ALI/EO-1
ResumoWe analysed spectral and textural attributes from the Advanced Land Imager (ALI)/EO-1 for land-cover mapping and inspected their correlation with biophysical parameters of primary and secondary forests from Eastern Amazon. An artificial neural network (ANN) technique selected the most relevant spectral/textural attributes, which were combined for classification of the ALI scene. From the ANN land-cover map, areas classified as primary forest (PF), initial (SS1), intermediate (SS2) and advanced (SS3) stages of secondary succession were studied. Biophysical parameters were determined from field inventory of 40 sample plots. Results showed an overall classification accuracy of 79% using reflectance and 89% using the combined data set. The combined data set included the reflectance of ALI bands 39 and the texture metrics mean (bands 34; 68) and dissimilarity (band 8). The reflectance of the near-infrared/shortwave infrared bands and their texture mean decreased from SS1 to SS3/PF. The gradient between primary and secondary forests controlled the correlations of reflectance with biophysical parameters. While the aboveground biomass, basal area, leaf area index, tree height and canopy cover increased from SS1 to SS3/PF, the reflectance decreased with the development of canopy structure and the resultant canopy shadows. The mean was the only texture metric correlated with biophysical parameters.

ResumoOur review focuses on the projections of climate change in the Brazilian semiarid region, the Caatinga, based on recent publications about global climate change and biology. We found several vulnerable points in the initial estimates, the main one being that the data were collected and analyzed without a multidisciplinary knowledge. This review discusses several studies that show the current knowledge in many semiarid regions around the world. Some of these studies argue for the increase in vegetation greenness responses even under severe and prolonged drought, based on the high resilience the Caatinga native species show under severe drought conditions over the years. Additionally, we include in this review recent data produced by our group on key ecophysiological variables under drought conditions. We also show successful examples of deforested areas recovery in the semiarid region of the Central America. It is critical that the recovery of semiarid areas is coupled with the implementation of socio-environmental policies, engaging the local population and providing subsidies for life wealth improvement. These are key aspects for a long-term recovery and conservation of the Brazilian dry tropical forest.

La Plata Basin
ResumoThe performance of seven regional climate models in simulating the radiation and heat fluxes at the surface over South America (SA) is evaluated. Sources of uncertainty and errors are identified. All simulations have been performed in the context of the CLARIS-LPB Project for the period 1990-2008 and are compared with the GEWEX-SRB, CRU, and GLDAS2 dataset and NCEP-NOAA reanalysis. Results showed that most of the models overestimate the net surface short-wave radiation over tropical SA and La Plata Basin and underestimate it over oceanic regions. Errors in the short-wave radiation are mainly associated with uncertainties in the representation of surface albedo and cloud fraction. For the net surface long-wave radiation, model biases are diverse. However, the ensemble mean showed a good agreement with the GEWEX-SRB dataset due to the compensation of individual model biases. Errors in the net surface long-wave radiation can be explained, in a large proportion, by errors in cloud fraction. For some particular models, errors in temperature also contribute to errors in the net long-wave radiation. Analysis of the annual cycle of each component of the energy budget indicates that the RCMs reproduce generally well the main characteristics of the short- and long-wave radiations in terms of timing and amplitude. However, a large spread among models over tropical SA is apparent. The annual cycle of the sensible heat flux showed a strong overestimation in comparison with the reanalysis and GLDAS2 dataset. For the latent heat flux, strong differences between the reanalysis and GLDAS2 are calculated particularly over tropical SA. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

land use change
ResumoAs land use change (LUC), including deforestation, is a patchy process, estimating the impact of LUC on carbon emissions requires spatially accurate underlying data on biomass distribution and change. The methods currently adopted to estimate the spatial variation of above- and below-ground biomass in tropical forests, in particular the Brazilian Amazon, are usually based on remote sensing analyses coupled with field datasets, which tend to be relatively scarce and often limited in their spatial distribution. There are notable differences among the resulting biomass maps found in the literature. These differences subsequently result in relatively high uncertainties in the carbon emissions calculated from land use change, and have a larger impact when biomass maps are coded into biomass classes referring to specific ranges of biomass values. In this paper we analyze the differences among recently-published biomass maps of the Amazon region, including the official information used by the Brazilian government for its communication to the United Nation Framework on Climate Change Convention of the United Nations. The estimated average pre-deforestation biomass in the four maps, for the areas of the Amazon region that had been deforested during the 19902009 period, varied from 205 ± 32 Mg ha−1 during 19901999, to 216 ± 31 Mg ha−1 during 20002009. The biomass values of the deforested areas in 2011 were between 7 and 24 % higher than for the average deforested areas during 19901999, suggesting that although there was variation in the mean value, deforestation was tending to occur in increasingly carbon-dense areas, with consequences for carbon emissions. To summarize, our key findings were: (i) the current maps of Amazonian biomass show substantial variation in both total biomass and its spatial distribution; (ii) carbon emissions estimates from deforestation are highly dependent on the spatial distribution of biomass as determined by any single biomass map, and on the deforestation process itself; (iii) future deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is likely to affect forests with higher biomass than those deforested in the past, resulting in smaller reductions in carbon dioxide emissions than expected purely from the recent reductions in deforestation rates; and (iv) the current official estimate of carbon emissions from Amazonian deforestation is probably overestimated, because the recent loss of higher-biomass forests has not been taken into account.

ResumoA 10-year study of lightning fatalities in Brazil is presented. It is the most complete study undertaken in South America. The study indicates the death rates in the country sorted by season, state, city, type of region, age, gender and circumstances. Ten years of data were collected from the Federal Civil Defense Agency, the Ministry of Health and the media press. The circumstances of lightning fatalities in Brazil were compared with other countries that have this information available. It also includes an analysis of the differences involved in lightning deaths in each region of Brazil. The results suggest that specific actions should be adopted in terms of lightning protection to minimize risks. Finally, this study provides useful information in order to identify the most important lightning safety rules for the country.

ResumoEvapotranspiration (E) in the Amazon connects forest function and regional climate via its role in pre-cipitation recycling However, the mechanisms regulating water supply to vegetation and its demand forwater remain poorly understood, especially during periods of seasonal water deficits In this study, we efficiencyaddress two main questions: First, how do mechanisms of water supply (indicated by rooting depth andgroundwater) and vegetation water demand (indicated by stomatal conductance and intrinsic water useefficiency) control evapotranspiration (E) along broad gradients of climate and vegetation from equatorialAmazonia to Cerrado, and second, how do these inferred mechanisms of supply and demand compareto those employed by a suite of ecosystem models? We used a network of eddy covariance towers inBrazil coupled with ancillary measurements to address these questions With respect to the magnitudeand seasonality of E, models have much improved in equatorial tropical forests by eliminating most dryseason water limitation, diverge in performance in transitional forests where seasonal water deficits aregreater, and mostly capture the observed seasonal depressions in E at Cerrado However, many mod-els depended universally on either deep roots or groundwater to mitigate dry season water deficits, therelative importance of which we found does not vary as a simple function of climate or vegetation In addi-tion, canopy stomatal conductance (gs) regulates dry season vegetation demand for water at all exceptthe wettest sites even as the seasonal cycle of E follows that of net radiation In contrast, some models sim-ulated no seasonality in gs, even while matching the observed seasonal cycle of E. We suggest that canopydynamics mediated by leaf phenology may play a significant role in such seasonality, a process poorlyrepresented in models Model bias in gsand E, in turn, was related to biases arising from the simulatedlight response (gross primary productivity, GPP) or the intrinsic water use efficiency of photosynthesis(iWUE). We identified deficiencies in models which would not otherwise be apparent based on a simplecomparison of simulated and observed rates of E. While some deficiencies can be remedied by parame-ter tuning, in most models they highlight the need for continued process development of belowgroundhydrology and in particular, the biological processes of root dynamics and leaf phenology, which via theircontrols on E, mediate vegetation-climate feedbacks in the tropics.

ResumoWe investigated spatial-temporal variability and long-term trends of rainfall over the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP). Due to a lack of continuous and consistent rainfall observations in the MASP, a database for the spatial analysis was created from a composite of 94 stations, with daily rainfall data for 1973-1997, plus data from the University of São Paulo's Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy (IAG/USP) station for 1933-2011, as the base of the long-term variability analysis. It is shown that the seasonal and interannual rainfall variability result from underlying local influences and remote large-scale atmospheric dynamics. These effects appear to be more complex during the austral spring and fall seasons, and seem to determine the duration of the rainy period over the MASP. The intraseasonal (30-60 d) oscillation of rainfall does not exhibit any long-term modulation; interannual rainfall variability for 1975-1990 appears modulated by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) scale (2-8 yr). Nonetheless, there exists statistical evidence that the rainfall climate over the MASP had an abrupt change at the end of the 1950s, but the global climatic change that occurred in the middle of the 1970s is not evident. The progressive increase in the frequency of rainy days and total daily rainfall throughout the period of analysis are prominent factors in the trend of annual and seasonal rainfall. Furthermore, rainfall variability over the MASP may be modulated by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and ENSO at seasonal scales, altering the normal progression of the seasonal rainfall cycle, while at interannual scales, each one of these patterns drives the rainfall variability, mainly when each pattern reaches its extreme value.

ResumoA cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning data provided by the Brazilian lightning detection network (BrasilDAT) for a ten year period (19992008), and particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and air temperature data from the environmental agency of São Paulo State (CETESB) for the same period, were examined in order to look for the influence of urban effect and weekly cycles in lightning activity over metropolitan region of São Paulo (MRSP). The results show that there is a significant weekly cycle in PM10 over the MRSP and lightning activity (CG lightning) on the area involving the MRSP, Campinas and São Jose dos Campos regions, both with reduction on the weekend. The average number of flash per storm and air temperature in three different ranges of PM10 concentrations was also examined. For the first one, there is an increase of the average number of flash per storm from low to intermediate range and a trend to decrease from intermediate to high range. However, the air temperature tends to stay the same in all ranges. These results suggest that pollution tends to saturate the intensification of storms and lightning activity in a specific level. After that, the increase of aerosols provided by pollution tends to decrease the lightning activity.

ResumoDensity maps are one of the most common and powerful lightning data applications, and they are more efficient the more detailed they are. When working with CG lightning data from lightning location systems, some aspects must be included in the analysis to overcome network performance variations. Two parameters are typically used to evaluate system performance: detection efficiency (DE) and location accuracy (LA). For the Brazilian National Integrated Lightning Detection Network, DE is typically evaluated by models, and LA is analyzed through confidence ellipses. This paper presents climatological analysis of lightning activity, including the most recent relative DE model developed in Brazil, as well as an adapted kernel smoothing method based on confidence ellipses [called Gaussian kernel based on confidence ellipses (GKBCE)] as approaches to minimize and/or include the spatial variation of the systems performance in the analysis. The maps are produced over the central-south portion of Brazil (mainly along ITAIPU power transmission lines), using 11 years of data available from the network (from January 1999 to December 2009). The model increased density by ~20% over the entire region, without making considerable changes to the spatial pattern. The GKBCE seems to work well in smoothing, obtaining better results than the standard cell count (quadrat) method, by working independently of the grid size (allowing the creation of high-resolution maps), and by including location errors in the analysis. The use of these procedures might result in more detailed maps and more suitable results when analyzing lightning data.

ResumoThis work examined observationally the Urban Heat Island (UHI) of Manaus city, Brazil. For this, data collected from two different sites, in an urban area and from a region of forest about 30 km from city, for the period of 20002008, were used. The results show that the urban environment creates a local increase in temperature and a decrease in relative humidity. The annual average observed between the urban and forest sites can reach differences of temperatures around 3 °C and relative humidity close to 1.7%. An interesting feature of the UHI of Manaus is associated with a diurnal cycle that differs from other studies for different locations in the world, with two peaks of highest intensity, one at 0800 LST and one between the 1500 and 1700 LST. It also highlighted that the urban area tends to heat first and more slowly and cool down later and faster than the forest, which explains the distinct behaviour of the diurnal cycle of the UHI. The obtained knowledge of the Manaus UHI allows the implementation of policies and methodologies that aim to improve the quality of life and comfort of large urban cities, such as those studied.
