ABSTRACT: Thermal models are fundamental in the satellite
conceptual design phase. The construction of those models requires
expertise and often the use of commercial software tools which may
not be readily available for many CubeSat developers, especially
universities. The CubeSat form factor allows the reuse of thermal
models more easily. Particular models may be derived from a more
generic one, by adjusting the design parameters to the specific
solution being considered. It has already been shown that
Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) can be used as surrogates for
thermal models, in the simulation of on orbit satellite
temperatures. In this work is shown that it is possible to build
an ANN to predicting with high accuracy the thermal behavior of a
generic 1U CubeSat thermal model. Standard thermal load figures,
available in the conceptual development phase are used as inputs
of the ANN. For the thermal model considered, the trained ANN can
simulate the CubeSats temperatures in different missions and
operational scenarios. A library of such surrogates would allow
developers that have not access to thermal model software tools,
with a way to estimate, even if approximately, the on-orbit
thermal behavior of their CubeSat.",
