ResumoThe Monitor e Imageador de Raios-X (MIRAX) is a small (~250 kg) X-ray astronomy satellite mission designed to monitor the central Galactic plane for transient phenomena. With a field-of-view of ~1000 square degrees and an angular resolution of ~6 arcmin, MIRAX will provide an unprecedented discovery-space coverage to study X-ray variability in detail, from fast X-ray novae to long-term (~several months) variable phenomena. Chiefly among MIRAX science objectives is its capability of providing simultaneous complete temporal coverage of the evolution of a large number of accreting black holes, including a detailed characterization of the spectral state transitions in these systems. MIRAX's instruments will include a soft X-ray (2-18 keV) and two hard X-ray (10-200 keV) coded-aperture imagers, with sensitivities of ~5 and ~2.6 mCrab/day, respectively. The hard X-ray imagers will be built at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), Brazil, in close collaboration with the Center for Astrophysics & Space Sciences (CASS) of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Institut fur Astronomie und Astrophysik of the University of Tubingen (IAAT) in Germany; UCSD will provide the crossed-strip position-sensitive (0.5- mm spatial resolution) CdZnTe (CZT) hard X-ray detectors. The soft X-ray camera, provided by the Space Research Organization Netherlands (SRON), will be the spare flight unit of the Wide Field Cameras that flew on the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX . MIRAX is an approved mission of the Brazilian Space Agency (Agnecia Espacial Brasileira - AEB) and is scheduled to be launched in 2011 in a low-altitude (~550 km) circular equatorial orbit. In this paper we present recent developments in the mission planning and design, as well as Monte Carlo simulations performed on the GEANT-based package MGGPOD environment (Weidenspointner et al. 2004) and new algorithms for image digital processing. Simulated images of the central Galactic plane as it would be seen by MIRAX are shown.

ResumoThe primary goal of the BRAVO project is to generate investment in information technology, with particular emphasis on datamining and statistical analysis. From a scientific standpoint, the participants assembled to date are engaged in several scientific projects in various fields of cosmology, astrophysics, and data analysis, with significant contributions from international partners. These scientists conduct research on clusters of galaxies, small groups of galaxies, elliptical galaxies, population synthesis, N-body simulations, and a variety of studies in stellar astrophysics. One of the main aspects of this project is the incorporation of these disparate areas of astrophysical research within the context of the coherent development of database technology. Observational cosmology is one of the branches of science experiencing the largest growth in the past few decades. Large photometric and spectroscopic surveys have been carried out in both hemispheres. As a result, an extraordinary amount of data in all portions of the electromagnetic spectrum exists, but without standard techniques for storage and distribution. This project will utilize several specific astronomical databases, created to store data generated by several instruments (including SOAR, Gemini, BDA, etc), uniting them within a common framework and with standard interfaces. We are inviting members of the entire Brazilian astronomical community (detailed in the list of participants) to partake in this effort that aims to standardize analytical techniques, which will enable data access and analysis with common tools. This will certainly impact both education and outreach efforts, as well as the future development of astrophysical research. Finally, this project will provide a constant investment in human resources. First, it will do so by stimulating ongoing short technical visits to Johns Hopkins University and Caltech. These will allow us to bring software technology and expertise in datamining back to Brazil. Second, we will organize the Summer School on Software Technology in Astrophysics, which will be designed to ensure that the Brazilian scientific community can take full advantage of the benefits offered by the VO project.

ResumoThis paper presents an approach for automated test case generation using a software specification modeled in Statecharts. The steps defined in such approach involve: translation of Statecharts modeling into an XML-based language; and the PerformCharts tool generates FSMs based on control flow. These FSMs are the inputs for the Condado tool which generates test cases. The idea is to demonstrate that by using a higher-level technique, such as Statecharts, complex software can be represented with clarity and rich details. A case study was on an implementation of a protocol specified for communication between a scientific experiment and the On-Board Data Handling Computer of a satellite under development at National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

ResumoThe Prototype of the Brazilian Decimetric Array (PBDA) is the unique radio interferometer in Latin America, and it has been successfully developed by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), in Brazil, with collaboration of several national and international institutions. The 5 element array is in operation at INPEs campus located in Cachoeira Paulista (longitude 45deg 00min 20sec W and latitude 22deg 41min 19sec S). Initial solar observations using this interferometer were carried out of about 50 hours during the period of 22nd November to 11th December 2004. The observations were carried out at the frequency of 1.6 GHz, with time and spatial resolutions of 100 milliseconds and 3 minutes of arc, respectively. PBDA consists of 5 element alt-azimuth mounted parabolic dishes of 4-m diameter, having baselines up to 216 meters in East-West direction. The BDA, in its nal conguration, that is scheduled to be concluded in 2007, will be a 38 element radio telescope, to work in the following frequency bands: 1.2-1.7, 2.7 and 5.6 GHz, with final base lines of 2.50 km in East-West direction and 1.25 km in the South direction. This instrument will allow obtaining radio images from the Sun with a spatial resolution of around 4 x 6 arc seconds. Here, we present the observed fringe rates for various baselines obtained for solar observation. They are similar to those accepted once theoretically. One dimensional map of the Sun is also presented and discussed in relation to soft X-ray maps obtained simultaneously from SOHO satellite.

ResumoSolar observations with high temporal and high spectral resolutions and also, over a large range of frequency is the main requirement for the detailed investigation of the time evolution of intense solar ares in radio frequencies and for the study of the fine structures commonly identified in the radio emissions over 100 MHz. In this work, we analyze the temporal evolution and the global behavior of the long lasting solar are observed in 6 June, 2000 (~ 15:00-17:00 UT). This are was associated with the active region NOAA AR 9026 (at the position N23E15). Solar activity in many different wavelengths was reported associated to this are. The Ondrejov Observatory recorded radio emission up to 4.5 GHz. LASCO-C2/SOHO recorded a sequence of solar eruptions, including a full-halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) (with first detection at 15:54 UT). Type II and IV radio bursts had also been reported. Here, we emphasize the identification and the temporal evolution of the decimetric fine structures recorded during this event by the Brazilian Solar Spectroscope (BSS) in the frequency range of (1200-1700 MHz) at INPE, Brazil. In the decimetric band, this event showed two distinct peaks (~ 15:21 UT and ~ 16:42 UT). The first peak is correlated with the are recorded in soft X-rays by GOES. According to the GOES observations this are started at about 14:58 UT, its maximum in soft X-rays was at 15:25 UT, and it ended at 15:40 UT; its importance is X2.3. The BSS radio dynamic spectra recorded with high resolution had showed many fine structures, mainly type "fiber" and "zebra" pattern emissions, including the unique case of harmonic "zebra" emissions in the decimetric band reported, radio pulsations, type III bursts and variants. The characteristics of each kind of fine structures and their occurrence in respect of the global evolution of the are will be presented and the important role of the magnetic filed configuration for the fine structures emission mechanisms will be discussed.

ResumoThe NoSOCs catalogue of galaxy clusters is the largest galaxy cluster catalogue available to the present date. It has been constructed from the digitised version of the Second Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS-II; DPOSS), from the high-latitude fields |b| > 30o. It covers ~ 11000 deg2 and contains ~ 16000 cluster for which richness and redshift estimates are provided. It is expected to contain rich clusters (Ngals ~ 100) out to z ~ 0.3. In this work we present an extensive comparison of optical and X-ray properties of galaxy clusters based on the large data set provided by NoSOCS. The ultimate aim of this study is to obtain reliable mass estimates based on easily observable parameters such as the X-ray luminosity or the number of constituent galaxies (richness). We begin our analysis by determining the recovery rate of X-ray detected clusters in the optical as a function of richness, redshift and X-ray luminosity and we show that the missed clusters are typically low contrast systems when observed optically. We also test for the presence of substructure in the optical two-dimensional data, finding that ~ 35% of the clusters show strong signs of substructure. We find that the slope and scatter of the relations between richness and the X-ray properties, vis, the X-ray luminosity and temperature, are heavily dependent on the density contrast of the clusters. Selecting only substructure-free systems does not improve the correlation between X-ray luminosity and richness, which shows a much larger scatter than that obtained using the X-ray temperature. In the latter case, the sample is significantly reduced because temperature measurements are available only for the most massive (and thus high contrast) systems. The correlation between temperature and richness is very sensitive to the exclusion of clusters showing signs of substructure. While the analysis of correlation of X-ray luminosity and richness were based on the largest sample to date (~ 750 clusters), the one involving temperature used much the same number of objects as previous works (~100), due to lack of sensitive X-ray observations. The results presented here are in good agreement with existing literature.

ResumoOne of the most debated issues of observational and theoretical cosmology is that of how the environment affects the formation and evolution of galaxies. To gain new insight into this subject, we have derived surface photometry for a sample of 3,000 early-type galaxies belonging to 163 clusters with different richness, spanning a redshift range of 0.05 to 0.25. This large data-set is used to analyze how the color distribution inside galaxies depends on several parameters, such as cluster richness, local galaxy density, galaxy luminosity and redshift. We find that the internal color profile of galaxies strongly depends on the environment where galaxies reside. Galaxies in poor and rich clusters are found to follow two distinct trends in the color gradient vs. redshift diagram, with color gradients beeing less steep in rich rather than in poor clusters. No dependence of color gradients on galaxy luminosity is detected both for poor and rich clusters. We find that color gradients strongly depend on local galaxy density, with more shallow gradients in high density regions. Interestingly, this result holds only for low richness clusters, with color gradients of galaxies in rich clusters showing no dependence on local galaxy density. Our results support a reasonable picture whereby young early-type galaxies form in a dissipative collapse process, and then undergo increased (either major or minor) merging activity in richer rather than in poor clusters.
