abstract = "The polar cap potential is an important parameter available to
describe the level of magnetospheric activity. It is a measure of
the intensity of the magnetospheric convection. The convection
process in the magnetosphere is not steady even under constant
solar wind conditions. Bursty and unsteady processes in the
magnetopause and in the magnetotail disturb the steady state of
the magnetosphere and produce variability of the polar cap
potential. In this work a three dimensional global
magnetohydrodynamic simulation was analyzed in order to study
transient magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause and in
the geomagnetic tai1. The Block-Adaptive-
Tree-Solarwind-Roe-Upwind-Scheme (BATS-R-US) code was used.
Transient reconnection events associated with flux transfer events
at the dayside magnetopause and instabilities at the magnetotail
neutral sheet current were identified. Finally the influence of
these events on the variations of the polar cap potential has been
analyzed. RESUMO: O potencial da calota polar {\'e} um
par{\^a}metro importante dispon{\'{\i}}vel para descrever o
n{\'{\i}}vel de atividade da magnetosfera. {\'E} uma medida da
intensidade da convec{\c{c}}{\~a}o magnetosf{\'e}rica. O
processo de convec{\c{c}}{\~a}o na magnetosfera n{\~a}o {\'e}
estacion{\'a}rio, mesmo sob condi{\c{c}}{\~o}es constantes do
vento solar. Processos inst{\'a}veis e transientes na
magnetopausa e na cauda magn{\'e}tica perturbam o estado de
equil{\'{\i}}brio da magnetosfera e produzem variabilidade do
potencial da calota polar. Neste trabalho, foi analisada uma
simula{\c{c}}{\~a}o magnetohidrodin{\^a}mica global
tridimensional, a fim de estudar a reconex{\~a}o magn{\'e}tica
transiente na magnetopausa diurna e na cauda geomagn{\'e}tica. O
c{\'o}digo Block-Adaptive- Tree-Solarwind-Roe-Upwind-Scheme
(BATS-R-US) foi usado.
