ResumoThe energy sector in the Central America and Caribbean regions is primarily fossil fuel based and one of the major sources of air pollution in the region. In Cuba, energy production is responsible for 99% of SO2 emissions, 98% of NOX and 94% of CO, with emissions in 2000 of 588.59 Gg, 149.57 Gg and 536.42 Gg, respectively, according to the Cuban National Inventory - CNI. Electric power generation plants, the most important sub-sector, are highlighted as point sources of high emissions, in particular, SO2. Global inventories are shown to be inaccurate for Cuba. RETRO has non-zero data for just one cell, over the city of Havana. EDGAR has deficiencies in its geographical distribution, with no emissions over the city of Havana, and the distribution of emissions by sectors is unrealistic according to the CNI: for instance, in the case of SO2, it distributes emissions nearly equally between electricity generation and the remaining sectors, which is inaccurate. More importantly, emissions are overestimated, with the notable exception of SO2 and NMVOC. The most important reasons are the particularities of Cuba, including the extensive employ of fossil fuels with little refining and high sulfur content in energy production and industrial processes such as asphalt production, and the use of low efficiency technologies. This work presents an improved emissions inventory with CNI data and detailed emissions for all major power generation plants. The impact of this improvement was assessed through numerical air quality simulations of the transport and transformation of these emissions from a regional perspective, conducted with the CCATT-BRAMS 3D atmospheric chemical transport model, developed and maintained by INPE, Brazil. Boundary conditions were supplied by global model MOCAGE with chemistry scheme RELACS. Simulations with the new inventory were conducted with CATT-BRAMS using chemical mechanism RELACS, incorporated as part of this work, for two months (January and August) of 2008, and the differences found for the observed patterns for the dispersion of pollutants at a regional scale are discussed. The behavior of the model was evaluated through sensitivity tests.

regional modeling
ResumoThe Weather Research and Forecasting chemistry (WRF-chem) model is a community modeling system that includes many different choices for the treatment of gas phase chemistry and aerosols. The chemical and aerosol pollutants are transported and react with the environment "online" fashion with the meteorological forecast model. In other words, the interaction and transport of meteorological, chemical, and aerosol species are calculated using the same physical parameterizations with no need to interpolate in time and/or space. The modeling system may be used from global to Large Eddy simulation scales, and incorporates the direct and indirect effects of aerosols. Recently, wild fires were included into this modeling system. A numerical tool was developed to generate emission data for several types of grid projection for global and regional models. The biomass burning emission model (3BEM) uses remote sensing fire count data together with global carbon density to determine the timing, location and intensity of fire emissions and to initiate a plume rise module. In our case, the sub grid scale plume rise of vegetation fires is included by embedding a 1D cloud resolving model, with appropriate lower boundary conditions, in each column of a 3D host model. The host model provides the environmental conditions, and the plume rise is simulated explicitly. The final height of the plume is then used in the source emission field of the host model to determine the effective injection height of the material emitted during the flaming phase. We will discuss results from fully interactive weather/chemistry simulations on various scales. We chose simulations with current operational horizontal resolutions of approximately 10 km and cloud resolving simulations with much higher horizontal resolutions (2km). Results from fully interactive simulations are compared with simulations that do not include wildfires.

ResumoOver the past decades, several campaigns have been conducted in the Amazon Basin, during which the emissions from biomass burning were characterized. Other campaigns, as well as remote sensing studies, have produced clear evidence that the budget of traces gases (including CO2) and aerosols over the Basin are strongly perturbed by vegetation fires. We will briefly review these studies and present some recent measurements made during the the Balanço Atmosférico Regional de Carbono na Amazônia (BARCA) aircraft measurement program, which consisted of two aircraft campaigns during November-December 2008 (BARCA-A) and May-June 2009 (BARCA-B). The measurements covered the altitude range from the surface up to about 4500 m, and spanned across the Amazon Basin. While our results confirm the importance of biomass burning for the atmospheric composition over the Amazon Basin in general, they also highlight some complexities. One is the influence of transatlantic transport: Amazonia is downwind of massive fire regions in Africa, and depending on season and locality, these can make an important contribution to the trace gas and aerosol burden over the Amazon Basin. Another difficulty arises from the fact that representative emission ratios for CO relative to CO2 are difficult to obtain in the field, owing to the influence of biospheric exchange on the distribution of CO2 concentrations. The consequences of these and other uncertainties for a quantitative assessment of the sources of trace gases over Amazonia and for the estimation of carbon exchange with the biosphere will be discussed.

ResumoOne of the main problems in the study of the atmospheric circulation patterns over South America is associated with the lack of observational data, in particular, in the Amazonian region which dominates a large section (tropical) of that continent. The above mentioned lack of information makes the combined use of observations and modeling a powerful tool to improve the understanding of those patterns at global scale and more precisely regional scale over the study area. Several efforts have been made to mitigate the lack of information including several field experiments. Among those experiments, the LBA and most recently BARCA/LBA that occurred during June and November of 2008, should be mentioned. Both experiments are multidisciplinary in nature, involving several national and international Institutions with the common objective of better understand the biogeochemical cycle of the Amazonia. The main objective of this study was to generate a high resolution reanalysis (20 km) for the whole South America continent and adjacent oceans, using all the available data collected during the BARCA/LBA field experiment including all the conventional and satellite datasets available during that period in the data assimilation procedure. The impacts of these observations on the resulting analysis are assessed over the Amazon region. The combined use of all those observations with numerical modeling was a very important step towards the understanding of the moisture budget over this region. The comparison between the analyses that included the extra data from the BARCA/LBA experiment shows the importance of regular observations over the Amazon basin. All of the datasets used in this study are available to the community at the LBA webpage for download and for use in additional validation/evaluation studies in the future.

ResumoThe model simulation of a classical case of South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) occurred on 21 March 2004 using the Coupled Chemistry-Aerosol-Tracer Transport-Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CCATT-BRAMS) was performed. The convective parameterization scheme of Grell and Dévényi is used to represent clouds and their interaction with the large scale environment. The Grell-Dévényis method considers an ensemble of several methodologies of cloud parameterizations. The model was run 6 times with different choice of parameterizations. Five experiments used only one type of parameterization mentioned above and provide five different responses for the rainfall. The 6th experiment ran with all parameterizations, but the precipitation field was computed by an average among the members of the ensemble. The 5 simulated precipitation fields were used as the direct problem (see companion paper), and the precipitation field estimated by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite as the observed data. The inverse problem is solved as an optimization problem with regularization operator of Tikhonov of zero order. For determining the best combination of the ensemble members reproducing the TRMM measurement, the quadratic difference between simulation fields and the observed data ( , where W= {w1,..., w5} is the weight vector to be calculated) should be minimized. The objective function is optimized by the Firefly (FA) method. Each firefly represents a five dimension candidate solution, and the brightest firefly represents the best set of weights to weight the schemes of convective parameterization. Some tests were carried out with FA optimizer to set up the parameters of the algorithm. The best results were obtained with 5 fireflies and 10 iterations. The retrieved field of precipitation was in agreement with the observed field. We computed the error precipitation field obtained with simple ensemble average and the error to the retrieved precipitation: errors of the ensemble average are greater than the errors of the retrieved precipitation. We expect to employ the method introduced here to improve the simulated precipitation of the CCATT-BRAMS system.

ResumoThe goal of this work is to evaluate a prototype system of ensemble weather forecasting based on the multi-model technique. The multi-model system is based on integrating a numerical model using different parameterizations of physical processes, such as deep convection and radiation. The model used was the Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM) from the Centre for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC). The evaluation consisted of two stages: first, the calculation of statistical scores to the northern and southern Hemispheres and Tropical Region; second, the evaluation of a rainy event occurred in late November 2008 in the coastal region of the State of Santa Catarina (SC). The configuration of the Ensemble Prediction System (EPS) used as reference is configured identically to the version currently in operation in CPTEC. The results show that the multi-model was able to anticipate some characteristi.

ResumoAccording to the migration plan of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) available through the internet, all Traditional Alphanumeric Codes (TAC) will be replaced by the Table-Driven Code Form (TDCF). In the case of observed meteorological data, all traditional messages, such as FM12-SYNOP, FM13-SHIP, FM18-BUOY, FM35-TEMP, etc. will be replaced by the FM94-BUFR (Binary Universal Form for Representation meteorological data). For this migration, the worldwide meteorological services have to adapt their computational systems. There are some free and open source softwares to encode and decode FM94-BUFR which can be used. An example is the MBUFRTOOLS, a FORTRAN90 software that have being developed at the Brazilian Center for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC) since 2005. In this work, we present some practical aspects related to the decoding FM94 BUFR, which has been observed using MBUFRTOLS. These aspects include the manipulation of BUFR table versions and interfaces between BUFR decoders and generic computational applications, like data bases and data viewers. One of difficulties related to practical use of data is the diversity of BUFR temples: one BUFR template for each kind of meteorological data. In the new version of MBUFRTOOLS, a new computational tool have been included which can process most of the BUFR templates, including conventional data and data derived from satellites, like ATOVS and Cloud Tracking Winds. The results are presented in a text uniform file, where the user can control the format and the desired variables from BUFR. With this tool it is possible to have a fixed format interface between the FM94-BUFR data and generics computation applications, even if the data comes from different BUFR templates at same time.

ResumoThe Andes mountain range has an important influence on the atmospheric currents in South America. Part of the trade-wind is deflected southward by the mountain barrier and form a low level wind current that extends from Amazon region to the north of Argentina and adjacent areas. Sometimes the wind velocity in this current is so high that can characterize as a Low Level Jet (LLJ). The mean wind speed in the LLJ region is around of 9 m/s during the summer mouth, but it is not constant. There is a large diurnal variation, having a maximum at night time that can exceed 15 m/s. The LLJ is responsible for the transportation of large amounts of heat and humidity from Amazon region to severe weather systems in downstream LLJ areas. There are many proposed theories to explain the LLJ mechanism, including inertial oscillation due to frictional decoupling at night, baroclinicity produced by the inclined boundary layer over the slope terrain, large scale baroclicity, interaction with upper-level jets, etc. In this study, the South America LLJ is investigated from the point of view of eddy kinetic energy. Four terms of Eddy Kinetic Energy tendency are analysed: The Ageostrophic flux converge (AFC), the Baroclinic conversion (BRC), the Barotropic conversion (BRT) and Kinetic Energy Convergence (KEC). These terms were calculated using meteorological fields from Global NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis, which were performed with the inclusion of high-resolution data in the period from January to February of 2003, during the South American Low-Level Jet Experiment (SALLJEX). The results show that AFC has a strong diurnal variation and it is the dominant term in LLJ. The other components have significant influence too, especially in the longer time scale, from 2 to 5 days.In general the BRC and BRT modules the LLJ intensification, indicating influences from large scale systems.

ResumoThe mean atmospheric circulation over South America (SA) is characterized by typical regimes. The seasonal cycle of precipitation over tropical South America presents characteristics similar to monsoon systems, with distinct wet (October-April) and dry (May-September) seasons over many areas between 25°S and the Equator. The main goal of this study is to document the main characteristics of the hydrological cycle over the South American region, based on four atmospheric reanalysis (MERRA, ERA INTERIM, NCEP 1 and NCEP 2) and five observed precipitation data products (SALDAS, CPC, CMAP, GPCP and GLDAS). Precipitation is one critical diagnostics that is not only sensitive to the observing system and model physics, but also reflects the effects from the general atmospheric circulation. Using the aforementioned available datasets associated with tropospheric information (temperature, wind and specific humidity), the transport of moisture on the South America, especially in the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) and La Plata Basin (LPB) regions, was evaluated for the period of 1979 through 2007. Taylor diagrams show that the observational products tend to be tightly grouped and close to the CPC reference point, whereas most of reanalyses show correlation coefficients below 0,6. Only the NCEP CFS reanalysis presented high correlation coefficients when relative to the others. Furthermore, the correlation coefficients are consistently lower during the Austral Summer when compared to the Winter. In summary, the preliminary result indicate that the atmospheric reanalyses used in this study show systematic deficiencies in determining precipitation across South Americain spite of some parts of that continent present lower raingauge observations density. Between 2000 and 2007, the observed precipitation products are generally closer to SALDAS and CPC, while MERRA presents a dry bias in opposition tothe other reanalyses that show a wet bias.
