ResumoCloud movement and evolution signify the complex water and energy transport in the atmosphere-ocean-land system. Detecting, clustering, and tracking clouds as semicoherent clusters enable study of their evolution which can complement climate model simulations and enhance satellite retrieval algorithms, where there are gaps between overpasses. Using a cluster tracking algorithm, in this study we examine the trajectories, size, and brightness temperature of millions of cloud clusters over their lifespan, from infrared satellite observations at 30 min, 4 km resolution, for a period of 11 years. We found that the majority of cold clouds were both small and short lived and that their frequency and location are influenced by El Niño. Also, this large sample of individually tracked clouds shows their horizontal size and temperature evolution. Long-lived clusters tended to achieve their temperature and size maturity milestones at different times, while these stages often occurred simultaneously in short-lived clusters. On average, clusters with this lag also exhibited a greater rainfall contribution than those where minimum temperature and maximum size stages occurred simultaneously. Furthermore, by examining the diurnal cycle of cluster development over Africa and the Indian subcontinent, we observed differences in the local timing of the maximum occurrence at different life cycle stages. Over land there was a strong diurnal peak in the afternoon, while over the ocean there was a semidiurnal peak composed of longer-lived clusters in the early morning hours and shorter-lived clusters in the afternoon. Building on regional specific work, this study provides a global long-term survey of object-based cloud characteristics.

ResumoTropical convective systems are important because they account for most of the total rainfall. Moreover they are responsible for the main vertical exchanges of energy in the tropical troposphere. An automatic method using GOES high resolution infrared images, has been used for tracking cloud clusters during their life cycle. The method allows for the tracking of every mesoscale convective clóud cluster, defined as adjacent pixels colder than a brightness temperature threshold. The tracking algorithm !S based on the cluster overlap between two successive images. The methodotogy allows for an objective determination of parameters such as: size, mean temperature, temperature variance, duration, coordinates of the center of gravity, speed, trajectory, eccentricity and many others radiative and morphology properties of cloud clusters, Two tracking methodology making use of the same image dataset ale compared. The main difference between these tWo methods is the criterion used to identify clusters between two succeslve Images. Using full space and time resolution satellite data, the study is these limited to the Amazonian region (20S-7N; 60W-30W) during the wet season Atmospheric Mesoscale campaign (WET AMC) of the Large scale Biosphere Atmosphere experiment in Amazonia (LBA), in January-February 1999.

ResumoThe purpose of this study is to develop and validate an algorithm for tracking and forecasting radiative and morphological characteristics of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) through their entire life cycles using geostationary satellite thermal channel information (10.8 mu m). The main features of this system are the following: 1) a cloud cluster detection method based on a threshold temperature (235 K), 2) a tracking technique based on MCS overlapping areas in successive images, and 3) a forecast module based on the evolution of each particular MCS in previous steps. This feature is based on the MCS's possible displacement (considering the center of the mass position of the cloud cluster in previous time steps) and its size evolution. Statistical information about MCS evolution during the Wet Season Atmospheric Mesoscale Campaign (WETAMC) of the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) was used to obtain area expansion mean rates for different MCSs according to their lifetime durations. This nowcasting tool was applied to evaluate the MCS displacement and size evolution over the Del Plata basin in South America up to 120 min with 30-min intervals. The Forecast and Tracking the Evolution of Cloud Clusters (ForTraCC) technique's performance was evaluated based on the difference between the forecasted and observed images. This evaluation shows good agreement between the observed and forecast size and minimum temperature for shorter forecast lead times, but tends to underestimate MCS size (and overestimate the minimum temperature) for larger forecast lead times.

ResumoThe relationship between convective system area expansion, at the initiation stage, and the life cycle duration allows this parameter to be used as a tool for nowcasting. The area expansion reaches its maximum value during the initiation stage of the convec- tive systems and later, the upper level wind divergence reaches its maximum, at or just before to the mature stage. The maximum area expansion occurs close to the time of maximum precipitation and about 4 hours before the maximum cold cloud fraction at the same threshold. Also, the area expansion can be used to determine the convective system life stage and to supply information about the condensation processes and the upper level wind divergence. The average area expansion at the initiation stage varies exponentially with the life cycle duration. This work introduces the operational prod- uct FORTRACC (FORecasting and TRAcking of the evolution of Cloud Clusters) used to describe the convective systems life cycle and its nowcasting. The results using GOES IR image and radar CAPPI 3 km are presented to describe the performance of this technique. Finally, it presents the preliminary results of different techniques used by CPTEC for nowcasting, as for example: the combination of IR and WV channel to predict lightning activity, the application of ascend/descend cloud top rate, using weather radar, to forecast the convection intensity and duration of convective cells and the combination of FORTRACC with the information of lightning activity, allowing to describe the evolution of electrical activity during the convective system life cycle.
