ResumoHigh-intensity, long-duration, continuous AE activity (HILDCAA) intervals during solar cycle 23 (19952008) have been studied by a superposed epoch analysis. It was found that HILDCAA intervals order the solar wind velocity, temperature and density (characteristic of high-speed solar wind intervals), the polar cap potential, and various other geomagnetic indices well. The interplanetary magnetic field Bz is generally negative, and the Newell solar wind coupling function is high during HILDCAA events. The HILDCAA intervals are well correlated with an enhancement of magnetospheric relativistic (E > 2 MeV) electron fluxes observed at geosynchronous orbit with a delay of ~1.5 days from the onset of the HILDCAAs. The response of the energetic electrons to HILDCAAs is found to vary with solar cycle phase. The initial electron fluxes are lower for events occurring during the ascending and solar maximum (AMAX) phases than for events occurring during the descending and solar minimum (DMIN) phases. The flux increases for the DMIN phase events are >50% larger than for the AMAX phase events. Although the solar wind speeds during the DMIN phases were slightly higher and lasted longer than during the AMAX phases, no other significant solar wind differences were noted. It is concluded that electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies most often and most efficiently during the DMIN phases of the solar cycle. We propose two possible solar UV mechanisms to explain this solar cycle effect.

ResumoTwo high speed stream (HSS) solar wind intervals (days 283¨C294 and 314¨C318, 2003, hereafter called Events 1 and 2) during the declining phase of solar cycle 23 have been examined in detail for their interplanetary characteristics and their resultant geomagnetic activity. Event 1 had an associated storm initial phase with peak Dst=+9 nT. This was caused by a high plasma density heliospheric plasma sheet (HPS) which impacted the magnetosphere. The southward component of IMF Bz fluctuations in the corotating interaction regions (CIRs) of both Events 1 and 2 led to peak storm main phases of Dst=−85 and −62 nT, respectively. The extended storm ¡°recovery¡± phases were associated with ¦¤B/Bo 1¨C2 Alfv¨¦nic fluctuations in the HSS proper. High-intensity, long-duration, continuous AE (HILDCAA) intervals were present, presumably due to the southward component of the Alfv¨¦n waves. The IMF Bx¨CVx 4-h cross-correlation values were >0.8 in Event 2, and lower, >0.6, in Event 1. The difference in Alfv¨¦nicity between the two HSS events is not understood at present. The IMF Bz 10-min to 3-h variances and are highest during the CIRs. The normalized variances during the HSS proper are approximately the same as those for the CIRs. For Event 1, the 1-h IMF and are 5.0 nT2 and 1.1¡Á10−1, respectively. The IMF Bz-AE cross-correlation (c.c.) coefficients during the storm main phase of Event 1 and for 24-h of the HSS of Event 2 give similar results. For the Event 1, a peak c.c. of −0.4 occurred with a lag of 103 min, and for Event 2 a peak c.c of −0.38 with a lag of 67 min was obtained. Both c.c. results were sharply peaked. The decay-portion of a HSS prior to Event 1 was characterized by low Np, low Bo and low Alfv¨¦n wave amplitudes. The 1-h IMF and were 0.84 nT2 and 2.9¡Á10−2, respectively. This quiet interplanetary interval led to a quiet geomagnetic activity period (AE<100 nT, Dst +5 nT). On the other hand, what is quite surprising is that this region was the most purely ¡°Alfv¨¦nic¡± interval studied (c.c. of Bx-Vx=0.95).The ¦Å parameter was calculated using both GSE and GSM coordinates. It was found that ¦Å is 30% larger for GSM coordinates. Thus, the major cause of geomagnetic activity during HSSs is the large amplitude Alfv¨¦n waves but not coordinate transformations. Sector polarities (IMF By values) may be a secondary factor. However, other models, like the tilted solar dipole, should be considered as well.

ResumoSolar cycle 24 started in 2008-2009 and a first peak (~67) in sunspot number (12-month running means) occurred in February 2012. Recently, sunspot activity seems to have increased. The latest 12-month running mean attained a value 74.5 centered at September 2013 and is larger than the previous maximum 67. Thus, cycle 24 peak could be as high as ~75 but further increase is not ruled out. Several other solar indices (2800 MHz solar radio flux, Lyman-a, Mg II 280 index, total solar irradiance, all of origin in chromosphere or lower corona) also showed peaks at February 2012. But coronal indices, X-rays and coronal mass ejection (CME) frequency showed broad plateaus around February 2012. In interplanetary parameters, solar wind speed (V) showed a broad peak earlier than February 2012 (during September 2010-October 2011) and a decline thereafter. The number density (N) did not seem to have any relationship with solar indices, but magnetic field (B) peaked near February 2012. The geomagnetic index (Ap) showed the same pattern as B. The decrease in maximum (peak) cosmic ray intensity at middle and high latitudes showed a delay with respect to peak of solar indices by several (more than ten) months. The main conclusion of the present communication is that during the maximum of cycle 24, the finer dynamic characteristics of the solar surface (photosphere) phenomena extend faithfully to the chromosphere and lower corona, but local dynamical effects occur higher up in the corona diluting the effects of the photospheric phenomena.

ResumoIn the present paper, we present the response of the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere to M and X class solar ares events that were registered in the descending phase of the solar cycle 24. It is well established that extreme solar ares may cause sudden changes in the ionospheric ionization density, including the equatorial and low latitudes regions. Therefore, we investigated the in uence of the solar ares in the ionospheric regions. It is based on a quantitative analysis of the time delay between the ionospheric response of the M and X class solar are events, as well as the intensity of such response. To perform this, we analyzed data from ionosondes installed in S~ao Lus - MA (2o 31' S, 44o 16' W), Cachoeira Paulista - SP (22o 39' S, 45o 00' W) and Boa Vista - RR (02o 49' N, 60o 40' W) during records of X-Ray ow changes associated with solar ares covering the period from 2014 to 2015 . Our results show the disappearance of echoes in the ionogram (knwon as HF radio blackouts) during the are event indicating absorption of radio signals in the D region, in which the response time depended of the solar are intensity.

ResumoWe study Alfvén wave fluctuations in solar-wind high-speed streams (HSSs) at high heliolatitudes during the last two solar-cycle minima (SCM). Solar-wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) measured by Ulysses during four 50-day intervals in 1994, 1995, 2007, and 2008 were analyzed using wavelet and Fourier analyses, cross-correlation and kurtosis techniques. Intervals during 1994 and 1995 (2007 and 2008) correspond to the Ulysses polar passes through the southern and northern solar hemispheres, respectively, during the minimum between Cycles 22 and 23 or SCM22−23 (the minimum between Cycles 23 and 24 or SCM23−24). The solar-wind plasma density [Np], IMF magnitude [B], and IMF-component variances are found to be lower during SCM23−24 than during SCM22−23 by ≈ 20 30%. The cross-correlation between the plasma velocity and IMF vector components, an indicative of Alfvénicity, is smaller during SCM23−24 than during SCM22−23. The Alfvén wave periodicity exhibits a large range, from ≈ 8 hours to 10 days, with peak occurrences near 1 5 days during both minima. The statistical kurtosis analysis shows that the IMF distributions are mostly sub-Gaussian. Further, the Fourier power law analysis reveals a higher spectral power of transverse IMF components Bt and Bn than the radial field-aligned component Br. The power spectrum shows a spectral break near 10−4 Hz, with its high-frequency portion following a −1.7 power law dependence (Kolmogorov spectrum), while the low-frequency portion shows an ≈ − 1.0 power law index dependence. This low-frequency index is slightly higher during SCM22−23 (−0.65 to −0.87) than during SCM23−24 (−0.49 to −0.78). We conclude that while the Alfvénicity of the high-latitude HSSs does not vary substantially between the two minima, the amplitude of the Alfvén wave fluctuations is reduced during SCM23−24 compared to SCM22−23.

ResumoThe descending phase of the solar cycle is characterized by the increased occurrence rate of solar coronal holes which emanated high-speed solar wind streams to the interplanetary space. As they propagate in the space they interact with the preceding slow solar wind and form large structures called interaction region or corotating interaction regions. Although these interplanetary structures do not cause intense geomagnetic storms, they are responsible by a variety of phenomena such as: long duration auroral activity, referred as HILDCAAs, electric field-driven effects, such as prompt penetration or disturbance dynamo, particle precipitation, ionospheric storms/neutral composition changes, disturbed equatorward wind system and others. In order to understand the influence of the solar wind on the ionospheric variability, we study the relationship between the distinct features of the coronal holes, solar wind, interplanetary and geomagnetic indices and parameters such as, solar wind speed, Vsw, interplanetary magnetic field, B, auroral electrojet index, AE, symmetric ring current, SymH, and the ionospheric parameters. After that, we analyzed the ionospheric response in the distinct phases of the storms, which is highly variable especially due to the high Alfvenicity of the magnetic field and to the extended recovery phase of the storms. For the purpose of this study, we used instruments including GNSS receivers, ionosondes, magnetometers, and other ground-based systems. This study may be useful for ionospheric modelling and Space Weather forecast models.

ResumoThe number of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) erupting from the Sun follows a trend similar to that of sunspot numbers during the rising and maximum phase of the solar cycle. In the declining phase, the CME number has large fluctuations, dissimilar to those of sunspot numbers. In several studies of solar -aEuro parts per thousand interplanetary and solar -aEuro parts per thousand terrestrial relationships, the sunspot numbers and the 2800-MHz flux (F10) are used as representative of solar activity. In the rising phase, this may be adequate, but in the declining phase, solar parameters such as CMEs may have a different behaviour. Cosmic-ray Forbush decreases may occur even when sunspot activity is low. Therefore, when studying the solar influence on the Earth, one has to consider that although geomagnetic conditions at solar maximum will be disturbed, conditions at solar minimum may not be necessarily quiet.

ResumoWe present the results of an investigation from the Sun to the Earth of the sequence of events that caused major Dst decreases (¦¤Dst¡(C100 nT during 1 h) that occurred during 1996¨C2005. These events are expected to be better related to geomagnetic induced current (GIC) events than those events where any geomagnetic index is far from its quiet time value. At least one full halo CME with a speed on the plane of sky above 900 km/s participates in every studied event. The seven events were triggered by interplanetary signatures, which arise as a consequence of interaction among different solar ejections. The interaction arises at different stages from the solar surface, between segments of a filament, to the interplanetary medium, appearing as ejecta or multiple-magnetic clouds (MultiMCs). In other cases, shock waves overtake or compress previous ICMEs and at other times the interaction also appears between magnetic clouds (MCs) and streams.
