                         de totais de precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o leve, moderada e intensa em

                         comprimentos vari{\'a}veis no per{\'{\i}}odo de 1888 a 2004. 
                         Testes de Mann-Kendall s{\~a}o usados para evidenciar as 
                         poss{\'{\i}}veis tend{\^e}ncias que, quando significativas, 
                         s{\~a}o ajustadas por regress{\~a}o linear simples. S{\~a}o 
                         constatadas tend{\^e}ncias positivas nos totais anuais em 9 
                         esta{\c{c}}{\~o}es na {\'a}rea central da RMSP, mas somente em 
                         4 delas no ver{\~a}o. Tend{\^e}ncia significativa de aumento na 
                         frequ{\^e}ncia de eventos de precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o leve no 
                         per{\'{\i}}odo anual (ver{\~a}o) s{\~a}o evidentes em 9 (8) 
                         das esta{\c{c}}{\~o}es analisadas e 4 (6), dentre essas, 
                         apresentam tend{\^e}ncia de diminui{\c{c}}{\~a}o desses 
                         eventos. Na classe de precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o moderada, 3 
                         esta{\c{c}}{\~o}es apresentam tend{\^e}ncias anuais de aumento 
                         e uma de decr{\'e}scimo. Considerado somente o per{\'{\i}}odo 
                         de ver{\~a}o, 5 apresentam tend{\^e}ncias significativas de 
                         decr{\'e}scimo e somente uma de aumento. Em rela{\c{c}}{\~a}o 
                         aos casos anuais de precipita{\c{c}}{\~o}es severas, 4 
                         esta{\c{c}}{\~o}es apresentam tend{\^e}ncias significativas de 
                         acr{\'e}scimo e uma de decr{\'e}scimo mas, no ver{\~a}o, apenas 
                         2 apresentam tend{\^e}ncia significativa de decr{\'e}scimo. 
                         ABSTRACT: Trends of the annual and summer rainfall totals of 21 
                         rain gauges located in the Metropolitan Region of S{\~a}o Paulo 
                         (MRSP) are analyzed using three rainfall classes: drizzle, 
                         moderate and intense. The rainfall data series are variable in 
                         time length within the period 1888 to 2004. Mann-Kendall tests are 
                         used to highlight the possible trends that are fitted by simple 
                         linear regression when they are statistically significant. 
                         Positive trends are found in the annual totals of 9 stations in 
                         the MRSP central area, but only 3 of them occurred in the summer 
                         period. Significant increasing (decreasing) trends in the 
                         frequency of drizzle events in the annual (summer) period are 
                         evident in 9 (8) of the gauges analyzed and, in 4 (6) of them, the 
                         drizzle frequency decreases. Regarding the moderate annual 
                         rainfall class, 3 gauges show increasing trend whereas one 
                         presents decreasing trend. However, considering only the summer 
                         season, 5 gauges show significant decreasing trend and only in one 
                         of them the trend is increasing. With respect to the severe annual 
                         rainfall events, 4 stations present significant increasing trend 
                         and only in one of them trend appears to be declining. When summer 
                         season is considered, only 2 gauges present significant decreasing 
                         trend.",
