ABSTRACT: Between January 2014 and February 2015, when the
southeast region of Brazil experienced one of the worst droughts
in its history, inducing a significant increase in the forest
fires events in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro. In this
context, the aim of this study is to apply the W index to map and
quantify the location and extent of burned areas on three
Conservation Units, including Environmental Protected Area (APA)
of Petr{\'o}polis, Serra dos {\'O}rg{\~a}os National Park
(PARNASO) and Araras Biological Reserve (REBIO) using reflectance
data in Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) bands 5 (0.88
                         \μm) and 7 (2.11 \μm). The proposed automatic method
uses pre and post-fire images and involves computing spatial and
temporal thresholds. The SRTM Plus Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
was used to account for the rugged terrain in the study area.
Considering the actual surface, the results have shown a total
burned area estimate of 3904 ha, where 2819 ha was within the APA,
850 ha within PARNASO and 236 ha within REBIO. The results were
corroborated by active fire detection data from INPE and official
technical reports based on in-situ verification from Chico Mendes
