ResumoThe atmospheric transport of biomass buming emissions in the South American and African continents is being monitored annually using a numerical simulation of air mass motions; we use a tracer transport capability developed within RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling Sys- tem) coupled to an emission modelo Mass conservation equations are solved for carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate material (PM2.5). Source emissions of trace gases and particles associated with biomass buming activities in tropical forest, savanna and pasture have been parameterized and introduced into the modelo The sources are distributed spatially and temporally and assimilated daily using the biomass buming locations detected by remote sensing. Advection effects (at grid scale) and turbulent transport (at sub-grid scale) are provided by the RAMS parameterizations. A sub- grid transport parameterization associated with moist deep and shallow convection, not explicitly resolved by lhe modeldue to its low spatial resolution, has also been introduced. Sinks associated with lhe process of wet and dry removal of aerosol particles and chemical transformation of gases are parameterized and introduced in lhe mass conservation equation. An operational system has been implemented which produces daily 48-h numerical simulations (including 24-h forecasts) of CO and PM2.5, in addition to traditional meteorological fields. The good prediction skills of lhe model are demonstrated by comparisons with time series of PM2.5 measured at the surface.

ResumoLarge-scale aspects of the heat and moisture budgets of the Walker circulation (WC) are analysed for the austral summer during the period from 1970 to 2000. Since several earlier studies discuss theoretical and modelling aspects of the heat and moisture budgets of the WC, our main objective is to make an observational analysis of such budgets, including a composite of five strong El Nino-southern oscillation events covered by the period of study. For this purpose, data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis and Global Precipitation Climatology Project are used. Analysis of the moisture budget in the near-equatorial regions of the Southern Hemisphere showed that the three continents (South America, Africa and maritime continents) are characterized by high precipitation and that low precipitation occurs in the intermediate oceans. Regions of high (low) precipitation are associated with the vertically integrated moisture flux convergence (divergence). Analysis of the heat budget for the WC showed, as deduced in some theoretical studies, that the diabatic heating (cooling) is balanced by adiabatic cooling (heating) over regions with a convective (non-convective) regime. The loss of radiation to space over non-convective areas is balanced by adiabatic heating due to the sinking motion. There is heating over the continents, probably associated with the ascending motion in the WC, and cooling over the intermediate oceans, which is related to the loss of radiation in the descending branch of the WC. Analysis of the moisture balance for the entire period and a composite of El Nino periods shows that the WC is associated with precipitation variations in the near-equatorial regions of the continents. The low-level changes in the WC are associated with the moisture flux changes and have the main role in the maintenance of the rainfall anomalies during the El Nino events. ResumoThe quality of the vertical distribution measurements of humidity in the atmosphere is very important in meteorology due to the crucial role that water vapor plays in the earth's energy budget. The radiosonde is the humidity measurement device that provides the best vertical resolution. Also, radiosondes are the operational devices that are used to measure the vertical profile of atmospheric water vapor. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has carried out several intercomparison experiments at different climatic zones in order to identify the differences between the available commercial sensors. This article presents the results of an experiment that was carried out in Brazil in 2001 in which major commercial radiosonde manufacturers [e.g., Graw Radiosondes GmbH & Co., KG (Germany); MODEM (France); InterMet Systems (United States): Sippican, Inc. (United States); and Vaisala (Finland)] were involved. One of the main goals of this experiment was to evaluate the performance of the different humidity sensors in a tropical region. This evaluation was performed for different atmospheric layers and distinct periods of the day. It also considers the computation of the integrated water vapor (IWV). The results showed that the humidity measurements achieved by the different sensors were quite similar in the low troposphere (the bias median value regarding the RS80 was around 1.8%) and were quite dispersed in the superior layers (the median rms regarding the RS80 was around 14.9%).

South America
ResumoSeasonal forecasts run by the Eta Model over South America were evaluated with respect to precipitation predictability at different time scales, seasonal, monthly and weekly for one-year period runs. The model domain was configured over most of South America in 40km horizontal resolution and 38 layers. The lateral boundary conditions were taken from CPTEC GCM forecasts at T62L28. The sea surface temperature was updated daily with persisted anomaly during the integrations. The total time integration length was 4.5 months. The Eta seasonal forecasts represented reasonably well the large scale precipitation systems over South America such as the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the South Atlantic Convergence Zone. The total amounts were comparable to observations. The season total precipitation forecasts from the driver model exhibited large overestimate. In general, the largest precipitation errors were found in ASON season and the smallest in FMAM. The major error areas were located along the northern and northeastern coast and over the Andes. These areas were present in both models. The monthly precipitation totals indicated that the intra-seasonal variability, such as the monsoonal onset, was reasonably captured by the model. The equitable threat score and the bias score showed that the Eta Model forecasts had higher precipitation predictability over the Amazon Region and lower over Northeast Brazil. The evaluation of the precipitation forecast range showed that at the fourth month the forecast skill was still comparable to the first month of integration. Comparisons with the CPTEC GCM forecasts showed that the Eta improved considerably the forecasts from the driver model. Five-member ensemble runs were produced for the NDJF rainy season. Both driver model and Eta Model forecasts showed some internal variability in the SACZ and over the Andes regions. Comparison of the Eta Model seasonal forecasts against climatology showed that in general the model produced additional useful information over the climatology. Transient variability was evaluated by tracking the frontal passages along the eastern coast. The frontal timing was no longer captured by the model but some indication of the frequency and of the northward movement was given by the model forecast. Weekly precipitation totals were evaluated for the São Francisco Basin. Some parameters, such as the mean and the standard deviation of the 7-day total precipitation, were comparable to observations. The correlations between the forecast and the observed 7-day series were positive, but low..

ResumoA workshop on enhancing climate change indices in South America was held in Maccio. Brazil, in August 2004. Scientists from eight southern countries brought daily climalological data from their region for a meticulous assessment of data quality and homogeneity, and for the preparation of climate change indices that can be used for analyses of changes in climate extremes. This study presents an examination of the trends over 1960-2000 in the indices of daily temperature extremes. The results indicate no consistent changes in the indices based on daily maximum temperature while significant trends were found in the indices based on daily minimum temperature. Significant increasing trends in the percentage of warm nights and decreasing trends in the percentage of cold nights were observed at many stations. It seems that this warming is mostly due lo more warm nights and fewer cold nights during the summer (December-February) and fall (March -May). The stations with significant trends appear to be located closer to the west and east coasts of South America. Reprinted by permission of the publisher.

upper-level circulation
ResumoEl Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-related patterns of monthly reanalyzed upper-level circulation data and monthly rainfall time series over South America are revised for the 1948-1999 period considering the phases of the Pacific inter-Decadal Oscillation (PDO). The El Niño (EN) related composites show differences relative to the PDO phases as well as seasonal differences. EN signals in the South American rainfall are more conspicuous for the warm PDO (WPDO) regime, when seasonal differences are more pronounced, than for the cold PDO (CPDO). Differences for the 200-hPa stream function composites seem to determine the precipitation composite differences. In fact, the negative precipitation anomalies over northeast Brazil and the excessive rainfall to the south are explained respectively by a cyclonic center over eastern and northeastern Brazil and a weak anticyclonic center over southeastern South America for the WPDO regime. Positive precipitation anomalies over southeastern South America are located in a southern position for the CPDO regime when compared to those for the WPDO regime. These anomalies might be related to a strengthened upper-level subtropical jet stream associated with strong cyclonic circulation extending over southern South America for the CPDO regime. With regard to the linear and nonlinear parts of the precipitation anomaly patterns related to the ENSO, the nonlinear component is considerably smaller than the linear component, in particular, over northern and southeastern South America. This suggests that the linear approach of the South American precipitation response to the ENSO seems to be appropriated. Copyright © 2005 Royal Meteorological Society.

ResumoThe hydrometeorology of the Amazon basin in the ERA-40 reanalysis for 19582001 is compared with observations of precipitation, temperature, and streamflow. After 1979, the reanalysis over the Amazon has a small cool bias of the order of −0.35 K, and a small low bias of precipitation of the order of −0.3 mm day−1. In the early years (195872), there is a large upward drift in reanalysis precipitation and runoff associated with an upward drift in the atmospheric water vapor in the analysis, and a somewhat smaller downward drift of temperature as precipitation increases. In the presatellite data, there are inhomogeneities in the radiosonde and surface synoptic data, and there were problems with the variational analysis of humidity once satellite radiances were introduced. Approximate bias corrections can be made for precipitation and runoff on an annual basis, but this also removes some of the interannual variability. The reanalysis runoffprecipitation relationship is similar to the observed streamflowprecipitation relation, on an annual water-year basis. Compared to observations, ERA-40 precipitation for the Amazon is low by about 1.3 mm day−1 in the rainy season, and high by a smaller amount in the dry season. The precipitation bias produces a temperature bias in ERA-40 of the opposite sign on the annual time scale. The reanalysis has a small cold temperature bias after 1967, but on an annual time scale it reproduces the interannual variability of the observations. Although the biases in temperature and precipitation in recent decades are small, the difficulties with the analysis of atmospheric water vapor lead to large uncertainty in long-term trends of the water cycle..

ResumoThis paper presents a description of marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) and oceanic boundary layer (OBL) interactions at the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence. Although this region is known as one of the most energetic zones of the World Ocean, very few studies have addressed the mechanisms of OA interaction there. Based upon novel, direct in situ simultaneous OA observations, our results show that the OBL-MABL exchanges are closely correlated with the sea surface temperature (SST) field. The heat fluxes range from 110W. m(-2) over warm waters down to 18W. m(-2) over cold waters. Higher heat fluxes and air-sea temperature differences are associated with stronger near-surface winds. This suggests that the MABL is modulated at the synoptic temporal and spatial scale by the strong surface thermal gradients between the ( warm) Brazil and the ( cold) Malvinas ( Falklands) currents.

ResumoInstability waves in the tropical Atlantic Ocean are analysed by microwave satellite-based data spanning from 1998 to 2001. This is the first multi-year observational study of these waves in the region. Sea surface temperature (SST) data were used to show that the waves spectral characteristics vary from year-to-year. They also vary on each latitude north of the equator, with the region of 1°N, 15°W concentrating the largest variability when the time series is averaged along the years. Analyses of wind components show that meridional winds are more affected near the equator and 1°N, while zonal winds are more affected further north at around 3°N and 4°N. Concurrent observations of SST, wind, atmospheric water vapour, liquid cloud water, precipitation rates and wind were used to demonstrate the possible influence of these waves on the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). It seems that these instabilities have a large impact on the ITCZ due to its proximity of the equator, compared to its Pacific counterpart, and the geography of the tropical Atlantic basin. These analyses also suggest that the air-sea coupling mechanism suggested by Wallace can also be applied to the tropical Atlantic region.

ResumoThe Southeast Region of Brazil, which is affected during the summer , and by frontal systems in the winter, has the lowest predictability of the model this band subestimates in the northern part of this band and subestimates in the northern part (Cavalcanti et al. 2002). The southeasthern Brazil is a transition region, between the tropical regime to and the extratropical regime to the south, which has frontal systems during the whole year . In the summer, these systems interact with the tropical convection resulting in the SACZ. In this study, the number of frontal systems which affects southeasthern Brazil, their behaviour and large scale atmosphere characteristics, are analysed in a climate simulation.
