topogr{\'a}ficos.
declividade do terreno. A partir do teste estat{\'{\i}}stico de
Wilcoxon, foi poss{\'{\i}}vel identificar quais IVHs
apresentaram mudan{\c{c}}as significativas nas diferentes
orienta{\c{c}}{\~a}o do terreno.
significativas, conforme indicado pelo teste estat{\'{\i}}stico
Vegetation Index (EVI), Anthocyanin Reflectance Index (ARI),
Carotenoid Reflectance Index (CRI1) e Photochemical Reflectance
e oeste (sombreadas). Volgemann Red Edge Index (VOg) e Structure
Insensitive Pigment Index (SIPI) foram os IVHs menos
sens{\'{\i}}veis aos efeitos topogr{\'a}ficos, conforme
ABSTRACT: In the last decades, remote sensing studies on
vegetation have benefited from the increased availability of
hyperspectral data. Such data allow the determination of dozens of
hyperspectral vegetation indices (HVIs), or narrowband VIs, which
can be used to obtain information on vegetation structure, plant
physiology and canopy biochemistry. However, although variations
in terrain illumination conditions can affect the determination of
these HVIs over mountains, there are no studies on their
sensitivity to topographic effects. Therefore, the objective of
this work is to study the sensitivity of 15 HVIs to topographic
effects, as a function of different terrain illumination
conditions expressed by slope, aspect and shaded relief (cosine
factor). The HVIs were calculated from a hyperspectral
Hyperion/EO-1 image obtained over dense ombrophilous forest from
the Intervales State Park, located in southeastern Brazil. The
C-correction method was applied to reduce topographic effects and
to allow comparison between corrected and non-corrected HVIs.
Topographic classes of terrain illumination were defined based on
slope and aspect crosscomparison. Using the Wilcoxon statistical
test, we detected the most sensitive HVIs to variable terrain
illumination conditions. In addition to this test, we calculated
the relative changes between HVIs corrected and non-corrected for
topographic effects as well as the magnitude of the effect size
(Cohen's r metric) over the determination of the HVIs. The results
showed that the HVIs had different sensitivity to topographic
effects, depending on the bands used in their calculation and on
the terrain slope and aspect. More specifically, it was observed
that: (a) the C-correction compensated adequately the topographic
effects on the vegetation spectral response, by reducing the
standard deviation of reflectance, in shaded and sunlit surfaces
and in all Hyperion bands. It also decreased the correlation
between the reflectance and cosine factor on a perband basis; (b)
the resultant changes in most HVIs after topographic correction
were statistically significant, as indicated by the Wilcoxon test
(5% significance level); and (c) the most sensitive HVIs to
topographic effects were the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI),
Anthocyanin Reflectance Index (ARI), Carotenoid Reflectance Index
(CRI1) and Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI), especially for
terrains with slope greater than 30o and aspect oriented to south
and west (shaded surfaces). The Volgemann Red Edge Index (VOg) and
Structure Insensitive Pigment Index (SIPI) were the less sensitive
HVIs, as indicated by the small relative changes calculated
between topographically corrected and non-corrected data, and by
the analysis of the magnitude of the effect size of the
topographic correction.",
