ResumoIn this paper we carry out a comparative study of the daytime (7-18 LT) behavior of the near-equatorial ionospheric F region at the end of the long deep solar minimum (2009) with respect to that of the previous normal solar minimum (1995) in the Indian longitude sector using ionosonde observations of F layer parameters, radar observations of ExB drift, and the IRI-2012 (International Reference Ionosphere-2012) model. We investigate the F-2 and F-3 layer behaviors separately. The results reveal that the peak frequencies of the F layer (f(peak)), F-2 layer (f(o)F(2)), and F-3 layer (f(o)F(3)) in 2009 are consistently lower than those in 1995. Maximum difference in f(peak)/f(o)F(2)/f(o)F(3) between 2009 and 1995 observations is found in the equinoxes followed by winter and summer. The annual mean, seasonal mean, and 10day mean peak electron density (corresponding to f(peak)) in 2009 were lower than those in 1995 by as much as 34%, 46%, and 65%, respectively. Solar rotation effect is less conspicuous in 2009 than in 1995, consistent with the solar rotation signature in F-10.7. Observations also show considerable amount of equinoctial asymmetry in electron density, which is found to be closely linked with the corresponding asymmetry in the vertical ExB drift. Seasonal mean peak electron densities of the F layer (corresponding to f(peak)) and the F-2 layer (corresponding to f(o)F(2)) observed during the deep solar minimum of 2009 were smaller than those corresponding to IRI-2012 model f(o)F(2) by as much as 45% and 50%, respectively, underlining the need to incorporate the data collected during the long deep minimum in the IRI model. The unusually weak ionosphere observed in 2009 is discussed in terms of the direct effect of the low solar EUV flux in 2009 as compared to 1995 and its indirect effects on ionospheric electric field, thermospheric composition (or O/N-2 ratio), and thermospheric neutral winds.

ResumoThis work presents the daytime behavior of the intermediate layer (ILs) parameters (the virtual height - h'IL, and the top frequency - ftIL) over the low-latitude region of Cachoeria Paulista (CP, 22.42 degrees S; 45 degrees W, I: -34.59 degrees) during the 2009 deep solar minimum. Under such a unique condition, this research reveals the ILs' quiet state seasonal behavior as well as its responses to moderate changes in the geomagnetic activity. The main results show that even small variations of geomagnetic activity (quantified by the planetary Kp index) are able to modify the dynamics of the ILs parameters. For the first time, it was observed that during the summer, the h'IL decreases rapidly with the increase of geomagnetic activity, mainly in the early morning hours, while in the following hours, a smoothed rise of the IL was found in all seasons analyzed. Regarding the IL frequency, it was observed that after 12:00 LT, there is a tendency to decrease with the increase of magnetic disturbances, this characteristic being more intense after 16:00 LT for summer and winter. For the equinox, such variation was detected, however with half of the amplitude of the other seasons. In addition, the domain of the annual periodicity of the ftTL stands out, while the h'IL presents a semiannual component under the condition of geomagnetic quiet.

ResumoIn this study, we investigate the dependence of the intermediate layers (ILs) altitudes/vertical velocities on the geomagnetic activity during the rather extended duration solar minimum of 2009. Based on an empirical climatological model developed from Digisonde data over the Brazilian low latitude station Cachoeira Paulista (22.42° S; 45° W, I: -34.4°), the virtual height (hIL) and the top frequency (ftIL) of the ILs were analyzed as a function of the different levels of Kp index. Our results show that even a small variation in the geomagnetic activity during low solar activity can affect the ILs altitudes over Cachoeira Paulista. A downward movement of the ILs probably due to an overshielding electric field was observed during the early morning. Besides that, during daytime, the smooth rise of the ILs can be related to the regular undisturbed day-to-day F-region zonal electric field of the ionosphere.

ResumoGPS scintillations are caused by irregularities in the ionospheric plasma density. At low magnetic latitudes, irregularities occur mostly just after sunset, due to an increase in the eastward electric field, the pre-reversal enhancement electric field, a phenomenon due to the ionospheric dynamo. This intense eastward electric field drives the plasma up fast and usually causes the formation of plasma density irregularities. These plasma irregularities cause ionospheric scintillations, which are fluctuations in radio signals received from artificial satellites or natural sources like stars and galaxies. Scintillations are intense during periods of maximum solar activity. Now, however, they are very weak, especially in GPS signals, since the Sun has stationed around a minimum of activity. It is believed that plasma bubbles originate at the magnetic equator and then propagate through higher latitudes by moving up and diffusing along magnetic field lines. For this reason, only very low latitudes show scintillations, now. We have chosen two low latitude stations, almost aligned with the same magnetic meridian, São Luis (dip -4.5°, at 300 km) and Natal (dip -28°, at 300 km) both with a -20° declination. Scintillations were recorded at both stations at the rate of 50 samples per second per satellite, for the period of September/2008 through March/2009. To compare the scintillations at both stations the S4 index is averaged first hourly, for all satellites, and then for the whole night for all satellites. A surprising result is that it is not clear from the data that the irregularities are being produced at the lower latitude station and then moving to the higher latitude station. Some results show an increase of scintillations in Natal, which does not occur in São Luis. These results are discussed in terms of production of irregularities at Natal, at São Luis, and at other sites, estwards, and then moving west to these stations.

ResumoIn this work, we have performed a study for the first time on the climatology of the intermediate descending layers (ILs) over Brazilian equatorial and low-latitude regions during the extreme solar minimum period of 2009. The result of this study shows that the occurrence frequency of the ILs is very high, being > 60 % over São Luís (2ĝ S, 44ĝ W; inclination: -3.8ĝ) and > 90 % in Cachoeira Paulista (22.42ĝ S, 45ĝ W; inclination: -33.5ĝ). In most cases the ILs occur during the day at altitudes varying from 130 to 180 km and they may descend to lower altitudes (ĝ1/4100 km) in a time interval of a few minutes to hours. The main driving force for the ILs at the low-latitude region, may be considered to be the diurnal tide (24 h) followed in smaller dominance by the semidiurnal (12 h), terdiurnal (8 h) and quarter-diurnal (6 h) components. In the magnetic equatorial sector, similar behavior was seen, with the exception of the semidiurnal tide, which in general does not appear to have influenced the IL's dynamics (except in summer). Additionally, the IL mean descent velocity over São Luís and Cachoeira Paulista shows a day-to-day variability that may be associated with a wave-like perturbation with a periodicity of some days. Some peculiarities in the IL dynamics were noted, such as the presence of the ILs during the night hours. Ascending and descending ILs appeared to have been formed from some connection with the ionospheric F layer. Quite often, these characteristics are observed in the presence of strong signatures of the gravity wave propagation as suggested by the F layer traces in the ionogram. The descending intermediate layer over Brazil appears to have been formed through a process of F1 layer base detachment. An interesting case study showed that an ascending ILs, initially detected at ĝ1/4130 km, reached the base of the F2 layer, due probably to the gravity wave propagation and/or the effect of a prompt penetration electric field.

ResumoThe total electron content (TEC) derived from two Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers localized at Palmas (PAL, 10.2ºS, 48.2ºW, dip latitude 5.5ºS), near equatorial region, and São José dos Campos (SJC, 23.2ºS, 45.9ºW, dip latitude 17.6ºS), under the southern crest of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), in the Brazilian sector are used in this paper. TEC from the latest available IRI-2012 model at the same locations is also used. A comparative study between GPS-TEC and the IRI-2012 model is analyzed during the deep low solar activity period of 2009 in the unusual solar cycle 23. The measurements and the modeled data show that the IRI-TEC model gives the better estimates of the GPS-TEC during the nighttime from January to December months at PAL and SJC. The IRI-TEC model shows larger differences from the GPS-TEC in the afternoon hours, mainly at SJC. These discrepancies observed at SJC in the afternoon hours for all months are possibly due to the dynamics of EIA in consequence of the equatorial fountain effect. At PAL and SJC, oscillations of GPS-TEC with periods around 16 days in April and periods around 27-32 days between September and December possibly are noticed which could be related to a modulation of the semidiurnal tide and Suns rotation, respectively. Also, oscillations with periods around 2-4 and 5-10 days from January to December are observed at PAL and SJC, possibly associated with the propagation of planetary waves.
