tempestades geomagn{\'e}ticas nessa regi{\~a}o e,
consequentemente, os estudos sobre seus efeitos concentram-se
principalmente nessas latitudes.
sejam observados devido {\`a} presen{\c{c}}a do eletrojato

Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis (SCHA) e Spherical Elementary
subsuperf{\'{\i}}cie.
A GIC estimada
brasileiras e aurorais canadenses. Verificou-se que a GIC estimada
na regi{\~a}o equatorial apresentou menor intensidade (3,83 A) do
ABSTRACT: Geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) are one of the
effects of geomagnetic storms that can cause problems and damage
to technological systems installed on the Earth's surface. Regions
of auroral latitude are more susceptible to GIC due to the intense
geomagnetic field variations during geomagnetic storms at these
latitudes and consequently the studies on GIC effects are
concentrated mainly in these latitudes. However, the occurrence of
GIC at low latitudes, even of low intensity, may also cause
long-term damage to high-voltage transformers in transmission
lines. When studying the GIC occurrence in the equatorial region,
it is expected that more significant effects will be observed due
to the presence of the equatorial electrojet. This work aims to
estimate and compare the GIC amplitude in different regions. For
this will be used magnetometer arrays located at different
geomagnetic latitudes, interpolation methods of the geomagnetic
field to calculate the geoelectric field and, finally, estimate
GIC amplitudes in a hypothetical energy transmission system.
Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis (SCHA) and Spherical Elementary
Current System (SECS) interpolation methods, as well as
information on the undeground distribution of electrical
conductivity, are used for calculating the geoelectric field.
Finally, the Lehtinen-Pirjola method was used to estimate the GIC
at the grounding points of the transmission line. The data set is
composed of geomagnetic field measurements acquired at different
geomagnetic latitudes, information about the ground electrical
conductivity in the regions of interest and engineering
information about the power transmission lines. The geomagnetic
data were acquired by magnetometer arrays operated by the
Brazilian Space Weather Program (EMBRACE) in low geomagnetic
latitudes, by the INPE's Geomagnetism group in temporary stations
installed around the equatorial electrojet, and by the NRCan
(Canada) in stations located in the auroral electrojet region. A
previous validation of the produced computer codes has shown that
the methods are able to reproduce satisfactorily the behavior of
the calculated GICs. The results showed that in the Brazilian
equatorial region the most intense GIC (7.70 A) was derived during
the SSC of a moderate storm observed between January 31 and
February 2, 1991 (Dst = -79 nT and Kp = 6-). The estimated GIC for
another event taken place between November 26- 28, 1990 (Dst =
-135 nT and Kp = 7-) was compared to estimates for the Canadian
auroral region. It was verified that the GIC estimated in the
equatorial region presented lower intensity (3.83 A) than that of
the auroral region (11.88 A), due to the larger intensity of the
auroral geomagnetic variations and the lower crustal conductance
in the Canadian region. Estimates of equivalent ionospheric
electric current systems using the SECS and SCHA methods were
obtained only for the Brazilian equatorial region during the event
of November 1990. It was observed that the results of the SECS
method were able to show a local trend for the equivalent
ionospheric electric current density behavior, but the same was
not obtained for the SCHA method. Thus, it can be stated that the
SECS method can be more efficiently applied for geomagnetic field
interpolation in high and equatorial latitudes, and it has been
verified that equivalent currents systems are reasonably derived
for the equatorial region. Finally, it was found that the SECS
interpolation method produces an error of the same magnitude order
(~ 30%) when using dense (as in the equatorial region) or sparse
(as in the auroral region) magnetometer arrays, which demonstrates
the versatility of the method for application in different
studies.",
