ResumoA quantitative study on the energetics of the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere system during High-Intensity, Long-Duration, Continuous AE Activity (HILDCAA) events for solar cycle 23 (from 1995 through 2008) is presented. For all HILDCAAs, the average energy transferred to the magnetospheric/ionospheric system was ~6.3 ×1016 J, and the ram kinetic energy of the incident solar wind was ~7.1 ×1018 J. For individual HILDCAA events the coupling efficiency, defined as the ratio of the solar wind energy input to the solar wind kinetic energy, varied between 0.3% and 2.8%, with an average value of ~0.9%. The solar wind coupling efficiency for corotating interaction region (CIR)-driven storms prior to the HILDCAA events was found to vary from ~1% to 5%, with an average value of ~2%. Both of these values are lower than the> 5% coupling efficiency noted for interplanetary coronal mass ejection (and sheath)-driven magnetic storms. During HILDCAAs, ~67% of the solar wind energy input went into Joule heating, ~22% into auroral precipitation, and ~11% into the ring current energy. The CIR-storm Joule heating (~49%) was noticeably less than that during HILDCAAs, while the ring current energies were comparable for the two. Joule dissipation was higher for HILDCAAs that followed CIR-storms (88%) than for isolated HILDCAAs (~60%). Possible physical interpretations for the statistical results obtained in this paper are discussed.

ResumoUntil very recently climate protection and energy security have been viewed as largely contradictory or separate matters. This scenario has changed in response to the ever-increasing energy demand in developing economies such as Brazil, China and India. In order to ensure a stable climate in a global sustainable development, while providing means for the improvement in our standards of life, we must make responsible decisions about our energy sources while searching for solutions to reduce the dependence on the fossil fuels in our energy matrix. Industrialized countries are responsible for the greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), that have built up in the atmosphere since the beginning of the industrial era. Nonetheless, a worldwide effort is now necessary to reverse or, at least, reduce their effects on climate and prevent future damage to the environment. Although no single solution can meet our society's future energy needs and, at the same time, reduce the buildup of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, some practical measures are possible. For example, the gradual but permanent substitution of fossil energy by renewable energy sources for electricity generation, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and bioenergy. To achieve this goal we must increase confidence on renewable energy by reducing barriers to the adoption of renewable technologies, encouraging investors, venture capital firms, independent power producers, and government purchasers of energy. This report represents a long-term Brazilian cooperative effort between the Electric Power Research Center (CEPEL), the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), and University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) to demonstrate the long-term potential for the large scale use of solar and wind energies in Brazil. It is one of the outputs of Project SWERA (Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment) for Brazil, which started in 2001 as a pilot project managed by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), co-financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and has expanded in 2006 into a full program. Its mission is to provide high quality information in suitable formats on renewable energy resources for countries and regions around the world, along with the tools needed to apply these data in ways that facilitate renewable energy policies and investments.

ResumoSlowing and eventually reversing the growth in global greenhouse gas emissions will require among other initiatives, the large-scale use of renewable energy technologies for production of thermal energy, electricity, and fuels. The Global Environment Facility (GEF)is committed to supporting the use of renewable energy technologies on an unprecedented scale throughout the world. The lack of reliable and sufficiently detailed and easily used solar and wind energy resource data is a primary obstacle to both public-sector and private-sector investments in renewable energy applications in the developing world. Thus there is a significant need to develop refined estimates of these resources world-wide, and to incorporate the information into a Geographic Information Systems (GIS)framework that will support effective regional and national planning, and prudent renewable energy investment decisions. Over the next several decades large-scale applications of wind electric and solar electric technologies could grow to several hundred thousand megawatts. By 2008 the European Wind Energy Association expects 70,000 MWe of wind electric capacity to be in place globally. The great majority is expected in Europe and the United States, despite of the enormous and growing potential in the developing world. Similarly, the potential applications of photovoltaic technologies are expected to continue to grow robustly (>30/year), with market breakthroughs as installed system prices fall below ca. US- 4 - 6 per watt over the coming decade. Solar thermal power plants may also achieve large-scale commercial.

ResumoFor intervals with intense geomagnetic activity it is shown that the solar wind coupling parameter epsilon and the magnetospheric output parameter Ut are equivalent and that ranges of values of epsilon can be set up in terms of values of the ring current-time constant tau. These conclusions were originally suggested by Akasofu (1981, Space Sci. Rev. 28, 111).

ResumoBrazils primary energy matrix is based on more than 47% of renewables, and more than 85% of its electricity is generated by hydro power sources. Despite this large fraction of renewable energy resources, less than 0.3% of the national energy supply comes from solar or wind sources. This paper presents a diagnostic review on the penetration of the solar and wind energy technologies in Brazil. It also includes a survey of the latest government policies and incentives for renewable energies deployment by entrepreneurs, industry and commercial and residential consumers. In addition, the paper analyses how to best meet the requirements for policy support and information technology to boost the deployment of solar technology and wind energy in Brazil. This study was mostly based on results of a widely distributed survey covering key issues, and also by personal interviews carried out with key stakeholders in order to better understand the issues highlighted in the survey responses. The study pointed out some of the main obstacles to effectively promote and improve government policies and actions for investment in solar and wind energy market in Brazil.

ResumoModern lifestyles demand a continuous and reliable supply of energy. It is in the heart of our mobility, our prosperity, our alimentation and our comfort (healthy care, leisure, education, etc). The human development is strongly related with the per capita consumption of energy and, as a consequence of improvement of the life quality in the developing countries, it is expected an annual growth of the energy demand of 4% in those countries, i.e. a duplication in the next 17 years [1]. It is possible to establish a cause/effect relation linking energy use and development with environmental damage as has been demonstrated by many researches. The third report produced by IPCC [2] confirmed that the Earths climate is changing as a result of human activities, mainly from fossil fuel energy use. The increase in energy demand, the reduction of the supply of conventional fuels caused by political crises in producing areas, and the growing concern with the preservation of the environment lead to the necessity of a sound survey for alternative energy resources. The IPCC report stated that alternative energy sources should be implemented over the next 20 years to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions [3]. Significant business opportunities will result from near term potential for renewable energy and related new industries. The mid and long-range energy planning require reliable information on many natural resources focusing the renewable energy policy. Without reliable information about existing resources, potential investors tend to avoid the risk of activities dealing with the development of solar and wind energy projects. Investors, risk capital enterprises, and independent energy producers are not aware of available renewable energy options.

ResumoGeomagnetic storms are large disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere caused by enhanced solar windmagnetosphere energy transfer. One of the main manifestations of a geomagnetic storm is the ring current enhancement. It is responsible for the decrease in the geomagnetic field observed at ground stations. In this work, we study the ring current dynamics during two different levels of magnetic storms. Thirty-three events are selected during the period 19812004. Eighteen out of 33 events are very intense (or super-intense) magnetic storms (Dst −250 nT) and the remaining are intense magnetic storms (−250<Dst −100 nT). Interplanetary data from spacecraft in the solar wind near Earth's orbit (ACE, IMP-8, ISEE-3) and geomagnetic indices (Dst and Sym-H) are analyzed. Our aim is to evaluate the interplanetary characteristics (interplanetary dawndusk electric field, interplanetary magnetic field component BS), the å parameter, and the total energy input into the magnetosphere (Wå) for these two classes of magnetic storms. Two corrections on the å energy coupling function are made: the first one is an already known correction in the magnetopause radius to take into account the variation in the solar wind pressure. The second correction on the Akasofu parameter, first proposed in this work, accounts for the reconnection efficiency as a function of the solar wind ram pressure. Geomagnetic data/indices are also employed to study the ring current dynamics and to search for the differences in the storm evolution during these events. Our corrected å parameter is shown to be more adequate to explain storm energy balance because the energy input and the energy dissipated in the ring current are in better agreement with modern estimates as compared with previous works. For super-intense storms, the correction of the Akasofu å is on average a scaling factor of 3.7, whilst for intense events, this scaling factor is on average 3.4. The injected energy during the main phase using corrected å can be considered a criterion to separate intense from very intense storms. Other possibilities of cutoff values based on the energy input are also investigated. A threshold value for the input energy is much more clear when a new classification on Dst=−165 nT is considered. It was found that the energy input during storms with Dst<−165 nT is double of the energy for storms with Dst>−165 nT.

ResumoBrazil and Germany have set ambitious targets in order to effectively address the challenges associated with climate change and promote sustainable development using natural resources. In this context, both countries have intensified efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of energy consumption and promote the commercial exploitation of renewable energy resources like solar and wind energy in order to meet the growing energy demand due to the Brazilian social and economic development with a sustainable and clean approach. The NoPa program is a joint collaboration among CAPES and DAAD in order to support scientific partnership between Brazilian and German research institutions.
