ResumoA novel electrochemical method for the determination of rosuvastatin calcium (RC) using a composite of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide (VACNT-GO) as the electrode material is proposed. The VACNT-GO electrode was synthesized using a microwave-assisted chemical vapor deposition method followed by oxygen plasma treatment. The VACNT-GO electrode presented superhydrophilic behavior and fast charge transfer, which are very attractive for electrochemical applications. The RC molecule presented an oxidation process at +1.26 V vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 mol L-1 KCl) in phosphate buffer solution (pH 2), and this redox behavior was explored for its voltammetric determination. Using square-wave adsorptive anodic stripping voltammetry (SWAdASV) under optimized conditions, the analytical curve was linear in RC concentration range from 0.48 to 46.72 μmol L-1 with a limit of detection of 0.06 μmol L-1. The developed SWAdASV method was applied for RC quantification in commercial pharmaceutical samples, and the results are consistent with those obtained by the comparative spectrophotometric method at a confidence level of 95%. Moreover, RC was determined in human body fluid samples of urine and human serum.

ResumoContext. The protoMIRAX hard X-ray imaging telescope is a balloon-borne experiment developed as a pathfinder for the MIRAX satellite mission. The experiment consists essentially in a coded-aperture hard X-ray (30200 keV) imager with a square array (13 × 13) of 2 mm-thick planar CZT detectors with a total area of 169 cm2 . The total, fully-coded field-of-view is 21◦ × 21◦ and the angular resolution is 1◦430 . Aims. The main objective of protoMIRAX is to carry out imaging spectroscopy of selected bright sources to demonstrate the performance of a prototype of the MIRAX hard X-ray imager. In this paper we describe the protoMIRAX instrument and all the subsystems of its balloon gondola, and we show simulated results of the instrument performance. Methods. Detailed background and imaging simulations were performed for protoMIRAX balloon flights. The 3σ sensitivity for the 30200 keV range is ∼1.9 × 10−5 photons cm−2 s −1 for an integration time of 8 h at an atmospheric depth of 2.7 g cm−2 and an average zenith angle of 30◦ . We developed an attitude-control system for the balloon gondola and new data handling and ground systems that also include prototypes for the MIRAX satellite. Results. We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the camera response at balloon altitudes, showing the expected background level and the detailed sensitivity of protoMIRAX. We also present the results of imaging simulations of the Crab region. Conclusions. The results show that protoMIRAX is capable of making spectral and imaging observations of bright hard X-ray source fields. Furthermore, the balloon observations will carry out very important tests and demonstrations of MIRAX hardware and software in a near space environment.

Equatorial Ionization anomaly at different seasons
ResumoUsing dual frequency GPS receivers in the South American sector, the measurement of absolute ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) has been estimated applying the Nagoya ionospheric model for both the years of 2009 and 2001, which represent low and high solar activities, respectively. The diurnal, day-to-day, monthly, seasonal, latitudinal and longitudinal variations of TEC were studied for equatorial and low latitude regions of South America. The strength and characteristics of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) were equally analyzed. The analyses reveal the diurnal, seasonal and semidiurnal TEC variation, as well as the nighttime variability during the low and high solar activities. Wavelet power spectra analysis was employed to check the periodicities of the TEC data, F10.7 and zonal and meridional wind velocities measured by Meteor radar at ∼100 km altitude. Periods such as 27, 16, 810, 15 days were found to be dominant in the zonal and meridional wind velocity corresponding with those of TEC periodicities. Hence, besides the solar radiation, we suggest that there are contributions of tides and planetary waves in spatial and temporal TEC enhancement and variations during the geomagnetic quiet periods of both solar activities.

ResumoThis paper presents a medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbance (MSTID) occurrence detected through the OI 630.0 nm emission all-sky images, obtained by ground-based imaging systems installed at close geomagnetic conjugate locations: one at the Southern Space Observatory-SSO/CRS/INPE-MCTI, (29.4°S, 53.8°W), in Sao Martinho da Serra, RS, Brazil, and another at the Arecibo Observatory (18.3°N, 66.7°W), in Puerto Rico. The images obtained show the optical signature of MSTIDs (low intensity regions of 630.0 nm airglow emission), propagating simultaneously in both hemispheres, during geomagnetically quiet conditions (Kp<3). Observations using digital ionosonde installed at Falkland Islands (51.4°S, 57.5°W) and Ramey, Puerto Rico (18.5°N, 67.1°W) show an abrupt upward motion of the ionospheric F region plasma and the occurrence of frequency-type spread-F that could be related to the MSTIDs observed optically. Using Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver data, we also obtained the rate of the Total Electronic Content (TEC) change (ROT) for two geomagnetically conjugated sites-Santa Maria (29.7°S, 53.7°W) and Virgin Islands (17.7° N, 64.7°W). The analysis of TEC allows us to identify an irregular ionization in the F layer associated with the passage of an MSTID. The possible effects of the South America Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA) on the electrodynamic processes that control the inter-hemispheric coupling that give origin to the conjugate MSTIDs are highlighted and discussed.

High speed cameras
ResumoThis study aims to analyze how the visible parameters of cloud-to-ground discharges such as the flash multiplicity and duration, the interstroke interval, the continuing current duration and the number of ground contacts per flash vary between observations conducted on different days. Several authors have already analyzed these parameters for groups of thunderstorms in some regions. Although some authors did not find differences on those characteristics for different regions, there has not been a comprehensive amount of lightning recordings from the same thunderstorm in order to evaluate such parameters in a storm-to-storm basis. The lightning data for this work was obtained by four high-speed cameras set to operate at 2500 framesper second. They were locatedinSão JosédosCampos,Brazil, andinitsneighboring region as part of the RAMMER project (Portuguese acronym for Automated Multi-Camera Network for Monitoring and Study of Lightning Flashes). Five thunderstorm days were selected for this study, during which a total of 361 flashes were recorded. This is the first study in which four high-speed cameras observed the same thunderstorm from different locations. Because of the number of cameras and their positions, the coverage area is larger than usual single-camera studies, thereby increasing the number of flashes recorded from the same thunderstorm. These larger samples allow a more representative analysis of the lightning parameters mentioned above.

ResumoIt has been discussed in past papers if a positive leader propagates in a stepped fashion or not. Some studies state that, in some positive cloud-to-ground flashes, the electric field pulses observed just before the connection of the positive leader to ground could be a manifestation of the stepping of the leader. Some authors say, however, that it may be due to the stepping of the negative upward connecting leader during its ascension toward the downward positive leader. In this work we present a well-documented case of a positive cloud-to-ground flash that shows that the pulses observed in the electric field preceding the return stroke are due solely to the upward propagation of a negative connecting leader. This flash was recorded simultaneously by a fast electric field sensor and a high-speed camera in July 2012 in the Black Hills area of South Dakota.

Paraná Basin
three-dimensional conductivity structure
ResumoA large-scale array of long-period magnetic data and a deep-probing magnetotelluric profile were recorded in the intracratonic Paraná sedimentary basin in central eastern South America, which presents a thick and extensive sedimentary-magmatic sequence that allows its basement to be investigated only by indirect methods. Integration of the results from both methods showed that the crust beneath the basin presents several quasi-linear highly conductive channeled zones with limited lateral extent, in coincidence with some of the main tectonic structures recognized at the surface, and a moderate but pervasive lithosphere conductivity enhancement beneath its central part. Upward movement of CO2-bearing volatiles and magmas precipitating highly conducting mineral phases along discrete subvertical fault zones that served as feeder conduits for Early Cretaceous voluminous continental flood basalts was a likely process responsible for the localized conductivity enhancements. Correlation between some of the linear conductive zones and elongated magnetic anomalies and between the maximum depth occurrence of most of these conductive anomalies and the Curie depth at which crustal rocks lose their magnetism gives strong support to interconnected iron oxides (especially magnetite) and iron sulfides (such as pyrrhotite) as the main conductive sources. The moderate bulk conductivity increase in the crust and upper mantle beneath the central part of the basin is unexpected for a postulated cratonic basement and is tentatively associated with impregnation of the lithosphere by conducting minerals related either to widespread tectonic events in the Ordovician or Late Precambrian or to dispersed magmatic residues of an Early Cretaceous magma differentiation contaminating the entire lithosphere.

ResumoFollowing the recently established "Binary-driven HyperNova" (BdHN) model, we here interpret GRB 970828 in terms of the four episodes typical of such a model. The "Episode 1," up to 40 s after the trigger time t (0), with a time varying thermal emission and a total energy of E-iso,E-1st = 2.60 x 10(53) erg, is interpreted as due to the onset of an hyper-critical accretion process onto a companion neutron star, triggered by the companion star, an FeCO core undergoing a SN explosion. The "Episode 2," observed up t (0) + 90 s, is interpreted as a canonical gamma ray burst, with an energy of erg, a baryon load of B = 7x 10(-3) and a bulk Lorentz factor at transparency of G = 142.5. From this Episode 2, we infer that the GRB exploded in an environment with a large average particle density aOE (c) n > a parts per thousand 103 particles/cm(3) and dense clouds characterized by typical dimensions of (4-8) x 10(14) cm and delta n/n similar to 10. The "Episode 3" is identified from t (0) +90 s all the way up to 10(5-6) s: despite the paucity of the early X-ray data, typical in the BATSE, pre-Swift era, we find extremely significant data points in the late X-ray afterglow emission of GRB 970828, which corresponds to the ones observed in all BdHNe sources. The "Episode 4," related to the Supernova emission, does not appear to be observable in this source, due to the presence of darkening from the large density of the GRB environment, also inferred from the analysis of the Episode 2.

ResumoWe have being studying the zonal and vertical E region electric field components inferred from the Doppler shifts of type 2 echoes (gradient drift irregularities) detected with the 50 MHz backscatter coherent radar set at São Luis, Brazil (SLZ, 2.3°S, 44.2°W) during the solar cycle 24. In this report we present the dependence of the vertical and zonal components of this electric field with the solar activity, based on the solar flux F10.7. For this study we consider the geomagnetically quiet days only (Kp ≤ 3+ ). A magnetic field-aligned-integrated conductivity model was developed for proving the conductivities, using the IRI-2007, the MISIS-2000, and the IGRF-11 models as input parameters for ionosphere, neutral atmosphere, and Earth magnetic field, respectively. The ion-neutron collision frequencies of all the species are combined through the momentum transfer collision frequency equation. The mean zonal component of the electric field, which normally ranged from 0.19 to 0.35 mV/m between the 8 and 18 h (LT) in the Brazilian sector, show a small dependency with the solar activity. Whereas the mean vertical component of the electric field, which normally ranges from 4.65 to 10.12 mV/m, highlights the more pronounced dependency of the solar flux.
