ResumoThis work integrates geomorphological, sedimentological, and palynological data with radiocarbon dating, as well as C-13, N-15, and C/N from sedimentary organic matter to provide a model of mangrove dynamics during the evolution of a wave-dominated delta in Southeastern Brazil. Mangrove dynamics are analyzed within the context of millennial and secular climatic and sea-level changes. Tidal flats, positioned at highest limit of the intertidal zone along the edge of a lagoon sheltered by beach ridges, were occupied by wetlands represented by mangrove and herbaceous vegetation during the mid-Holocene high sea level. After considering the relative sea-level fall and relatively higher fluvial sediment discharge, during the last similar to 6350years, progradation took place along this shoreline, resulting in extensive beach ridge deposits that overlie transgressive muds. This process led to loss of mangrove area. Similar dynamics were repeated at similar to 3043cal. yr BP, although in a relatively more distal (i.e. seaward) position. Between similar to 1337 and similar to 900cal. yr BP, a tidal flat attached to the edge of a lagoon near the modern coastline was colonized by herbaceous vegetation (C4 plants). The next phase, which occurred between similar to 900 and similar to 400 or similar to 100cal. yr BP, is marked by the transition from herbaceous to mangrove tidal flats with an increased trend of terrestrial organic matter. During the recent centuries, a mangrove vegetation became established, and there was an increased trend of estuarine-derived organic matter. This mangrove phase, recorded during the last century(ies), may be due to a relative sea-level rise. Under this scenario, erosion of beach ridges and expansion of lagoons and mangroves are expected along the littoral of the State of Espirito Santo in Southeastern Brazil.

ResumoThe reconstruction of physical environments of Amazonian areas is of great interest to determine the dynamic evolution of the Amazon drainage basin. However. few studies have emphasized the Quaternary deposits in this region. which is mostly due to the lack of natural exposures imposed by the low topography. This work integrates facies analysis. radiocarbon dating, delta C-13, delta N-15, and C/N of an 124 m-thick core from an area located at the mouth of the Amazon River. northeastern Amazonia. The study records deposits up to 50.795 C-14 yr B P. in age. which formed in a variety of depositional environments including fluvial channel, tidal flat, outer estuarine basin to shallow marine. inner estuarine basin, estuarine channel and lagoon. Facies interpretation was significantly improved with the inclusion of delta C-13, delta N-15, and C/N analyses of organic matter extracted from the sediments The obtained values conform to a transitional. mostly estuarine paleosetting evolved during successive relative sea-level fluctuations. The results suggest fluvial deposition between 40,950 (+/- 590) and 50.795 C-14 yr B P, with a rise in relative sea level that commenced between 35,567 (+/- 649) and 39,079 (+/- 1114) C-14 yr B P. An overall transgression took place until 29,340 (+/- 340) C-14 yr B P., after which the relative sea level dropped, favoring valley rejuvenation and incision. Following this time up to 10,479 (+/- 34) C-14 yr B.P. a rise in relative sea level filled up the valley with estuarine deposits After 10.479(+/- 34) C-14 yr B.P., the estuary was replaced by a lagoon At the end of the Holocene, the coastline prograided approximately 45 km northward, replaci ng the lagoon by a lake system Despite the influence of eustatic fluctuations. regional tectonics played a significant role to create new space where these Late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments accumulated. ResumoThe present study investigates a paleo-estuary at the Doce River Delta, southeastern Brazil, through a multi-proxy approach that links palynology, diatoms, sedimentology and geochemistry analyses (i.e., Total C, Total N, δ13C and δ15N). These analyses, temporally synchronized with five radiocarbon ages, revealed environmental changes from marine to continental over the last ∼ 7550 years. The studied sedimentary succession recorded the upward transition from estuarine channel (until ~ 7550 cal yr BP) to estuarine central basin (>~ 7550 to ~ 5250 cal yr BP) deposits, the latter containing increased mangrove vegetation, marine and marine/brackish water diatoms. The range of geochemical values (δ13C = − 30− 10, δ15N = 2 − 8 and C/N = 440) also indicate marine/estuarine organic matter and C3 terrestrial plants to that time interval. A following period recorded two phases: lake/ria (~ 5250 to ~ 400 cal yr BP) and fluvial channel (~ 400 cal yr BP until modern age). During this stage, mangroves were replaced by trees/shrubs and herbs/grasses due to the disconnection with the marine realm. As a result, the corresponding sediments contain only organic matter sourced from freshwater and C3 terrestrial plants (δ13C = − 29− 26, δ15N = 0 − 8 and C/N = 1045). The equilibrium between fluvial sediment supply and relative sea-level changes during the Holocene controlled the morphologic and vegetation changes in the studied littoral. The estuary became established during the early Holocene as a resulted of a eustatic sea-level rise, when the fluvial sediment supply to the coast was relatively lower due to a dry period. However, during the late Holocene, the climatic force was more significant to the development of coastal morphology due to a wet period that caused an increase in sandy sediment supply to coastal system. Then, the increase of fluvial discharge associated to a relative sea-level fall caused a marine regression and shrinkage of mangroves during the late Holocene. The evaluation of mangrove dynamics according to climatic and sea-level changes mainly during the late Holocene is essential for the understanding of their survival ability under future scenarios, with a probable accelerated sea-level rise and intensification of extreme climatic events in southeastern Brazil for the next century.

ResumoAB: Late Quaternary deposits in Northeastern Brazil have been scarcely investigated, despite their great relevance to discuss the post-rift evolution of South American passive margin within the context of landform, sea level and tectonic deformation. Sedimentological, stratigraphic and morphological characterization of these deposits led to their distinction from the underlying Early/Middle Miocene Barreiras Formation. Two sedimentary units (PB1 and PB2) were recognized and related, with basis on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, to the time intervals between 74.8±9.3 and 30.8±6.9 ka, and 8.8±0.9 and 1.8±0.2 ka, respectively. Unit PB1 is exposed discontinuously in the highest topography (usually between 100 m and 150 m), being mostly composed of endured sandstones and breccias either with massive bedding or an abundance of complex styles of ductile and brittle soft sediment deformation structures related to contemporaneous seismic activity. This unit also includes a large volume of non-indured sharply bounded, fining upward massive or stratified conglomerates and sandstones interbedded with mudstones, attributed to fluvial, alluvial and aeolian dune environments. These deposits might include nearshore marine-influenced strata in areas located nearby the modern coastline, as suggested by presence of burrows as Skolithos, Thalassinoides, Planolites, Diplocraterion, and Teichichnus. Unit PB2, composed of sands with massive or dissipation dune structures, occurs continuously, mostly on northeastward dipping tablelands located at altitudes lower than 100 m. The present work focusing on units PB1 and PB2, together referred as Post-Barreiras Sediments, opens a new opportunity to discuss landform, sea level and tectonic history of eastern South American passive margin during the latest Quaternary. Hence, following the Miocene transgression, there was a prolonged period of non-deposition and sub-aerial exposure, which is related to combination of a worldwide low sea level in the Tortonian and tectonic quiescence. Sediment deposition was reactivated during the latest Pleistocene due to tectonic deformation, which created space to accommodate unit PB1 in downthrown faulted blocks and, perhaps, also synclines produced by extension and compression associated with strike-slip tectonic deformation. Although deposition of this unit was simultaneous to the eustatic fall that followed the Penultimate Transgression, punctuated rises superimposed on the overall fall, added to subsidence, would have favored marine deposition in areas located nearby the modern coastline. A renewed phase of deformation would have resulted in newly subsiding areas in the Holocene, promoting deposition of unit PB2 over unit PB1. Although unit PB2 formed during most of the last transgression, except along coastal areas, it has no records of marine sedimentation, suggesting a non-significant rise or reworking of thin transgressive sands by aeolian process. The data presented herein leads to review the evolution of South American passive margin based on assumptions of uniform sedimentation and undeformed planation surfaces over a wide coastal area of Northeastern Brazil.

ResumoA preliminary analysis of a segment of the Paraiba littoral in northeastern Brazil revealed a prograding shoreline in a coast currently characterized by estuarine transgressive depositional systems. Detailed study of coastal geomorphology is of relevance to reconstruct the sea-level history in this shoreline. Such investigation can help improve the record of past sea-level curves of northeastern Brazil, an issue still open to debates. In this work, we explored remote sensing imagery for the geomorphological characterization of this prograding shoreline and combined this information with geological field data aiming to establish the various phases of shoreline progradation. In addition, we also analyzed the potential forcing factors responsible for the morphological changes in the eastern section of the littoral of Paraiba during the late Holocene, comparing changes with other prograding shorelines along the east coast of Brazil. Geomorphological interpretation was based on the analysis of Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) images acquired aboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite 1 (ALOS-1). Geological data comprised dating of sand samples by the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) technique for the establishment of the chronological context. The coastal deposits are represented by a cuspate morphology and numerous internal beach ridges that prograded seaward from a roughly north-south trending palaeocliff. The chronological data indicate shoreline progradation during the past 2.1 +/- 0.1 ka, after the mid-Holocene sea-level fall. Several prograding episodes occurred during this time, some not matching with proposed sea-level rises punctuated upon the overall fall. Together with the regional geological context of the study area, we propose that eustatic sea-level was not the only factor triggering coastal progradation in this region.

ResumoIn order to contribute to the discussion of Holocene climate changes, four sediment cores were collected from the northern Brazilian Amazonia lowland. These cores were studied through pollen analysis and sedimentary features, and the results were discussed within a chronological framework provided by radiocarbon dating. The cores were sampled from fluvial terraces representative of channel, floodplain/lake and crevasse splay deposits formed since the mid-Holocene. The pollen samples derive from floodplain/lake deposits and the pollen grains are mainly composed by families Moraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Fabaceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae, Combretaceae, Sapindaceae, Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Aizoaceae, Apiaceae and genus Sebastiana. The pollen data suggest no significant vegetation changes in the study area for the past 48084886 cal yr BP. This led to proposing stable climatic conditions since at least the middle Holocene. Such a finding is contrary to the occurrence of a dry period during the middle Holocene. The stabilization of the relative sea level about 6000 cal yr BP along the northern Brazilian littoral may have influenced the water table, and favored the establishment and maintenance of Amazonian lowland forest during the mid- and late Holocene. In addition, this process may have attenuated the impact of that dry period in areas under most fluvial influence.

ResumoResearch question: Coastal zones face significant environmental and socio-economic impacts that is already experiencing extreme events. Increased frequency of intense storms events and along with the rise in sea level, lo leads to more coastal flooding. It is extremely important to improve and create tools that allow stakeholders to access reliable science-based information to help them respond to the risks of climate change and sea level raise impacts and assess opportunities for adaptation in coastal areas. Methodology: The location for Brazil is the city of Santos, which is the main port of Brazil. The METROPOLE project is funded by BELMONT Forum. The hypothesis of the project is that risk knowledge is best understood as being co-produced by science and by the social, political and cultural context, engaging stakeholders and policymakers in participatory planning meetings to analyse the social and cultural factors that impact decision-making and regional adaptive capacity. The COastal Adaptation to Sea level rise Tool (COAST) is software that models flooding damage to assets from storm surge and sea level rise over time. It can calculate one-time damages from a single event in time; as well as cumulative damage from all possible storms over a given time period. It then is used to calculate the benefits and costs from various adaptation strategies to determine which strategy is the most fiscal economically efficient over time. A one hundred year storm surge is the height of water with a probability of 0.01. Findings: For Southeast Zone, the damages from storm surge increase greatly from an SLR of 18 cm to 45 cm, and even more for the 1.00 m. with SLR between 18 and 30 cm damages by 2050 are concentrated along the Ponta da Praia neighbourhood. By 2100, Between 30 cm and 1 m the damaged area extends along the coast extending the flooding and storm surges few blocks away from the coast. By 2100, for 1 m SLR, if action is not taken, several areas in Ponta da Praia would be lost due to permanent inundation by SLR. For the Northeast Zone, large areas with high tides due to SLR in the section along the main canal with SLR of 18 to 30 cm, covering a large region and a SLR of 1 m the area flooded can extend until the over most of the region. The estimated damages concentrate mainly along the canal and along the coastal line, with the damages more concentrated (building lost due to flood) mainly in the Sao Manoel region. The cumulative damages shows higher losses for the Southeast zone of Santos, with cumulative losses of $R 1.7 billion with a SLR of 1 m between 2010 and 2100, while the Northwest zone shows losses of $R 550 million. Significance for practical solutions: We show the results of the applications of COAST in Santos, assuming various sea level rise levels until 2100. The partnership with the municipal governments will facilitate the internalization of the results and the implementation of public policies and appropriate environmental legislation and allowing the municipals to better manage their coastal areas.

ResumoA large area in northeastern Marajó Island, northern Brazil, has been characterized geomorphologically, applying information acquired from Landsat imagery. This study was combined with detailed sedimentologic analysis of continuous cores, which provided a record of depositional settings developed in this area through the Holocene. The results revealed well-preserved, meandering to anastomosed drainage networks of wide palaeochannels that were superimposed by a narrower palaeochannel system. In both cases, the sedimentary record consists of sands, heterolithic deposits and muds, locally rich in plant debris. The strata are organized into fining upward successions that reach approximately 18 m thick in the wide channels and 4 m thick in the narrow channels. Sedimentary features suggestive of a coastal location for the wider palaeochannels and reworking of sediments by tidal currents include the prevalence of well to moderately sorted, rounded to subrounded, fine- to medium-grained sands displaying foreset packages separated by mud couplets, suggestive of tidal cycles. The data presented herein point to a rise in relative sea level reaching the Lake Arari area during the early to late/mid Holocene. This event was followed by a relative sea level drop. Tectonics seem to have contributed to an overall lowering in relative sea level in the study area since the mid-Holocene, which does not follow the same pattern recorded in other areas along the northern Brazilian coast.
