ResumoWe describe and begin to evaluate a parameterization to include the vertical transport of hot gases and particles emitted frombiomass burning in low resolution atmosphericchemistry transport models. This sub-grid transport mechanism is simulated by embedding a 1D cloud-resolvingmodel with appropriate lower boundary conditions in each column of the 3D host model. Through assimilation of remote sensing fire products, we recognize which columns have fires. Using a land use dataset appropriate fire properties are selected. The host model provides the environmental conditions, allowing the plume rise to be simulated explicitly. The derived height of the plume is then used in the source emission field of the host model to determine the effective injection height, releasing the material emitted during the flaming phase at this height. Model results are compared with CO aircraft profiles from an Amazon basin field campaign and with satellite data, showing the huge impact that this mechanism has on model performance. We also show the relative role of each main vertical transportmechanisms, shallow and deep moist convection and the pyro-convection (dry ormoist) induced by vegetation fires, on the distribution of biomass burning CO emissions in the troposphere.

ResumoThe EU HIBISCUS project consisted of a series of field campaigns during the intense convective summers in 2001, 2003 and 2004 in the State of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Its objective was to investigate the impact of deep convection on the Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL) and the lower stratosphere by providing a new set of observational data on meteorology, tracers of horizontal and vertical transport, water vapour, clouds, and chemistry in the tropical Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere (UT/LS). This was achieved using short duration research balloons to study local phenomena associated with convection over land, and long-duration balloons circumnavigating the globe to study the contrast between land and oceans. Analyses of observations of short-lived tracers, ozone and ice particles show strong episodic local updraughts of cold air across the lapse rate tropopause up to 18 or 19 km (420-440 K) in the lower stratosphere by overshooting towers. The long duration balloon and satellite measurements reveal a contrast between the composition of the lower stratosphere over land and oceanic areas, suggesting significant global impact of such events. The overshoots are shown to be well captured by non-hydrostatic meso-scale Cloud Resolving Models indicating vertical velocities of 50-60 m s(-1) at the top of the Neutral Buoyancy Level (NBL) at around 14 km, but, in contrast, are poorly represented by global Chemistry-Transport Models (CTM) forced by Numerical Weather Forecast Models (NWP) underestimating the overshooting process. Finally, the data collected by the HIBISCUS balloons have allowed a thorough evaluation of temperature NWP analyses and reanalyses, as well as satellite ozone, nitrogen oxide, water vapour and bromine oxide measurements in the tropics.

ResumoWe introduce the Coupled Aerosol and Tracer Transport model to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CATT-BRAMS). CATT-BRAMS is an on-line transport model fully consistent with the simulated atmospheric dynamics. Emission sources from biomass burning and urban-industrial-vehicular activities 5 for trace gases and aerosol particles are obtained from several published datasets and remote sensing information. The tracer and aerosol mass concentration prognostic includes the effects of sub-grid scale turbulence in the planetary boundary layer, convective transport by shallow and deep moist convection, wet and dry deposition, and plume rise associated with vegetation fires in addition to the grid scale transport. The 10 radiation parameterization takes into account the interaction between aerosol particles and short and long wave radiation. The atmospheric model BRAMS is based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), with several improvements associated with cumulus convection representation, soil moisture initialization and surface scheme tuned for the tropics, among others. In this paper the CATT-BRAMS model 15 is used to simulate carbon monoxide and particulate material (PM2.5) surface fluxes and atmospheric transport during the 2002 LBA field campaigns, conducted during the transition from the dry to wet season in the southwest Amazon Basin. Model evaluation is addressed with comparisons between model results and near surface, radiosonde and airborne measurements performed during the field campaign, as well as remote 20 sensing derived products. We show the matching of emissions strengths to observed carbon monoxide in the LBA campaign. A relatively good comparison to the MOPITT data, in spite of the fact that MOPITT a priori assumptions imply several difficulties, is also obtained.

ResumoWater vapor is an atmospheric component of major interest in atmospheric science, because it affects the energy budget and plays a key role in the several atmospheric processes. The Amazonian region is one of the most humid on the planet and land use change is able to affect the hydrologic cycle in several areas and consequently to generate severe modifications in the global climate. Within this context, accessing the error associated with atmospheric humidity measurement and the validation of IWV quantification from different techniques is very important in these regions. Using data collected during RACCI/DRY-TO-WET (Radiation, Cloud, and Climate Interactions in Amazonia during the DRY-TO-WET Transition Season) an experiment carried out in Southwestern Amazonia in 2002, this paper presents quality analysis of IWV (Integrated Water Vapor) measurements from RS80 radiosondes, a suite of GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, an AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) solar radiometer, and humidity sounding from HSB (Humidity Sounder for Brazil) aboard the AQUA satellite. When compared to RS80 IWV values, the RMS (Root Mean Square) from the AERONET and HSB sensor and GPS are to the order of 2.7, 7.7 and 4.3 kg m-2, respectively. The difference generated between IWV from the GPS receiver and RS80 during daytime was larger than the nighttime period due to the combination of the influence of high ionospheric activity during the RACCI experiment and a daytime drier bias from the RS80.

potential vorticity
ResumoThe horizontal and vertical structures of an upper air cold core vortex over the subtropical latitudes of South America in the winter of 1999 reveal many features that are different from tropical upper tropospheric cold core vortices. The vortex in the present study is observed poleward of the subtropical jetstreak. In the middle troposphere, the center of the vortex is cooler than the periphery by 6 degrees C. The relative vorticity is greatest just below the tropopause and the vortex presents a slight eastward tilt in the vertical. The CPTEC Eta regional model simulation dataset has been used to study the life cycle of the vortex. Intensification and movement of the system are well simulated by the combined effect of divergence and vorticity advection at 500hPa. The Lifted Index and CAPE values at the mature stage of the system are not sufficiently high to explain the precipitation associated with the vortex. However, Q-vector analysis of the model simulation datasets support the observed precipitation. The precipitation pattern closely follows the 700hPa vertical velocity. These results indicate that the rain associated with the vortex has been forced by dynamical lifting rather than by thermodynamic processes. Upper tropospheric stable conditions are responsible for the shallowness of convection. The vortex presented here is different from subtropical cyclones, which develop over oceans and have higher intensities. The present vortex development somewhat resembles lee development.

ResumoA data assimilation study was performed to assess the impact of observations from the South American Low-Level Jet Experiment (SALLJEX) on analyses in the region east of the Andes Mountains from western Brazil to central Argentina. The data assimilation systems, CDAS-1, CDAS-2 and GDAS, were run with and without the additional SALLJEX rawinsondes and pilot balloon observations. The experiments for each data assimilation system revealed similar features, with a stronger low-level flow east of the Andes when SALLJEX data were included. GDAS had the strongest LLJ when compared with observations. In the experiments which used additional rawinsonde and pilot balloons data, the LLJ was displaced westward in comparison to the analyses run without the SALLJEX data. The vertical structure of the meridional wind in the analyses was much closer to observed rawinsonde profiles in the experiments which included SALLJEX data than in the control experiments and the results show that, although there are more pilot balloon observations than rawinsonde observations in the SALLJEX dataset, most of the improvements in the analyses can be obtained by only including rawinsonde observations. This was especially true for GDAS. The results of this study can serve as a benchmark for similar data impact studies using higher resolution data assimilation systems.

ResumoForecasts of inflow into major reservoirs of the Brazilian hydroelectric power system are needed for the operational planning over periods ranging from a few hours to several months ahead. Medium-range forecasts of the order of a few days to two weeks have usually been obtained by simple ARMA-type models, which do not utilize information on observed or forecast precipitation, nor streamflow observations from upstream gauging stations. Recently, several different hydrological models have been tested to assess the potential improvements in forecasts that could be obtained by using observed and forecast precipitation as additional inputs. We present results from the use of a large-scale hydrological model applied to part of the Paranaiba river basin between Itumbiara and Sao Simao power plants (75,000 km(2)) using precipitation forecasts from the regional Eta model run by the Brazilian Center for Weather Prediction (CPTEC). Results were compared with those from the currently-used ARMA model and it is shown that forecast errors can be reduced considerably, during both wet and dry seasons. Further reductions in prediction errors may be anticipated from improved rainfall forecasts and of data quality used by the hydrological model. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved..

ResumoThe temporal evolution of the coupled variability between the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) and the underlying sea surface temperature (SST) during austral summer is investigated using monthly data from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. A maximum covariance analysis shows that the SACZ is intensified [weakened] by warm [cold] SST anomalies in the beginning of summer, drifting northward. This migration is accompanied by the cooling [warming] of the original oceanic anomalies. The results confirm earlier analyses using numerical models that suggest the existence of a negative feedback between the SACZ and the underlying South Atlantic SST field. A linear regression of daily anomalies of SST and omega at 500 hPa to the equations of a stochastic oscillator reveals a negative ocean-atmosphere feedback in the western South Atlantic, stronger during January and February directly underneath the oceanic band of the SACZ.

ResumoWe compared forecasts of the Center for Weather Prediction and Climate Studies (Centro de Previsao de Tempo e Estudos Climaticos-CPTEC) General Circulation Model (GCM) and the mesoscale Eta Model with observations undertaken at the Rondonia Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period (CEOP) reference site, Brazil, for the dry period between 1 July and 1 September 2001. The Rondonia site is located in the Jaru Biological Reserve Area in the state of Rondonia within the Amazon region. The site is forested and is one of the Reference Sites of the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in the Amazon Basin (LBA) Continental-Scale Experiment (CSE). Time series and mean diurnal cycles of precipitation, near-surface temperature, latent and sensible heat fluxes, surface incoming shortwave and net radiation fluxes are shown for 24-h and 48-h forecasts. In the global model, the predicted incoming shortwave radiation and net radiation are similar to observed values; however, this is accompanied by large overestimate of deep clouds and precipitation. Partition of the available energy results in an overestimate of the sensible heat fluxes and an underestimate of the latent heat fluxes. The latent heat fluxes are large shortly after rain, but decay quickly. No clear improvement is noted in the 48-h forecasts compared with the 24-h forecasts. The Eta Model is a grid-point limited-area model. Its precipitation forecasts are similar to observations; however, the model overestimates the incoming shortwave radiation, resulting in excessive net radiation. The Eta sensible and latent heat fluxes are both overestimated, and 48-h forecasts produce small improvements over the 24-h forecasts. Near-surface temperatures are overestimated by both models. The global model requires a reduction in precipitation production, and both models require a reduction in incoming short-wave radiation at the surface.
