ResumoThe design of the satellite attitude control system (ACS) becomes more complex when the satellite structure has different type of components like, flexible solar panels, antennas, mechanical manipulators, and tanks with fuel. A crucial interaction can occur between the fuel slosh motion and the satellite rigid motion during translational and/or rotational manoeuvre since these interactions can change the satellite centre of mass position damaging the ACS pointing accuracy. Although, a well-designed controller can suppress such disturbances quickly, the controller error pointing may be limited by the minimum time necessary to suppress such disturbances thus affecting the satellite attitude acquisition. As a result, the design of the satellite controller needs to explore the limits between the conflicting requirements of performance and robustness. This paper investigates the effects of the interaction between the liquid motion (slosh) and the satellite dynamics in order to predict what the damage to the controller performance and robustness is. The fuel slosh dynamics is modelled by a pendulum which parameters are identified using the Kalman filter technique. This information is used to design the satellite controller by the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) methods to perform a planar manoeuvre assuming thrusters are actuators. © 2014 Luiz Carlos Gadelha de Souza and Alain G. de Souza.

Although, a well-designed controller can suppress such disturbances quickly, the controller error pointing may be limited by the minimum time necessary to suppress such disturbances affecting thus the satellite attitude acquisition. It is known that one way to minimize such problems is to design controllers with a bandwidth below the lowest slosh and/or vibration mode which can result in slow maneuvers inconsistent with the space mission requirements. As a result, the design of the satellite controller needs to explore the limits between the conflicting requirements of performance and robustness. This paper investigates the effects of the interaction between the liquid motion (slosh) and the flexible satellite dynamics in order to predict what the damage to the controller performance and robustness is. The fuel slosh dynamics is modeled using its pendulum analogs mechanical system which parameters are identified using the Kalman filter technique. This information is used to designs and to compare the satellite attitude control system by the Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) and Hinfinity methods.

ResumoA Computational Intelligent (CI) mechanism for control system design employing robust and random search techniques applied to a satellite model and using a reaction wheel is presented in this paper. The embedding of computational intelligence mechanisms in control system design can be attractive for on-board re-design purposes, according to the FireSat satellite model considered here. Moreover, it is demonstrated that effective search and scoring procedures can replace human-performed trial-and-improvement actions for gain computation, and produce performance indexes and torque levels compatible with real world specifications. The Computational Intelligence mechanisms employed in this paper intertwine genetic algorithm, which generates, combines, and selects candidate controllers, with fuzzy system, for scoring performance indexes and torque levels of the controller candidates which, in turn, are subsequently used by the genetic algorithm. A combination of this design approach, recently proposed by the authors in a previous paper, demonstrated its usefulness according four different techniques, while in this paper an H2 truncated controller is adopted in order to consider the disadvantage of robust techniques that usually supply high-order controllers.

ResumoIn this paper, a fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is designed to be applied in the satellite attitude control system equipped with reaction wheels. An analysis of the scaling factor is developed to verify its influence during an attitude maneuver. The settling time and the pointing accuracy are the mission requirements that control system have to satisfy. The equations and theoretical concepts are introduced throughout this paper. The results showed that the adequate selection of the scaling factor contributes to the improvement of control results.

ResumoThe satellite Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) can be designed with success by linear control theory if the satellite has slow angular motions and small attitude maneuver. However, for large and fast maneuvers, the linearized models are not able to represent all the perturbations due to the effects of the nonlinear terms present in the dynamics and in the actuators. Therefore, in such cases, it is expected that nonlinear control techniques yield better performance than the linear control techniques. One candidate technique for the design of AOCS control law under a large maneuver is the State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE). SDRE entails factorization (that is, parameterization) of the nonlinear dynamics into the state vector and the product of a matrix-valued function that depends on the state itself. In doing so, SDRE brings the nonlinear system to a (not unique) linear structure having State-Dependent Coefficient (SDC) matrices and then it minimizes a nonlinear performance index having a quadratic-like structure. The non uniqueness of the SDC matrices creates extra degrees of freedom, which can be used to enhance controller performance; however, it poses challenges since not all SDC matrices fulfill the SDRE requirements. Moreover, regarding the satellite's kinematics, there is a plethora of options, e.g., Euler angles, Gibbs vector, Modified Rodrigues Parameters (MRPs), quaternions, etc. Once again, some kinematics formulations of the AOCS do not fulfill the SDRE requirements. In this paper, we evaluate the factorization options of SDC matrices for the AOCS exploring the requirements of the SDRE technique. Considering a Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) typical mission, in which the AOCS must stabilize a satellite in threeaxis, the application of the SDRE technique equipped with the optimal SDC matrices can yield gains in the missions. The initial results show that MRPs for kinematics provides an optimal SDC matrix.

Nonlinear Optimal Control
ResumoIn this work a new multi-objective optimization algorithm is presented. The main motivation to develop this new evolutionary algorithm, called M-GEOreal, is to improve the performance and robustness of the M-GEO algorithm previously developed and available in the literature. As a brand new algorithm, several tests have been performed previously with well-known test functions commonly used to verify the performance and robustness of optimization algorithm. In this work the performance and robustness of the M-GEOreal algorithm is investigated in a practical problem, which consist in designing a non-linear control law to control a rigid-flexible satellite attitude. The multi-objective control law requirements are to minimize, simultaneously, the time and the energy during the satellite attitude maneuver. A great advantage of this multi-objective approach is to deal with a set of optimised trade-off creating a region of solutions (non-dominated) available to the designer for posterior choice of an individual solution to be implemented. The non-dominated solutions are represented in the design space (Pareto optimal set) and in the objective functions space (Pareto front). From this design space one gets the best non-linear control law gains to satisfy the performance and robustness requirements of the satellite attitude control system. It is also important to stress that the besides the M-GEOreal be an optimization algorithm it is able to deal with non-linear system, designing a nonlinear control law. From the Pareto Front one obverses that M-GEOreal results are superior to the others two techniques, since its non-control law spend less energy to the same maneuvers time. The better robustness of the M-GEOreal is characterized by the fact that it is able to control a non-linear plant.

ResumoThe problem of maneuvering a satellite relative to a desired noninertial reference is examined by using linearizing transformations and the concept of relative quaternion. The rigid body attitude equations are transformed into an equivalent linear form which considers the fact that the control purpose is to align the satellite with a moving reference frame (e.g., and Earth resource satellite). The equations so obtained are used to design control strategies for stabilizing the satellite attitude by linear techniques. This approach is more useful for algorithm design for on-board processors than the technique using inertial quaternion since the laws obtained are a function of the noninertial sensor outputs (sun sensors, earth sensors, etc.)and of the inertial sensor (gyroscopes)outputs.
