abstract = "O objetivo principal do trabalho foi estudar a rela{\c{c}}{\~a}o
rel{\^a}mpagos. Os dados foram coletados durante quatro campanhas
de coleta de dados realizadas no ver{\~a}o de 2011/2012, de
2012/2013 e 2013/2014, no Brasil e no ver{\~a}o de 2017 nos
Estados Unidos (EUA).
an{\'a}lise.
compar{\'a}vel entre v{\'{\i}}deos.
O outro
casos estudados.
A {\'u}ltima parte deste
n{\~a}o {\'e} poss{\'{\i}}vel estimar a intensidade da
instrumento s{\'o} consegue registrar a radia{\c{c}}{\~a}o
poss{\'{\i}}vel identificar qual parte do rel{\^a}mpago {\'e}
vista pelo GLM. ABSTRACT: The main goal of the work was to study
the relationship between the return stroke luminosity of natural
cloud-to-ground lightning flashes, recorded by high-speed camera,
and the peak current of these return stroke measured by local
lightning location system. Data were collected during four data
collection campaigns that were conducted during the summer of
2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2013/2014, in Brazil and summer of 2017
in the United States (USA). Over all 1122 lightning flashes were
analyzed, following some selection criteria that consider the
visibility of the return stroke channel, cases in which it was
possible to see the presence of rain, or that were saturated, were
excluded from the analysis. In addition, we selected for this work
only the cases that had at least five return strokes detected by
at least one of the local lightning location system, As result, 66
lightning flashes were chosen to be analyzed in this work. In the
first part of the analysis the data, were analyzed case by case
because the relative brightness, extracted from the cameras, was
not a comparable magnitude between videos. In addition the cases
were separated into two groups. The first one was the data group
collected during the summer 2011/2012, during which there were two
temporary installed lightning location system in the region. Due
to the CHUVA project. The results of the 3 lightning location
system, BrasilDAT, LINET and TSL200 were compared to each other.
The second one was the data group of the summer 2012/2013 and
2013/2014 in Brazil and summer of 2017 in the USA. The lightning
location system BrazilDAT was used for data from Brazil and ENLTN
for US data. Both systems use sensors from the company
EarthNetworks. Two methods of extracting the luminosity of the
return stroke channel were applied to the data. The fixed area
method considered the same window size, in pixels (30x15), for all
cases, regardless of the size or distance of the channel. The
other method applied the photogrammetry in each case to find the
ratio pixel per meter. Relative luminosity was compared with the
peak current, and linear adjustments provided the relationship
between the two magnitudes. In the second part of the analysis,
the linear adjustments of each analyzed cloud-to-ground lightning
flashes were used to estimate the peak current. By transforming
relative luminosity into peak currents, it is possible to compare
all the cases studied. The square value of the linear correlation
coefficient between the peak current estimated by the luminosity
extracted by the fixed area method (30x15) and the peak current
measured by the lightning location systems 0.77 and for the peak
current estimated by the luminosity extracted by the
photogrammetry method was 0.73. These results show that in
general, there is a good correlation between the luminosity
extracted from the images of the cameras for the two methods and
this result xiv was similar to the result obtained by other
authors where the analyzes were carried out from direct measures
of current in lightning induced by rockets . The last part of this
work was to use the data from cloud-ground lightning, registered
during the summer of 2017 in USA, to analyze what is seen by the
geostationary imager GLM onboard the GOES-16 satellite, looking
for verify if there is some correlation between the luminosity
(energy), seen at the top of the clouds by the GLM, and the peak
current of the discharges for each return stroke recorded by the
high-speed camera. The results presented in this work show that it
is possible to estimate the peak current of the natural discharges
through the luminosity extracted from the images of the high speed
cameras and that there is a good correlation between the
luminosity of the return stroke extracted from the images of high
speed cameras , and the peak current measured by lightning
location system for cases with good visibility conditions. The
results of the comparison of the cloud-ground lightning, recorded
by the high-speed cameras with the data of the optical sensor GLM,
showed that some return strokes were recorded simultaneously by
the two instruments, but it is not possible to estimate the
current intensity of the return strokes of the lightning, since
this instrument can only register the light radiation emitted at
the top of the clouds. Only with the data used in the analysis od
this work could not identify which part of the lightning is seen
by GLM.",
