinct groups of
fronts (fronts that passed through the point of latitude 25°S and
longitude 48°W moving along the coast east of the South America,
and fronts that passed through the point of latitude 23°S and
longitude 62.5°W, moving through the interior of the continent).
This analysis showed that the orography plays an important role in
the displacement of these synoptic systems across South America.",
