use practices have frequently been applied to rainforests located
in the Amazon region, arising from predatory logging and the
indiscriminate use of fi re, both associated with high rates of
deforestation. The forest management aims to reduce these impacts
with the lowest damage. In order to quantify such eff ects it
remote sensing data such as the Normalized Diff erence Vegetation
Index (NDVI), those generated from the Linear Spectral Mixture
Model (LSMM) and canopy openness estimated by hemispherical
photographs. These data have been interpreted and analyzed to
evaluate the canopy opening in a logging area located in the
Forest Management Unit I (FMU I) - Glebas Set Mamuru-Arapiuns
(PA). Results showed that it is possible to apply a monitoring
process of land cover. The LSMM, especially image-soil fraction,
showed strong relationship with the data obtained in the fi eld
through hemispheric photos. It can be used as an index to monitor
the logging in the Amazon forests, making more accessible the
monitoring of forest areas by government and non-governmental or
private entities, giving to the local population the opportunity
and incentive to forest conservation.",
