ResumoThe southeast region of Brazil experienced in austral summer 2014 a major drought event leading to a number of impacts in water availability for human consumption, agricultural irrigation and hydropower production. This study aims to perform a diagnostic analysis of the observed climate conditions during this event, including an inspection of the occurred precipitation anomalies in the context of previous years, and an investigation of possible relationships with sea surface temperatures and atmospheric circulation patterns. The sea surface temperature analysis revealed that the southwestern South Atlantic Ocean region near the coast of southeast Brazil showed strong negative association with precipitation over southeast Brazil, indicating that increased sea temperatures in this ocean region are consistent with reduced precipitation as observed in summer 2014. The circulation analysis revealed prevailing anti-cyclonic anomalies at lower levels (850 hPa) with northerly anomalies to the west of southeast Brazil, channeling moisture from the Amazon towards Paraguay, northern Argentina and southern Brazil, and drier than normal air from the South Atlantic Ocean towards the southeast region of Brazil. This circulation pattern was found to be part of a large-scale teleconnection wave train linked with the subsidence branch of the Walker circulation in the tropical east Pacific, which in turn was generated by an anomalous tropical heat source in north/northeastern Australia. A regional Hadley circulation with an ascending branch to the south of the subsidence branch of the Walker circulation in the tropical east Pacific was identified as an important component connecting the tropical and extratropical circulation. The ascending branch of this Hadley circulation in the south Pacific coincided with an identified Rossby wave source region, which contributed to establishing the extratropical component of the large-scale wave train connecting the south Pacific and the Atlantic region surrounding southeast Brazil. This connection between the Pacific and the Atlantic was confirmed with Rossby ray tracing analyses. The local circulation response was associated to downward air motion (subsidence) over Southeast Brazil, contributing to the expressive negative precipitation anomalies observed during summer 2014, and leading to a major drought event in the historical context. The analysis of atmospheric and oceanic patterns of this event helped defining a schematic framework leading to the observed drought conditions in southeast Brazil, including the involved teleconnections, blocking high pressure, radiative and humidity transport effects.

ResumoDrought is documented in causing drawdowns of surface reservoirs and impacting water supplies all over the globe. One such documented case occurred in Southern Brazil, over the Cantareira System (CS), one of the largest in the world, as well as one used to supply 8.8 million customers, including metropolitan São Paulo city. The March 2014 prolonged drought over the region supplying the Cantareira System caused a drop in the reservoirs down to 14.0% of their usable capacity, its lowest recorded level since 1974, the year of commencement of operation. Southeastern South America has a well-defined wet austral summer monsoon, with a marked precipitation regime of more than 800 mm of accumulated precipitation over the region, which was significantly curtailed during the drought episode. The large-scale atmospheric and oceanic patters are investigated to highlight the mechanisms associated with the drought event. In this paper, we investigated possible teleconnections of the capacity of the reservoir and sea surface temperature at remote regions. The Standard Precipitation Index (SPI), used to characterize the severity of precipitation deficiency, illustrates the magnitude and spatial extent of the interruption of precipitation supply. The paper concludes with an analysis of the performance of the seasonal precipitation forecast for December, January and February 2014 produced with the operational seasonal prediction system used at the Center for Weather Forecasts and Climate Studies of the National Institute for Space Research (CPTEC/INPE).

ResumoSouth of Minas Gerais state, in Southeast Brazil, is known for the coffee crop production (more than 30% of country's production) and hydroelectricity generation (1216 MW installed power). Droughts are natural climate phenomena that may strongly affect a region during a certain period. In this study, the severity of the droughts that hit southern Minas Gerais state was analyzed in the period from 1970 to 2020 and was projected up to 2098/2099 using four global circulation models (HadGEM2-ES, MIROC5, BESM, CanESM2), downscaled by Eta model to 20-km resolution, under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). To access the severity of the droughts, the Standard Precipitation Index considering the hydrological year (SPI12) was investigated over time and space. The results demonstrated that the 2013-2014 hydrological year was the dryest in southern Minas Gerais, followed by 2014/2015, which led to water shortage, reduction of the hydroelectricity and reduction of coffee crop production. Future projections indicate that extreme droughts will continue occurring, but with similar rarity. However, the RCM downscaling pointed out the possible occurrence of several dry consecutive years, which can collapse the hydrology and put at risk the economy of the region. Except from the Eta-MIROC under RCP 8.5, that simulated most of the droughts in middle to the end of XXI century, the other RCMs projected recurrent droughts for the next two decades, supporting the detection drought anomalies and helping in adoption actions to anticipate and mitigate drought effects in the future.

ResumoIn two recent Austral summers (between the years 2013/14 and 2014/15), a southeastern region of Brazil suffered a period of severe drought. The main convective activity during the summer (mainly responsible for the rain) is an interconnected band of cloudiness with NW / SE orientation, which extends from the adjacent Atlantic Ocean to the SW of the Amazon, being called the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). In addition to the SACZ, the passage of frontal systems also affects the rainfall distribution as well as some moisture oceanic input from the Atlantic Subtropical High pressure. Thus, the main objective of this work is to compute the moisture transfer from the Amazon region to the south and southeast of Brazil and associate it with the precipitation pattern. In addition, the influence of different types of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the moisture flow, for instance, Central (higher temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific) and East (higher temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific) were also studied. The summer of 2013/14 was the driest of the series (1979 - 2016). Although it was below the climatology, the precipitation trend found for the period is not significant, according Mann-Kendall test. However, it is clearly notable the importance of the moisture transport from the Amazon region to the southeast in neutral years, providing huge accumulated rainfall. Moreover, it is possible to affirm that there is a such significant difference in the intensity of the moisture flow in neutral years. Although, this intensity can be influenced by the position of the greatest anomaly of the sea surface temperature (ASST) in the Pacific. In other words, if this anomaly is greater in the eastern portion of the ocean (named as East El Niño Leste) an intensification in the flow is identified which will produce a greater amount of moisture in the regions. However, if the ASST is greater in the central region (El Niño Central), this intensification is lower, which may result in changes in the volume of precipitation in the region.

Regional Simulation
ResumoThe present work investigates circulation patterns associated to the extremes of intraseasonal precipitation over the South and Southeast of Brazil as simulated by regional climate model RegCM3 (Regional Climate Model). We analyzed ten austral summer simulations, from 1989 to 1998, that were initiated and driven by NCEP reanalysis. The quantis technique was applied in the simulated daily precipitation to identify dry and wet extremes periods. Composites for wet periods over South and Southeast of Brazil show a dipole pattern in the precipitation anomalies between the two regions. During wet periods over Southeast, the anomalies of moisture fluxes present anticiclonic circulation over central Brazil and the transport of heat and moisture from Amazon basin is directed to southeast of Brazil. This circulation is inverted during the wet periods over the South, when there is an intensification of moisture and heat transport to this region. These composites show that RegCM3 simulated the circulations pattern, associated to wet periods, similar to those obtained in several observational studies. Composites of dry periods over the South also present intense precipitation over Southeast, although, there are differences in the circulation pattern compared to wet periods over Southeast. The moisture flux and transient of the divergence of moisture flux in the atmosphere were compared to investigate the differences in the circulation. The dry periods over the South indicates intense transient activity over the Southeast, which suggests the presence of transients systems (as cold fronts). On the other hand, the composites of wet periods over Southeast present characteristics of stationary systems, which is an indicative of the contribution of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). Composites of the circulation during dry periods over the Southeast are very similar to the wet periods over the South Brazil.

São Paulo-Brazil
ResumoThe State of São Paulo in Southeast Brazil experienced during the 2012/2013 summer one of the most severe electrical storm events in recent years, causing various impacts to society, e.g. fires and fatalities. Thus, the objective of this work is to understand which mechanisms and climatic variability modes are associated with the lightning incidence during this summer in this region. The study includes a statistical-temporal assessment of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning occurrence comprising the 16 years period from 1999 to 2014. The results showed that, for this period of analysis, the lightning incidence was associated with climatic patterns connecting the tropical and extratropical region, through a wave train, from the Indian Ocean to South America, favouring the formation and development of convective storms over Southeast Brazil.

ResumoThe development of novel diagnostic tools for enhancing climate monitoring capabilities is being increasingly demanded by several important societal sectors, such as agriculture, energy production, and industry, among others. This study aims to contribute to such developments by characterizing the observed daily precipitation conditions within the climatic context for the austral summer months over the southeast region of the state of SAo Paulo, Brazil. The characterization was designed to quantify the climatological features of daily precipitation and of the number of rainy (or wet) days. The objective is to provide complementary information to the traditionally available monthly and annual precipitation monitoring. Such a diagnostic characterization can assist answering the following questions: How did daily precipitation behave in southeast SAo Paulo during the last two decades? What is the typical distribution of summer precipitation in southeast SAo Paulo? How many wet summer days are typically observed in southeast SAo Paulo? How many wet summer days were observed during the last two decades? What is the typical distribution of wet summer days in southeast SAo Paulo? How have the latest years been in terms of wet summer days? The daily precipitation and wet day characterization was performed using historical data for the 1998/1999 to 2017/2018 period. The representativeness of these characteristics was assessed using a four times longer time series from a meteorological station located within the investigated region. The analysis indicated that for the southeast region of the state of SAo Paulo, the 2013/2014 summer period presented values well below those previously recorded in association with exceptionally dry conditions established over this region, corroborating previous findings but now from the perspective of daily precipitation information.

ResumoSince the austral summer of 2014 southeastern Brazil has been experiencing one of the most severe droughts in decades. This rainfall deficiency has generated water shortages and a water crisis that have affected population and local economies in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo, the largest megacity in South America. By January 2015, main reservoirs had reached storage levels of only 5% of their 1.3 billion m3 capacity. The meteorological causes of the drought situation were linked to changes in the regional circulation, characterized by a mid-troposphere blocking high that lasted 45 days during the summer of 2014 over southeastern Brazil, something not seen in five decades. The water crisis was aggravated by a combination of lack of rainfall and higher temperatures, the summer of 2014 being the warmest and driest over the Cantareira reservoir system since 1951. Increasing population and water consumption increased vulnerability in the region, and while human-induced warming may not have generated the atmospheric conditions behind the 2014 and 2015 summer droughts in Southeast Brazil, it is more likely that the warm temperatures have affected the severity of the drought and exacerbated the impacts on the population.

ResumoThe Southeast Region of Brazil is densely populated with high agricultural productivity, industrial activity and hydroelectric generation. Large precipitation deficits observed during the 2001 austral summer over this region contributed to the worsening of the energy crisis that was occurring in the country, with unprecedented social and economic consequences. Reliable information on the beginning of rainy season was essential for the Brazilian government to manage the energy crisis. The purpose of this study is to determine the rainy season in this region and to warn the risk of using OLR data to estimate the beginning of it. Pentad (5-day averaged) rainfall and OLR data showed that when OLR data is used, the beginning and the end dates of the rainy season are wrongly anticipated and delayed, respectively. This suggests that one should be careful in using OLR data to obtain information about the beginning and end of the rainy season. The present study aims to provide useful information for the management of the impact of adverse climate conditions such as the one in 2001, analysed with rainfall instead of OLR.
