ResumoThe eccentric KozaiLidov mechanism, based on the secular theory, has been proposed as a mechanism that plays an important role in producing orbits that switch from prograde to retrograde. In the present work we study the secular dynamics of a triple system composed of a Sun-like central star and a Jupiter-like planet, which are under the gravitational influence of another perturbing star (brown dwarf). The perturbation potential is developed in closed form up to the fifth order in a small parameter (α=a1/a2), where a1 is the semimajor axis of the extrasolar planet and a2 is the semimajor axis of the perturbing star. To eliminate the short-period terms of the perturbation potential, the double-average method is applied. In this work we do not eliminate the nodes, a standard method in the literature, before deriving the equations of motion. The main goal is to study the effects of the higher-order terms of the expansion of the perturbing force due to the third body in the orbital evolution of the planet. In particular, we investigate the inclination and the shape (eccentricity) of these orbits. We show the importance of the higher-order terms in changing the inversion times of the flip, i.e., the times where the inclination of the inner planet flips from prograde to retrograde trajectories. We also show the dependence of the first flip with respect to the semimajor axis and eccentricity of the orbit of the planet. The general conclusion is that the analytical model increases its accuracy with the inclusion of higher-order terms. We also performed full numerical integrations using the BulirschStoer method available in the Mercury package for comparison with the analytical model. The results obtained with the equations developed in this work are in accordance with direct numerical simulations.

ResumoIn a companion paper of this was introduced a set of non-linear algebraic equations for ball's motion, sliding friction and internal loading distribution computation in a high-speed, single-row, angular-contact ball bearing, subjected to a known combined radial, thrust and moment load, which must be applied to the inner ring's center of mass. It was shown there that it is required the iterative solution of 9Z + 3 simultaneous non-linear equations - where Z is the number of balls - to yield exact solution for contact angles, ball attitude angles, rolling radii, normal contact deformations and axial, radial, and angular deflections of the inner ring with respect the outer ring. The Newton-Rhapson method is to be used to solve the problem. This paper deals with the numerical procedure description. The numerical results derived from the described procedure shall be published later.

ResumoThis paper analyzes the influence of the orbital disturbance forces in the trajectory of lunar satellites. The following gravitational and non-gravitational orbital disturbances are considered: the non-homogeneity of the lunar gravitational field; the gravitational attraction due to the third body, considering the Earth and the Sun; the lunar albedo; the solar radiation pressure. Numerical models were developed and implemented in an orbital trajectory simulator aiming to understand the dynamics of the orbital motion of an artificial satellite in lunar orbit when considering the simultaneous effect of all disturbances. Different orbits were simulated in order to characterize the major and the minor influence of each disturbing force as function of the inclination and the right ascension of the ascending node. This study can be very useful in the space mission analysis and in the selection of orbits less affected by environmental disturbances.

Resumohis paper aims to simulate part of the orbital trajectory of Lunar Prospector mission to analyze the relevance of using a Kalman filter to estimate the trajectory. For this study it is considered the disturbance due to the lunar gravitational potential using one of the most recent models, the LP100K model, which is based on spherical harmonics, and considers the maximum degree and order up to the value 100. In order to simplify the expression of the gravitational potential and, consequently, to reduce the computational effort required in the simulation, in some cases, lower values for degree and order are used. Following this aim, it is made an analysis of the inserted error in the simulations when using such values of degree and order to propagate the spacecraft trajectory and control. This analysis was done using the standard deviation that characterizes the uncertainty for each one of the values of the degree and order used in LP100K model for the satellite orbit. With knowledge of the uncertainty of the gravity model adopted, lunar orbital trajectory simulations may be accomplished considering these values of uncertainty. Furthermore, it was also used a Kalman filter, where is considered the sensor's uncertainty that defines the satellite position at each step of the simulation and the uncertainty of the model, by means of the characteristic variance of the truncated gravity model. Thus, this procedure represents an effort to approximate the results obtained using lower values for the degree and order of the spherical harmonics, to the results that would be attained if the maximum accuracy of the model LP100K were adopted. Also a comparison is made between the error in the satellite position in the situation in which the Kalman filter is used and the situation in which the filter is not used. The data for the comparison were obtained from the standard deviation in the velocity increment of the space vehicle.

ResumoThe objective of this work is to analyze orbital maneuvers of a spacecraft orbiting Mars, considering disturbance effects due to the gravitational attraction of the Sun, Phobos and Deimos, beyond the disturbances due to the gravitational potential of Mars. To simulate the trajectory, constructive aspects of the propulsion system were considered. Initially ideal thrusters, capable of applying infinite magnitude of the thrust, were used. Thus, impulsive optimal maneuvers were obtained by scanning the solutions of the Lamberts problem in order to select the maneuver of minimum fuel consumption. Due to the impossibility of applying an impulse, the orbital maneuver must be distributed in a propulsive arc around the position of the impulse given by the solution of the Lamberts problem. However the effect of the propulsive arc is not exactly equivalent to the application of an impulse due to the errors in magnitude and direction of applied thrust. Therefore, the influence of the thrusters capacity in the trajectory was evaluated for a more realistic model instead of the ideal case represented by the impulsive approach. Beyond the evaluation of the deviation in the orbital path, was considered an automatic correction of the semi-major axis using continuous low thrust controlled in closed loop to minimize the error in the trajectory after the application of the main thrust.

ResumoThe trajectory of a spacecraft going to the periapsis of its orbit around the smaller body of a binary system is estimated from the observed data using a Kalman Filter. Simulations of the trajectories will be made to generate the data of the spacecraft position. When observed from the Earth, using a fixed star as a reference, we have the spacecraft position as an angle function ϕ. This is the angle between spacecraft position vector and the star position vector. The result shows that Kalman Filter can be used successfully for trajectory estimation, if adequate accuracy is available for the angle observations.

ResumoSpace missions intending to visit Europa, one of the famous Galileans moons of Jupiter, are among the most important topics in space activities today. There is an increasing interest in the scientific community to send spacecrafts to be inserted into Europas orbit, with goals like mapping its surface and gravitational field. From the quality of the observations until the orbital maneuvers, the required aspects for the success of the mission will depend on the orbits used by the spacecraft. The present work searches for less perturbed elliptical orbits around Europa, because they are very important, since these orbits are expected to be more stable to place the spacecraft. The development of the study is based on the net effects of the perturbing forces over the time, evaluated by the integral of those forces with respect to the time. The value of this integral depends both on the dynamical model and the orbit of the spacecraft. Jupiters third-body perturbation and the J2 and J3 terms of the gravitational potential of Europa are the perturbing forces considered. The results presented here are obtained by performing numerical integrations of the perturbing forces, and they show the locations of the less perturbed orbits.

axially grooved heat pipe
ResumoThe usual experimental method to detect heat pipe capillary limit under different inclinations includes submitting the pipe to a certain tilt and increasing the heat load at the evaporator zone until a sudden rise in temperature at this region (dry out) is observed. According to this method, for each heat load dwell imposed to the pipe, either the dry out phenomenon is detected or steady state temperature is achieved. The complete test is time consuming and the precision of the heat load detection needed to induce the dry out depends on the power step utilized. In addition, sometimes the dry out is difficult to detect accurately in axially grooved heat pipes due to the fact of the liquid phase is distributed in a non-homogeneous way at the evaporator zone. In fact, the grooves at the top of the heat pipe tend to dry faster. At the lower grooves of the evaporator forms a buildup of working fluid (puddle) due to gravitational effects and thus needing a higher heat flux to cause the drying. The dynamic method proposed in this paper to detect dry out in heat pipes consists in applying a given heat load on the heat pipe, which is initially kept in a horizontal position on a rotary table equipped with motor with reducer gearbox and digital inclinometer. After steady state is reached on the heat pipe, which is leveled horizontally, the table is driven causing the pipe to adverse tilt slowly until the dry out occurs. Once dry out initiates, the axial gravity force component, which is permanently increasing due to table rotation, provokes the liquid phase accelerated retreating from the evaporator, including the puddle liquid excess. It assists the fast overheating onset in the dried zone that in its turn allows a very clear detection of the dry out event by a temperature sensor. The pipe is then placed back in the horizontal position. The proposed test method besides requiring less time to obtain the capillary limit curve, permits to detect in a more precision way the exact time when the dry out occurs. The capillary limits obtained from this method were compared against those obtained from conventional methods for ammonia two-core axially-grooved heat pipe. The results show that dynamic test method can be adopted as an effective alternative to determine capillary limit for axially grooved heat pipes.

Software requirements quality
ResumoPoorly written requirements are a common source of software defects and, in application areas like space systems, the cost of malfunctioning software can be very high. This work proposes a benchmarking procedure for assessing the quality of software requirements that adopt the Packet Utilization Standard (PUS) defined by the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) standards. The benchmark uses three checklists that aim at guaranteeing that the specifications comply with the PUS standard, consider faulty behaviour, and do not include errors typically found in this type of documents. The benchmark is defined for two services of the PUS standard: the telecommand verification and on board operating scheduling. A benchmark validation approach is also proposed in the paper. It uses the concept of fault injection to insert known errors in software requirements specification documents. The benchmark validation is performed through its application to three projects from different countries. Results show that our proposal provides a simple and effective way for identifying weaknesses and compare the degree of maturity of requirements documents.
