Resumo | The predominant lobster species in the oceanic islands off northeast Brazilian coast (Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, and Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago) is the brown spiny lobster (Panulirus echinatus Smith, 1969), with nocturnal habits and inhabiting depths from 1 to 40 meters, mainly in waters less than 25 meters. Due to the increase of its market interest, insufficient scientific knowledge of the species, and a lack of fisheries legislation, it is extremely important to assess its bioecological information in order to guideline sustainable catches from such resource. For this study, the individuals were caught using cages called covos, in the area of Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago (SPSPA), which are very similar to those used by the commercial fleet of Rio Grande do Norte state. The findings show that the brown spiny lobster is the most abundant species of the Archipelago, with the catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of 6.58 Kg/covo/day, exhibiting higher catches than Rio Grande do Norte coast region. Considering the average length of first maturation (L50) for the species (13.5 mm), it was found that higher catches in the SPSPA were of individuals above this value. The average lengths were 192.1 mm and 177.3 mm TL, for males and females, respectively. Males were significantly more abundant than females for the majority of length classes. Taken into account seasonal period, the sexual rate was superior during raining season (5,3:1), in relation to dry season (3,6:1). On the other hand, the biggest individuals, considering length and weight, occurred during the dry season. In general, according to this study, it was verified that lobster fishery in the SPSPA were mainly focused on adult individuals. However, control measures of fisheries effort and artefacts are necessary and must be implemented as management actions in order to guarantee sustainable catches for the brown spiny lobster in the SPSPA. |
