ABSTRACT: Teleconnection patterns, such as El Niņo-Southern
Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), affect
circulation and, consequently, the South American climate. Some
studies show that these patterns might be related to variations in
transient systems (e.g., cold fronts) frequency. The extent of
Antarctic sea ice also affects circulation throughout the Southern
Hemisphere. However, there is no study analyzing the combined
impacts of ENOS, SAM, and Antarctic sea ice on the cold fronts in
South America. The goal of this paper was to evaluate the
frequency of cold fronts in South America in the years with
anomalies of the Antarctic sea ice extent in the
Bellingshausen-Amundsen (MBA) and Weddel (MWD) seas together with
the SAM and ENOS phases. The results show a difference in the cold
front frequency between the continent and the adjacent Atlantic
Ocean. In general, for both seas analyzed, we can see maximum
front frequencies over the ocean on the La Niņa and SAM positive
analyzes, varying only the extent of sea ice. On the continent, El
Niņo and the negative phase of SAM dominates the maximum cold
front frequencies in both minimum and maximum sea ice extensions
in the MBA but combined only with the maximum sea ice extension in
the MWD. The differences between the ocean and the continent
indicate that the three factors (SAM, ENSO, and sea ice extent)
influence the trajectory of the fronts, more meridional and
continental, or more maritime.",
