ResumoGravitational waves are perturbations in the space-time that propagate at the speed of light. The study of such phenomenon is interesting because many cosmological processes and astrophysical objects, such as binary systems, are potential sources of gravitational radiation and can have their emissions detected in the near future by the next generation of interferometric detectors. Concerning the astrophysical objects, an interesting case is when there are several sources emitting in such a way that there is a superposition of signals, resulting in a smooth spectrum which spans a wide range of frequencies, the so-called stochastic background. In this paper, we are concerned with the stochastic backgrounds generated by compact binaries (i.e., binary systems formed by neutron stars and black holes) in the coalescing phase. In particular, we obtain such backgrounds by employing a new method developed in our previous studies.

ResumoIn the study of gravitational waves (GWs), the stochastic background generated by compact binary systems are among the most important kinds of signals. The reason for such an importance has to do with their probable detection by the interferometric detectors [such as the Advanced LIGO (ALIGO) and Einstein Telescope (ET)] in the near future. In this paper we are concerned with, in particular, the stochastic background of GWs generated by double neutron star (DNS) systems in circular orbits during their periodic and quasi-periodic phases. Our aim here is to describe a new method to calculate such spectra, which is based on an analogy with a problem of Statistical Mechanics. Besides, an important characteristic of our method is to consider the time evolution of the orbital parameters.

ResumoThe LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the event GW170817, the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star component will add to the contribution from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. In the Advanced LIGO-Virgo frequency band most sensitive to stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), we predict a total astrophysical background with amplitude ΩGWðf¼25Hz¼1.8þ2.7 −1.3 ×10−9 with 90% confidence, compared with ΩGWðf¼25Hz¼1.1þ1.2 −0.7 ×10−9 from binary black holes alone. Assuming the most probable rate for compact binary mergers, we find that the total background may be detectable with a signal-to-noise-ratio of 3 after 40 months of total observation time, based on the expected timeline for Advanced LIGO and Virgo to reach their design sensitivity.

ResumoBinary Systems are the the most studied sources of gravitational radiation, both theoretically and observationally. Theoretically, the mechanisms of emission and the behaviuor of the orbital parameters are well known and can be written in analytic form in several cases, which is a great advantage in terms of computational work; observationally, even though gravitational waves have not been detected yet, the strongest indication of the its existence have arisen from the observation of binary systems, more specifically the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar. When one begins to detect gravitational radiation, one of the observed pattern of the signals will probably be of stochastic background nature because there will be a superposition of the signals emited by a plenty of sources around the Universe. So, our task here is to develop a method for summing the gravitational waves emited by cosmological binary compact systems in order to find out the shape of the spectra, that is, we will develop a method for obtaining the stochastic background generated by these systems. We use here an analogy with a problem of statistical mechanics in order to perform this sum, besides taking into account the temporal variation of the orbital parameters of the systems..

ResumoBinary systems are the most studied sources of gravitational waves. The mechanisms of emission and the behavior of the orbital parameters are well known and can be written in analytic form in several cases. Besides, the strongest indication of the existence of gravitational waves has arisen from the observation of binary systems. On the other hand, when the detection of gravitational radiation becomes a reality, one of the observed pattern of the signals will be probably of stochastic background nature, which are characterized by a superposition of signals emitted by many sources around the universe. Our aim here is to develop an alternative method of calculating such backgrounds emitted by cosmological compact binary systems during their periodic or quasiperiodic phases. We use an analogy with a problem of statistical mechanics in order to perform this sum as well as taking into account the temporal variation of the orbital parameters of the systems. Such a kind of background is of particular importance since it could well form an important foreground for the planned gravitational wave interferometers DECI-Hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO), Big Bang Observer (BBO), Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) or Evolved LISA (eLISA), Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (ALIGO), and Einstein Telescope (ET).

ResumoThe LIGO detection of the gravitational wave transient GW150914, from the inspiral and merger of two black holes with masses >= 30M(circle dot), suggests a population of binary black holes with relatively high mass. This observation implies that the stochastic gravitational-wave background from binary black holes, created from the incoherent superposition of all the merging binaries in the Universe, could be higher than previously expected. Using the properties of GW150914, we estimate the energy density of such a background from binary black holes. In the most sensitive part of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo band for stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), we predict Omega(GW)(f = 25 Hz) = 1.1(-0.9) (+2.7) x 10(-9) with 90% confidence. This prediction is robustly demonstrated for a variety of formation scenarios with different parameters. The differences between models are small compared to the statistical uncertainty arising from the currently poorly constrained local coalescence rate. We conclude that this background is potentially measurable by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors operating at their projected final sensitivity.

ResumoThe interest in gravitational waves (GW) has increased since the recent detections of such signals announced by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration. On the other hand, also interesting is the study of the stochastic backgrounds of GW (SBGW), which could in principle be generated by a variety of sources and astrophysical processes; particularly, in the present paper we are concerned with the SBGW from MACHO binaries in the Galaxy. In our scheme, we take into account only MACHOs which are black holes (BHMACHOs) and are located up to 50 kpc from the center of the Galaxy. Our spectra, which are calculated in the scenarios with Ω h2= 0.1 and Ω h2= 1.0 , are parameterized by the fraction of the Galaxys dark halo mass which is in the form of BHMACHOs and are compared with some results found in the literature. Besides, we investigate in what situations the backgrounds are above the sensitivity curves of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), Einstein Telescope (ET), Advanced Virgo (AdV) and Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory Plus (LIGO A+).
