ResumoThe interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) plays an important role in the cosmic ray flux modulation that reaches the lower ionosphere, which is one of the main sources of the ionization in these regions. In this work, it is presented data analysis results obtained from riometers operating at 30 MHz over Cachoeira Paulista (located at South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA) - connected to an antenna pointed to the zenith direction, 22.50oS; 45.00oW) and the Brazilian Antarctic Station - EACF (connected to an antenna pointed to the zenith and geomagnetic west directions, 62.56oS; 58.39oW) during almost one complete solar cycle (1989-1996). Previous results have shown that there is a strong correlation between the cosmic noise absorption (CNA) behavior and the IMF. Basically, the sub-auroral region presents a decrease in the CNA with the increase of the IMF intensity, while in the SAMA region, for the same IMF conditions, it was registered an increase. Related to the IMF direction, the greater values of CNA are present when the IMF is pointed to the south and to the east for EACF and AMAS regions, respectively. The results of these data analysis are discussed and the galactic cosmic noise absorption is computed by using the geomagnetic activity (geomagnetic field values) to show the relationship between CNA and IMF behavior.

ResumoGravity waves propagating to thermospheric heights and interacting with the ionospheric plasma give rise to Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs). These are visible as amplitude, phase and frequency quasi-periodical fluctuations of a radio signal reflected from the ionosphere and a variation of cosmic noise absorption intensity in the lower ionosphere, which can be registered by a riometer . The knowledge of the intensity of the wave disturbances of the neutral atmosphere and of ionospheric parameters and their forecast are important to many applications, like forecasting conditions of radio communication, aero- and spacecraft navigation and/or the development of forecasting numerical models of the general circulation and composition of the middle atmosphere and ionosphere. In this work, the previous analysis of occurrence of TIDs detected by riometers operating at 30 MHz over Cachoeira Paulista (connected to an antenna pointed to the zenith direction, 22.50 oS; 45.00oW) and the Brazilian Antarctic Station - EACF (connected to an antenna pointed to the zenith and geomagnetic west directions, 62.56oS; 58.39oW) during almost one complete solar cycle (1989-1996) is presented. Its causes as well as possible sources will be also discussed.

ResumoAt this point, 74 nights have been observed during the period of May 2002 to March 2003, high to low solar activity period, by Fabry-Perot Interferometer operating at Cachoeira Paulista - CP (22.5S; 45W). This study focuses the monthly and seasonal analysis of the horizontal and meridional components of the thermospheric winds at CP. For the studied region, the zonal component of the thermospheric winds is predominantly eastward during the nocturnal hours and the meridional component is southward in the initial nocturnal hours and northward in the end of the night. Undesturbed F-region e-filds at low latitudes are primarily generated by the thermospheric winds. Ionosphere plasma drifts and thermospheric winds are important transport mechanisms that affect the electron density distribution. The results observed are compared with HWM93 model.

ResumoUpper mesosphere airglow emissions (OI5577, O2 and OH) and OH rotational temperatures have been observed at Cariri airglow observatory (7S, 35W) since 1998. Ionospheric sounding has also been carried out at Sao Luis (2S, 44W), with a distance of approximately 1000 km from the west of Cariri. Both are located in the equatorial region of South America. Spectral analyses of the airglow emission rates and ionospheric F-region height (hF) reveal that there are 2.0 and 3.5 day period variability in their temporal and day to day variations. This might indicate that planetary scale oscillations, the Rossby and Ultra Fast Kelvin waves, are propagating from the troposphere up to the thermosphere in the equatorial region.

ResumoWith the progress of the trans-ionospheric communications technologies, it is important to understand the medium where the signals propagate through and the external agents that affect this medium. In order to study the ionosphere in the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly area, the Southern Regional Space Research Center (CRSPE/INPEMCT), installed at the Southern Space Observatory a GPS Receiving System (“Global Positioning System”) to monitor the scintillations in the signals received from the GPS satellites due to Ionospheric Irregularities. Solar activity observations from October 26 to 29, 2003 detected a very strong magnetic storm that caused subsequent effects in the Terrestrial Geophysics. Measurements of the magnetometers world net manifested large Earth magnetic field variations, characterizing a severe geomagnetic storm. The monitoring of the local ionosphere revealed intense GPS scintillations measurements over the São Martinho da Serra Southern Space Observatory (29,28° S, 53,82°W, dip latitude 18,57° S). Besides this, other two INPE’s GPS receivers located in Cuiabá (15,45°S, 56,46°W, dip latitude 6,1°S) and in São Luís (2,57°S, 44,00° W, dip latitude 1,3° S) detected similar perturbations in the same period. This work presents the GPS signals behavior during the magnetic storm of October 26-29, 2003, in these three sites over the Brazilian territory. The GPS scintillations are compared with the magnetic indices.

ResumoSeveral rockets carrying plasma diagnostic experiments were launched from the Brazilian rocket launching stations in Natal (5.9oS, 35.2oW Geog. Lat.) and Alcantara (2.31oS, 44.4oW Geog. Lat.). Langmuir Probes (LP) were used to measure the height profiles of electron density (ne) and electron temperature (Te) and High Frequency Capacitance (HFC) probes were used to measure ne. The main objectives of the studies reported here are: (1) to compare the observed ne profiles with the Model predictions, (2) to have a critical view on the reliability of the observed ne profiles by comparing the expected and observed characteristics of the plasma irregularities, and (3) to look into the possible reasons for the deviations of the observed ne pro- files from the model predictions. A comparative study of the theoretically expected and experimentally observed characteristics of the plasma irregularities can give us information on the reliability of the observed profiles. An attempt is made to obtain information as to what are the physical parameters responsible for the observed deviations in the profiles and thereby to suggest some possible improvements in the methods used for model predictions for low latitudes. The electron density profiles estimated from the Langmuir and the HFC probe measurements, qualitatively, match with the IRI-95 model profiles especially during day time or during night time when the F-region base is rather at a low level. However, quantitatively, the model profiles deviate considerably from the observations. These deviations can be attributed to one or more of the following (a) Inadequacy of the IRI-95 model to represent the equatorial ionosphere over Brazilian region which is not adequately represented in the data base used in the IRI model formulation; (b) The non-inclusion of the effects of electrodynamic forces in the IRI model. These processes are extremely important in the low latitude ionosphere. (c) Non inclusion of the effect of electron temperature variation on the saturation electron current and thereby on the proportionality constant that relates the sensor current collected with the electron number density. This can result in an overestimation of the electron density in regions of lower electron temperature; (d) Non inclusion of the negative plasma sheath effect in the sensor current electron density relationship.

ResumoThis work focus the responses of the equatorial ionosphere over South America to intense substorms and, on the other hand, in the absence of magnetic storms. The substorms here concerned are related to what is known as High Intensity Long Duration Continuous Auroral Activity HILDCAA’s. The analysis of these responses are carried out by means of ground-based ionosonde data from Fortaleza (3 53’S 38 25’W dip 2.7S for the epoch 1978-1979) and Cachoeira Paulista (22 41’S , 45 00W, dip 25.6S for 1978-1979)and ISEE-3 (Interplanetary Sun-Earth Explorer) satellite data during the 1978-1979 time frame. The substorm disturbed days are compared with the averages of quiet days. The ionospheric height variations are analyzed in the light of satellite data and intercomparisons of the two stations.

ResumoDuring the occurrence of a geomagnetic storm a series of disturbances can affect the ionosphere at all latitudes and longitudes. Over the low latitudes, the ionospheric F layer height can be affected mainly by magnetospheric electric fields that penetrate to the low latitudes and by disturbance dynamo electric fields. Disturbed meridional winds have minor effect over low latitudes and disturbed zonal winds are important only near sunset. The ionospheric heights are directly affected by the disturbed electric fields through the effect of the ExB drift. The density distribution and the equatorial ionization anomaly are also affected in the process due to occurrence of a disturbed vertical drift. Changes in the atmospheric composition due to disturbance winds are also responsible for part of the electron density changes during magnetic storms. The solar events that occurred in the end of October 2003 gave rise to very strong geomagnetic disturbances that peaked twice with Dst values reaching less that -300 nT between 00:00 UT on the 29th and 04:00 UT on the 30th, and between 22:00 UT on the 30th and 01:00 UT on the 31st. Several disturbances were observed in the ionospheric stations over the Brazilian region, but the most severe of them occurred on the evening (around 21 UT) of October 30th. A very strong vertical drift shifted the ionosphere over the equatorial station São Luís to heights above 800 km. The effect was observed also at the low- and sub-tropical stations Fortaleza and Cachoeira Paulista, but it was less intense over those latitudes, due to the higher efficiency of the ExB drift at the magnetic equator. The ionospheric effects of these very strong geomagnetic storms over the Brazilian region are investigated in this work, and the results are compared to previous results of other very intense storms.

ResumoWe report the radar observation of 5-meter ionospheric irregularities from São Luis equatorial station (2.33 S, 44 W, dip latitude 1.3 o S) on April 11, 2002. The weak irregular structure with positive ascending rate is observed at 18:00 LT and lasted for 20 minutes. The structure is unique in the sense that it is originated at 150 km altitude and extended beyond 350 km over equator. Such observation, in our knowledge, was not reported so far. Bz and AE indices indicate that the strong storm occurs during this period of observation. The time of the occurrence of irregular structure coincides with the time when Bz becomes southward and attains the largest (30 nT) value for next 20 minutes. The AE index also becomes large (750 nT) during this period. The generation mechanism of observed irregular structure in 150-400 km and the role of storm induced electric fields (prompt penetration and dynamo electric fields) to produce such structure remain the subject of further investigation.
