                         distribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o climatol{\'o}gica espa{\c{c}}o-temporal
                         aeross{\'o}is de queimadas. A an{\'a}lise da for{\c{c}}ante
                         Wm-2), indicando o resfriamento da superf{\'{\i}}cie.
                         planet{\'a}ria. Em geral, a presen{\c{c}}a de aeross{\'o}is de
                         queimadas amplifica a press{\~a}o em superf{\'{\i}}cie,
                         n{\'{\i}}veis e da Alta Subtropical do Atl{\^a}ntico Sul. A
                         resposta din{\^a}mica {\`a} for{\c{c}}ante radiativa dos
                         aeross{\'o}is de queimadas influenciaram a
contribu{\'{\i}}ram para aumentar a destreza do sistema GEOS-
As {\'a}reas

clim{\'a}ticas sazonais. ABSTRACT: The importance of biomass
burning (BB) aerosols in the radiation balance and microphysical
properties of clouds is relatively well understood by the
scientific community. Several studies have shown the importance of
the inclusion of this forcing in climate predictions. However, for
the seasonal scale, there are still many knowledge gaps about if
the impact of the inclusion of BB aerosols on the quality of the
seasonal prediction by in a coupled ocean-atmosphere-surface
system. This PhD thesis proposed to evaluates the impact of
biomass burning aerosols on the local radiative forcing, on
surface flows and on the average behavior of the main
meteorological variables, as well as the gain in skill by
including the BB aerosol in a seasonal climate prediction system
and how the method for including these contribute to increase this
gain. The methodology uses Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS)
Sub-seasonal to Seasonal prediction (S2S) system, GEOS-S2S-2, with
prognostic that impact the radiative and microphysical cloud
processes in the atmosphere. Three numerical experiments are
conducted, taking into consideration how the BB emissions are
prescribed: no BB emissions, daily estimation emissions, and
monthly climatological emissions. Each hindcast consisted of
four-members running from June to November of each year between
2000 and 2015. The results showed that the GEOS-S2S-2 system can
reproduce the spatial and temporal climatological distribution of
the BB aerosols aerosol optical depth compared to the reference
data. The cloud cover changed in all levels of the troposphere,
due to the presence of BB aerosols. However, these changes were
greater in middle and high levels. On average, the cloud fraction
cover was increased in the region with highest optical depth and
reduced over the southern portion of the BB aerosol source. The
analysis of the Aerosol Direct Forcing (ADF) showed a reduction in
the balance of shortwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere
(-4.75 Wm textsupscript -2) and at surface (-16.34 Wm
textsupscript -2 ). In the atmosphere, the ADF was positive (11.58
Wm textsupscript -2), indicating the heating of the atmosphere.
The inclusion of BB aerosols in the GEOS-S2S-2 system contributed
to reduce the near-surface temperatures and increase temperatures
int the upper levels over the BB region, thus increasing the
stability in planetary boundary layer. In general, the inclusion
of BB aerosol increases the surface pressure, weakens the
ascending branch of the Hadley circulation, and intensifies the
low-level jets and South Atlantic Subtropical High circulation.
The dynamic response to the radiative forcing of the BB aerosols
reduced precipitation in most of South America (SA). These changes
contributed to increase the GEOS-S2S-2 system ability to predict
near-surface temperature and precipitation over some SA regions.
The method of BB aerosol emissions prescription had an impact in
the skill of the model. The areas identified with useful skill
were significantly increased when emissions were provided from
daily estimates. Futher investigations of the new alternatives for
representing BB emissions are still needed to better assess the
potential of including aerosols in increase the skill of seasonal
