ABSTRACT: The interaction between atmosphere and rough ocean includes exchange of mometum, heat, water vapor, and gases. The sea surface roughness length ($\textrm \,z_{0}$),the droplet production, and breaking waves are three important parameters in the study of the air-sea interaction dynamic, which are able to modify the transport at the interface, affecting weather and climate. The objectives of this research are (i) to evaluate, in the presence of waves, the effects of ($\textrm \,z_{0}$) the air-flow separation (AFS), the sheltered surface ($\emph{S}_{a}$) and the spume droplets production on the transfer of momentum and gas in theair-sea interface using a one-dimensional boundary layer model, (ii) to build a coupled ocean-droplet-atmosphere model system, and (iii) to use the coupled mo del to study the effects of the spume droplets and roughness length parameterizations on the cyclones evolution, dissipation, and tracks. Parameterizations that quantify the effect of the spume droplets on the CO$_{2}$ flux budget at the air-sea interface were developed. The results showed that the CO$_{2}$ flux due to the diffusion across the droplet surface $\Upsilon_{g}^{s}$ modifies the CO$_{2}$ budget, especially when 10-m wind speed ($^{u} _{10}$) is higher than 30 m($s^{-1}$). For ($^{u} _{10}$) equal to 50 m ($s^{-1}$) and wave spectrum with peak period of 16 s, $\Upsilon_{g}^{s}$: reached 70\% of the total CO$_{2}$ flux, controlling the budget at the interface. The evaluation of the momentum distribution over the waves showed that the shortwave spectrum is essential to calculate the distribution of momentum and the air-flow separation. Regarding the droplets production, the droplets have potential to saturate and reduce the wave drago However, this property is not observed in the simulations where only the effect of sheltered surface is considered . Moreover, a coupled ocean-droplet-atrnosphere model system was built, which consists of the ocean surface wave model WAVEWATCH III, the atmospheric model Weather Research Forecast and a complex model of droplets microphysics. In the coupled model, the effects of the air-flow separatíon, the sheltered surface, the spume droplets and the surface roughness length-were included. The competition between the droplets and the development of the sea was evaluated. For the study, the tropical storm Katrina and Isaac were chosen. The results showed that the droplets decrease $\textrm \,z_{0}$and increase ($^{u} _{10}$) besides to cool and moist the surface boundary layer by the evaporative cooling e increased the difference of temperature between the sea surface and the low atmosphere, and the turbulent motion at low levels, Thus, the vertical transport of water vapor and heat enhanced, favoring the storm intensification. On the other hand, the development of the sea increased the kinetic energy loss at the sea surface and reduced in the air-sea temperature difference. Then, the vertical motions were reduced in low levels, the reducing the storm intensity. The droplets and the development of the sea have the potential to affect the wave spectrum dynamic. In the presence of droplets, the significant wave height ($\emph{H}_{s}$) increased by 10\%. However, when the effect of the development of the sea was included in ($\textrm \,z_{0}$), ($\emph{H}_{s}$) was reduced by 20\%. |
